He was getting his ass kicked and down 2 sets to 1 till Zverev got too fatigued to play his game and Nadal then won sets 4 and 5 routinely. You also know damn well but have conveniently hoped everyone here forgot (we haven't) but Federer losing to him in Halle 2016 was expected after his knee surgery and everyone and their dog knew and could see he had a visible back injury in Montreal 2017 as it was major news back then and he entered the USO 2017 stupidly injured too.

If physically he wasn't compromised, I doubt tbh that he'd have lost either of those as Zverev wasn't that good back then and the surface is slow at Montreal but, anyway, he's a decent player when he's playing well as we saw last few days. Count yourself lucky and Nadal also that Zverev had crap cardio at the AO 2017 or Nadal would have lost well before the final.
