In the rematch Sunday, the 16-time Grand Slam champion served big and

controlled points against the 20-year-old. From 4-4 in the first set, Williams

won eight of the last nine games.

"Obviously, she's No. 1 in the world for a reason," Stephens said. "I thought

she played really well herself. Obviously, it didn't go how I wanted. The second

set got away from me a little bit. All in all, I thought I competed well and played

well. That's all you can do, really."

Hello, Louisiana! A couple here from "Who dat-"land. I didn't see the match, but it looked to be a decisive win, by the scoreline.

Hi Moxie... Just bidin my time til Crawfish season. It was pretty decisive after 4 - 4

in the first. Serena shifted into that extra gear she has and ........

Hey! I wonder what " mind game " Serena used to intimidate Sloane.

Thats what Sloane says Serena uses.

I'd say it was the one that goes about 123+mph

It was a good match from both. Serena did relax in the 2nd set and was more aggressive. Sloane never adjusted and kept going for winners that weren't there, thus more UE's on her part. That's where she needs to clean up her game. Serena was the same way when she was younger, a bit of an UE machine.
please dont compare the two because they are very different..Serena at 20yrs was an accomplished player with lots of titles and a slam in her back pocket.Serena is a once in a lifetime phenom and Sloane doesnt have the same qualities..Serena won 1999 Usa Open with almost no errors.I refuse to accept that Sloane has the same qualities as Serena :nono just watch USA Open 1999 and tell me a 17yr old Serena can be compared to Scone..l

Of course they aren't the same player Tossip. Don't be silly because you don't like Sloane. What you saw today was the master teaching the student how it should be done. Don't tell me Serena didn't make alot of errors back then. Both her and Venus used to make a ton of errors but they also made alot of winners and their numbers would almost be even. They were still winning matches of course, but the errors were there. Just as Serena learned to cutdown on errors, Sloane needs to do it too.
and you are silly for calling me silly:rolleyes::rolleyes: but they were winning whereas Sloane at 20ys with no title to her name cant be compared to the sisters...she can only wish.
today they asked her about Althea Gibson and she said... no comment.who does that ..if they had asked Duval she would given an educated answer.Sloane is just too self absorbed for my liking..thank goodness she was knocked out of the event.

I cannot believe she said "No Comment" to that Althea Gibson's question. I truly hate that girl Sloane with a passion. She truly has an identify problem.

:puzzled..she has serious identity issues..if she had been asked about Clijsters she will gladly chat all night about that....she called Serena her coworker:snigger..maybe she doesnt see herself as a black person:laydownlaughing she is something else.

"There were times I played some really good tennis," Stephens said. "Second set got away from me a little bit, but overall I thought I played great. I thought she did a lot of things really well. Like I said, she's No. 1 in the world for a reason. All in all I thought she played great.

Here is a lesson Sloane can take from Serena; Serena would never say that she played "great" after a loss, especially a loss in a slam event. She would never be satisfied with that result.

Will you guys give it a rest, if Serena can take the high road with Sloane it shouldn't be that hard for fans. Sloane was asked if she meaning Sloane herself felt she faced stigma as a black tennis player. Althea Gibson was thrown in that question with the commemorative stamp. Sloane had every right to say no comment to a question regarding her personal life. The question wasn't about Althea Gibson it was about Sloane and what she felt about being a black tennis player. Reading comprehension is a wonderful tool.

This is an article on the ESPN front page by Melissa Isaacson

You would think these media-types could get their info right.

There is no excuse for this kind of mistake in her position

Providing bulletin board material is never a good idea, especially when it covers the entire corkboard. Michael Jordan made a career of creating scores to settle, even when they weren't there. Champions never forget.

But Stephens also has to give herself a break. Yes, Williams won her first Grand Slam title at 17 with the 1999 French Open. She won her second at 17 as well with the US Open that same year. But 20 is the new 15. And Stephens is wise in feeling satisfied with the quantum leap she has taken this year, just as she is smart setting her next goal at breaking into the top 10.

Then Greg Garber and McManus on the video part kept referring to Sloane as the

heir-apparent to Serena. Sloane has not done anything yet to warrant such

a statement She has not won anything or even been to a final. Where is all this

passing the torch to Sloane coming from. There are other players ( like Vika )

who are much more qualified as an heir-apparent. Just because Sloane is black

does not mean She is another Serena Williams. Serena has 31 GS titles

Sloane has none. There is no comparison.

RDJ - every article that woman writes is always full of errors and she keeps her job had that been any other writer he/she would have been fired. She is truly bad and I mean really bad.

Serena is very competetive and a loss is not good enough...thats why she good because she is seeking perfection.Sloane is atheletic but not competetive nor hungry...next year she will defending a lot of points and we might see her plateau or crater..:snigger

I don't know if Sloane is the "heir apparent", I do not have a crystal ball telling me the future. This is what I do know based on my observations. Sloane has a lethal forehand and has much potential. She has has lazy footwork and an attackable backhand (although Serena played mostly to her forehand). She does have potential to be a top player if she works on her deficiencies; this should be acknowledged regardless of how we feel about her personally. The baseline exchanges of forehands with Serena were incredible during the first set; the girl can "hang". She does seem to get up for majors (something Serena used to do) while playing lack-luster tennis in smaller tournaments. She needs to change that mind set. Regarding her "arrogance", I remember when a young Venus and Serena were also accused of being arrogant because they did not defer to older players, supposedly.
