In my opinion, Serena fans should be concerned rather than happy. It is possible that she did intend to play at Indian Wells, but had to pull out because her back injury is more serious than she had initially thought.

Maybe you should read her statement carefully again. Serena never intended to play IW and she will never play it....period. Her back had nothing to do with it. I don't know why you would think that Serena would ever want to play that tournament again. Maybe you should take another look at that final again and try to experience what Serena went through. She was a kid, a mere 19yrs old and to have a bunch of white people applaud every error you make, and applaud every point your foreign opponent make, and to hear them call your derogatory names do you have any idea what that would do to Serena should she step foot back on that court again? I just do not understand the people's thinking who keep saying she should go back there. They should try using some empathy.

This back problem (and other injuries) is quite disconcerting. Serena is on the brink of matching or exceeding the record American GS count, and her body is betraying her. It is sad to see an aging athlete. Talk of "finding motivation after a loss" etc no longer applies. She can still beat anyone when healthy, but how long before the injuries mount and prevent wins no matter how motivated she feels? She has to be very judicious about scheduling and training.

I think you are crying prematurely. She has not even deteriorated to the extent
of Federer yet and you have already started crying.

I think she will get to at least 19. She will probably never win FO again, as that is
one tournament that requires lot of physicality (and which can mute her serve).

But, I don't think she will come close to Steffi's count though.

While she does not have a true rival, it appears that she is prone to sporadic
upsets by random folks and also it looks like this phenomenon will continue.
You should never use that statement when you are talking about Serena. People never learn.

This is ridiculous. If she never intended to play why did she leave the name in the
roster? If she never intended to play why did she openly say that after seeing the movie
on Mandela, she considered playing in IW again.

Let us face it. You do not want Serena to play IW again. You are projecting your
wishes as though they are Serena's intentions. Get real.

Did you notice that there is a word called "probably" in that statement. Perhaps, you
should pick up a dictionary and look into what it means.

Your safe word "probably" just in case she doesn't win......Oh yea I know how that works.

Sain Petersburg (United States) (AFP) - World number one Serena Williams has withdrawn from next month's WTA tournament at Indian Wells, an event which she entered last month after boycotting it since 2001.

The move came only a few hours after the 17-time Grand Slam singles champion withdrew from next week's $2.4 million WTA event in Doha, Qatar, due to a back injury she suffered at the Australian Open.

Williams, however, did not cite her injury as a reason for deciding against playing at Indian Wells in March.

"After careful consideration, I will not return to the Indian Wells BNP Paribas Open this year," Williams said. "I send my best wishes to everyone involved with the tournament."

Great find, RJ. With this new info, I believe Special was right all along, and my speculations were incorrect. I am going to IW and will miss Serena, but glad she is playing Dubai.
