Congratulations Serena on your triumph over Sloane!!! Here's hoping you go all the way and make it #17 at USOpen 2013!!!

Short of injury, I think it's a done deal. It's simply a matter of going through the motions.

3 matches left, don't be going too fast.

Moderator - please stop changing words in my post. If I want to use the word "dislike" that is what I want to use I could see if it was a cuss word, but "dislike" is the word i want to use towards Sloane..this is not China and I believe you are going to far in rewording my post.

I don't know if Sloane is the "heir apparent", I do not have a crystal ball telling me the future. This is what I do know based on my observations. Sloane has a lethal forehand and has much potential. She has has lazy footwork and an attackable backhand (although Serena played mostly to her forehand). She does have potential to be a top player if she works on her deficiencies; this should be acknowledged regardless of how we feel about her personally. The baseline exchanges of forehands with Serena were incredible during the first set; the girl can "hang". She does seem to get up for majors (something Serena used to do) while playing lack-luster tennis in smaller tournaments. She needs to change that mind set. Regarding her "arrogance", I remember when a young Venus and Serena were also accused of being arrogant because they did not defer to older players, supposedly.

Colleen: I'm not saying the girl doesn't have a ton of potential, she does.

But let her win something before they crown her. There have been other

players who have shot up the rankings and they never talked about them

as Heir to Serena, Why Sloane. Look at her and you know why.

As to the arrogance. Yes V & S were called arrogant. But they won.

" It ain't braggin if you can do it " as the sage said.

Just watched the match again while recording it and

late in the second set after Serena hit a winner Carillo

said this was a " Magisterial " performance by Serena

Never heard that one before. Wondered if that was a word

mag·is·te·ri·al [màjjə stree əl]
adj
1. dignified: showing great dignity and authority
2. domineering: behaving in an overbearing or dictatorial way
3. masterly and authoritative: produced by or characteristic of
a teacher, scholar, or expert

I'd say it was on point

way to go Mary!

RDJ11, I remembered when Mary C used the word, I turned to my young daughter and told her we have a new term to add to your vocabulary list; remembered to whom Mary was referring to!

Regarding Sloane, it seems that some people want to throw the baby out with the dirty bathwater. Yes she had to earn "something" and at 20 I guess 3 or 4 quarterfinal appearances is not enough. The media "hypes" her, yet some vilify her as if she controls the media. As for her lack of graciousness towards Serena, she will learn as she matures.

I sure hope so Colleen: I gave her a pass back in march

for youth and immaturity but its wearing thin.

I think Sloane has alot of talent and could very well be the best of the bunch of upcomers. I would like to see her channel the same slam-focus to a smaller tournament and play consistently for 5 days so she can get a title under her belt. A small tournament would be happy to have her and I'm sure she would sell tickets for them. Even Jamie Hampton and Melanie Oudin have been to tournament finals. Oudin actually winning one on grass. No reason Sloane cannot do the same. She should start w/ something small like a 250 and focus on playing well consistently for a week.

I thought I was the only one who saw that Sloane is jealous of Serena.I was watching the Arthur Ashe kids day thing with the first lady and the look on Sloanes face was so sour. She couldnt bear to see Serena being so close to the First Lady..
She gets it from her mother...who brought her up.

She probably think she's too good to play in a small tournament it will be beneath her to do that.

I really hope that's not the case. If she thinks that way she has no business out there. All women have to support the tour or it will die. Just think if Billie and the others had that mentality 40 years ago. There would be nothing to celebrate now.

Wow, I can see most people hold a grudge against Sloane even if Serena has moved on in life. Sloane has played smaller tournaments like Hobart, Charleston, New Haven. She just hasn't gotten anywhere which needs to change. She says she is playing 4 tournaments to try and get into the top 10, so she has big goals. Let's see if she can execute and achieve them. I would say she needs to win a tournament this year to try and start her 2014 campaign on a great note.

Agree w/ that Sunday. I'm glad she has committed to playing some smaller events. Now let's see if the focus is there.

The way Serena was hitting those powerful cc forehands, I doubt she has moved on  She let her racquet do the talking!! And yes, I can hold a grudge ;)

Serena hits those CC FH when she plays Venus too.
