I thought FO was motivated to hold the tournament because the cost of the roof has to be paid for. If FO and USO won’t proceed without spectators, it’s very possible the first major will be AO 2021.
Agreed. This non spectator attending format is not going to work IMO for ATP or WTA

I'm cautiously optimistic they may hold the FO and the USO. One way is to limit the number of spectators in their venues, which means placing spectators several seats apart.

Every match on TV will look like an early morning session, including the finals.

i am not optimistic..how are the players going to get there with no international air travel? and now talking about 2 week quarantine for folk entering a new country in the future ?.

insurance cover for big tourneys at a risky rime could also be difficult..if folk visit, get ill and die...

There have been rumors, though I read today the US Open will make a decision now in mid June,if they will play the tournament in NYC.

Exactly, it's not just playing without public. it's also the traveling and all players with their own team (several people) the checking in the airports, the distance into the airplane, hotels, restaurants or whatever they are going to eat. I can see it a little bit complicate

I’m not saying it wouldn’t be complicated, but business runs the world, so I can’t see how they won’t try to work in international travel with new guidelines and protocol. It’s either that or shutting down indefinitely.

Some hard-hit countries are tip toeing as we speak into easing some restrictions, so all the sports federations in conjunction with government regulators, etc, have to be working on things.

Not just sports, obviously, but all industries/business its logical they’re trying to see how things can possibly be accommodated. Testing athletes, as in doping, For infections, a few weeks before a competition and on a regular basis, some health protocols of course would have to be in place. Is 4 months from now to soon? Perhaps, but what’s to say 5 , 6 or 7 months from now something couldn’t be in place.

NYC and the neighboring states Conn and NJ are averaging about 1,000 cases a day..unless that number can get under 100 range ..the ATP and WTA would be playing pure Russian roulette by having their best players flying in for a 3-4 week period when the chances of getting the virus is extremely extraordinary high.

So again talking speculation 6 months down the line:

The possibility of the USO played at Indian Wells in November:

Excerpt:
“All of us want the U.S. Open to happen and we are ready to help with increased (coronavirus) testing and to help players get in and out of the country," Dowse said.”

Governor Newsom was stated as saying large sporting events was the last thing to be eased back into the state so it’s wait and see obviously.

Wertheim was just talking on Tennis Channel. He says holding the tournament without fans is back on the table. He says all options are on the table, as the USTA is very motivated to see some revenue from the USO, as it is the big cash infusion for all of their programs throughout the year. No doubles is an option. Indian Wells is an option. He says that, unless and government prohibits them from holding it, they want to figure it out. And he did mention working with Gavin Newsome in CA if NY can't be done.

Well some players may not be able to play because of international travel bans, unless they are lifted.

I sincerely hope we're traveling by late August.

Here in Australia we are banned travelling overseas at present and our borders are closed, except to Australians.Things could change by August and players could get special compensation, even here in Sydney we are still under restrictions,we have not had the deaths like in other countries.

I live in CA. I don’t see Newsom allowing tennis at IW. He has said no sports until a vaccine is found.

I agree. Florida is one of the few states that has seen a 14 day reduction and thus meeting the gateway criteria to open up. Also, the republican Governor there (DeSantis) really wants to open everything up gradually, but quickly. He has already declared "victory" over the virus (even if it does not mean anything). May be they can hold USO at Miami.

No, I have not read anywhere about this possibility. I am generating this possibility since both NY and CA seems unlikely places for USO this year.

Understandably Newsom is being cautious but if a vaccine isn’t widely available until, say midway 2021 there is going to be pushback from a-lot of concerns, not just sports, for an opening up with new protocols; as opposed to shutting down all sports for a year *if* the numbers continue to decline.

Florida's governor amidst shelter in place order deemed WWE an "essential" industry that could continue to operate.

Really? because here everyday there are more infected, only they are opening stores very essentials, it's a little better than before but still we have to be very very careful
