That's also why I made note that Wertheim mentioned him in the conversation about IW. If they have a good plan to pull it off, Cuomo/de Blasio or Newsome might go for it. You should see some of the guidelines proposals being drawn up for my business to go back to work in safety...very, very detailed. I'm sure the USTA has people making elaborate plans for either option. Maybe even, as @GameSetAndMath suggested, Miami. But they have said they'll decide by sometime in June. It'll still take time to pull it off, if they decide to do it.

In my county in Cali it will allow golf courses to reopen as of today.
I'm sure with some new rules? How are things going in CA? It sounds like the Bay Area is in good shape.

1. No, it was not more than a month ago. He said just a few days ago. In fact, I immediately posted after hearing it.
2. Opening up the courts for morals to play singles is a totally different story than allowing tennis to be played in front of thousands of fans who are going to be sitting next to each other. No comparison.

Agreed that it's not the same as 2 people playing on a public court. However, one option that hasn't been discussed here it the middle-ground. Let's assume they figure out a way to get players safely to the tournament, socially distance them in locker rooms, allow only 2 "guests" (coach, physio, for example,) and that's all good. Just speaking of fans: say they only allow like 20:1 fewer spectators. And many fewer concessions. Seat them far apart, in groups that sign a waiver that they isolate together. Give each one/group a colored wrist band. At the change-overs, now "purple" goes to bathroom/concession, and you orchestrate it to keep them apart. Next changeover, "blue." Same with moving about outer courts. Mark the floors and stands on the outer courts, and overall. Everyone wears a mask. I have to say that here in NYC, we're getting very socialized to the mask and 6' distancing. The option of "no doubles" is already out there, so it decreases the number of matches that have to be played at once. If you eliminate wheelchair tennis, and juniors, (or push it to after the tournament,) you would really be able to break up the spectator load and court load by a lot. Just some thoughts.

GSM..I appreciate your clarifying but it was totally unnecessary. I live here in California. I know what he said and when he made the statement. I obviously know the difference between recreation tennis and a large venue like IW or LA rams football or NBA games. My Lord are you that bored that you don't have anything to do but disect my post which was just an update not something to cause any competitive banter.

Ralph always practices social distancing, standing a mile behind the baseline when returning serves. :lol6:

Again here in Cali the governor said the timetable is speeding up cautiously as long as the data backs it up

Excerpt:
During that briefing, Newsom said the state was "weeks, not months" away from the modifications and on Monday he acknowledged that it became "days, not weeks," due to the state's efforts to improve testing, tracing and surge capacity at hospitals: "This is a sober announcement and done on the basis of health directors in local communities guiding our efforts here at the state."

Angell said California "is in a really good place" in terms of surge capacity at hospitals, with 2,072 beds currently available and 14 facilities ready to accept new patients. There are also 10,000 ventilators currently available and the state is reaching its goal of administering 25,000 tests per day across 86 testing sites, she added. Newsom said there have been 39 deaths across the state of California over the past 24 hours due to COVID-19 illness for a total death count of 2,172 to date.

Monday's news follows a weekend of protests from Orange County to Rancho Cucamonga as some California residents have grown frustrated with the pandemic-related closures, including O.C. beaches, as well as mass unemployment. The governor acknowledged the frustrations and said they had to wait for tracing and testing capabilities to meet the moment.

"This is an optimistic day as we see a little bit of a ray of sunshine on the horizon," Newsom said.

French Tennis Federations has refunded all tickets purchased for the original dates of Roland Garos by the end of May,and a new ticketing procedure will be opened if it goes ahead. There is speculation it could even start one week later than the rescheduled Sept 20th - October 4.FFT has already stated they are prepared to hold the event with no fans.

It would be amazing for Rafa to be able to win number 20.:dance3:

Here in Canada they will be allowing people to play tennis (singles) and golf in about a week, as it is easy to maintain a distance of 2 meters. So I think that professional Tennis will be played this year probably with no fans or maybe a 25% capacity.

They will make money from sponsorships and TV deals, and I’m sure that more people then usual will watch. I don’t think the whole season will be cancelled as we are lucky that Tennis can be played with social distancing.

I think we will be very lucky and we will get to witness Nadal make history lifting number 20. It will be an inspiration to the whole planet in these difficult times. :good:

It's pretty clear that the USO and RG are doing everything they can to figure out how they might possibly play their events this year, but they will have to decide pretty soon, esp. USO. First issue will be if the respective governments allow it, and then what it will take to get players into the country and quarantine them. But I bet they are also aware if they can pull off a live sports event they may get more viewers than usual...at least it's some live sport.

Luckily we will have cycling. All 3 GS. Tour, Giro and Vuelta. Too much poomp was made about this virus. Vacine wont be out within a year. So even Ozzy 2021 could be canecled in that case. More pro cycling teams wont survive by the end of the year without sport. Now if group of 200 riders can join in Peloton, than no harm to our tennis guys. Just solve public, maybe each 2nd seat would be empty and thats is it. Ballgirls/boys might be out, no problem.

Novak, Rafa and Federer can look at the overall picture of "more caution: let's do this thing right", or "the speculated protocol is not practical" but I'm guessing the rank and file who have had their income decimated are the ones who are chomping at the bit to have some kind of regular tournament play sooner than later.

There will be a 14 day quarantine required for players arriving outside of the US.
Restrictions of be able to practice
Limit of one person per competitor at matches
Players not able to move around from their hotel.
Quite frankly with all the 'unrest' in America at present some players do not want to travel there,I see their point of view.
I think it would be better to cancel the USO this year.

Margaret, I must say that I hate to hear you say that. The basic protocols you cite I think make sense, mostly, though I think having players not leave their hotels but to got to practice and matches seems severe, at least from the POV of right now. With masks and caution, people do move about a bit, even in NYC. We've just started our Phase One opening, so we'll see how that goes, but people are starting to go more back to normal, even here. My industry is starting to try to go back to work, (filmmaking,) and it's not easy, but we respect new norms. As to the "unrest," I think that's overly alarmist. This level of protest won't last much longer. It has already calmed down quite a bit. George Floyd was laid to rest today. The conversations will go on, but the protesting abates. Particularly the worst of outside agitation and opportunistic looting.

Personally, I agree with Evans. We'd all like to have the Superstars participate, but I think it can go on without them. Think of the possibilities if they don't! When was the first new Major winner on the men's side? Cilic in 2014?
