1) They probably had a thicker skin or just wanted to show that they don't back away.

But that implies that they're aware of racism at that tournament and have decided to stand up to it, or ignore it.

Have they ever said they noticed racism at the tournament? Or is it only the WS who have complained?

There was no racial incidents that I heard of before at IW and we haven't

heard of any since then. I think, as stated in the Newman article above, that

the circumstances in 2001 all came together in a " perfect Storm " scenario.

The match fixing accusations, The Dementieva comments, the failure reporting

the injury, the crowd feeling cheated, all came together to create that moment

in time.

Since Serena's match was the final most of the other players who had lost had

gone on to Miami for the next event and were not present to witness what

happened. Also these other players were not the Williams Sisters. It did not

happen to them and they could not or would not afford the loss of revenue

and points every year to support the Sisters. For the newer players it was so

long ago they may not even know the details of what happened. Taylor Townsend

was a child then. So was Sloane and Keys. They are far distanced from 2001 IW.

RJD, I think this is a cool-headed assessment, and I also appreciate the article that you posted above. There were a lot of things that came together to create the 'bad blood.' Personally, I've always applauded Serena and Venus for sticking to their guns. They had the power of the purse, meaning their marquee names, to keep a focus on a racist incident. I agree with tented that it can't be said that the tournament itself is racist, but when they were made to feel humiliated and hard done by a stadium of fans, (and the tournament, in the subsequent lack of understanding,) they refused to lend their star power to it.

That said, and the position of the article's author notwithstanding, I'm glad Serena is going back. After a strong point was made, it gives everyone a chance to heal an old wound. That is fine states(wo)manship.

FYI Serena is not going back to IW

Special: On the IW banner there are pictures of The big guys

along with Pova, Kvit, Arad, and Li Na............No Serena

Are you predicting/guessing that she will not go or you have reliable information that
she will not go. If you do have reliable information, can you post a link to your information.
Thanks

And if it is simply a guess/prediction, then state it as such -- "My guess is she's not going to IW" -- instead of phrasing it in a declarative manner.

No Serena because she will not be there and I hope she never plays there again. They do not deserve her.

I can't believe you are trying to tell me how I should write my post. Are you kidding me? This is not China or Russia.....:wow:

Not at all; tone, attitude, grammar, and good punctuation are required around here or you'll be scolded like a child! Heaven knows why I bother at times! I feel so underappreciated at times! :violins: :cry :nono :lolz: :laydownlaughing

Werthiem's Mailbag Question

It may be premature to discuss this, but what are we to make of Serena Williams' name being on the entry list at Indian Wells? I watched the match that day in 2001 and was horrified that an American crowd could do that to one of its own, yet Serena prevailed and I could see why she and Venus never wanted to return. When I first read the headline, my first thought was "good for her". Who would be the biggest winner if she does go through with it... Serena or the tournament?
-- Tom Hickinbotham, Atlanta

• Again, we waver between premature speculation and realism. Serena could withdraw her name from the entry list tomorrow. Let's not get ahead of ourselves. Then again, given how delicately all parties have treated this issue, let's just say that it's unlikely this was a paperwork error. If she were to play, this is the proverbial win-win. Let's just leave it at that for now.

You have completely missed the point. All GSM and I were trying to do is get you to tell us whether your post with the single sentence "FYI Serena is not going back to IW" was based on your opinion, or on something you read. Asking you to clarify something you wrote is a reasonable request.

So, which is it? Were you providing your opinion, or do you have some proof that Serena is not going back to IW?

Because you don't know how, or because you can't back up your initial statement so this is your cop out?

I have wondered this for some time. Who would benefit more

The tournament certainly not the sisters. The fans would get the pleasure of seeing the GOAT play and the tournament would make tons of $. I do not see a benefit in it for the sisters at all.

This is a discussion forum. That means there's the back and forth exchanging of information and opinions. If someone writes something which is unclear, it is reasonable and expected that others will ask that person to clarify it. If you're unwilling to cooperate with others, and answer simple questions about what you post, then you shouldn't be here.

I don't think I should be forced to make anything clear. This is not a research paper for college where I'm expecting a grade I am just telling you what I know and I should not be bullied or threatened to do so and that should be my prerogative...don't you think?

Special700, you misunderstand. No one is bullying. It is a convention of these boards, where we don't merely accept unfounded statements, to back them up with links. You are entitled to your opinion, but if you state it as fact, we look for validation. It's the only way to keep debating on fair terms.

As I have watched the saga unfold over the years I

can't help but get the feeling the IW promoters have been

throwing shade at the Williams Sisters and were being

dishonest with the public.
