I think we got a nice bunch at WTF this year. The Big Three versus the next Gen, completely skipping a gen in between. I don't think (didn't fact check) this happened before at WTF. There would always be one guy from lost Gen.

No, he would not retire without the injury, but he would be in for a huge fight even without it and he knew that, which is why I think he felt the climb was too steep with nagging pain. I don't blame him for retiring (nor do I blame Nadal for retiring against Delpo). I think it was smart in both cases because they put an asterisk next to those losses.

Yes, but not who was better H2H after 2015. I hate to admit it but Wawrinka has generally gotten the better of their matches since 2015. The losses in the two GS Finals were painful as someone who was rooting for Djokovic on both occasions.

Damn painfull, of course.
Since 2015 they are 3:3, 2:1 in slams, at the second loss in NY Novak was already downwards, lucky to even reach the F.
Stanislas isnt his dearest opponent, no doubt about that, but i believe with a healthy Novak we would have seen winning him. Looking at the level Stanislaus is showing since his surgery.

Tsonga gifted that service game to Nadal.

Winning a title recently, gave Shapo confidence. That is what I will attribute his current performance to.
Also, you have to think growing up in Canada, he played a lot of indoor tennis. Plus it suits his game.

Ha! Crazy tweener from Rafa. He's been watching too much Kyrgios and Monfils.

Rafa-Shapo is a nice semi. Two lefties that seem to be in fine form. Opportunity for Shapo to see where his game is really at.
If Rafa's memory is good. .he will kick Denis 's next Gen junk into the court surface like Djoker did Tits

I don't think the injury was that bad. It clearly wasn't or he wouldn't have won Tokyo barely a month later without dropping a set.

If Djokovic was playing, say, Schwartzman instead of Wawrinka in that match, he would have won in straights and battled through the rest of the tournament. I think he was dealing with some pain and knew that even without it he would be in trouble.

So he did the same thing Nadal did against Delpo in 2018.....retire to have a convenient excuse for why he lost.
If Djokovic were playing someone else, and wasn't behind, sure, he'd have pressed on. But then he'd have had Medvedev in the next round, and what happened with Stan in the 4th would very likely have happened in the QFs. You've made the assumption that Djokovic wasn't that injured, was losing to Stan because he's a bad match-up to Nole, and he retired to save face. That's rather insulting to Djokovic, from where I sit. Yes, he recovered enough to win Tokyo, but basically everyone admits it was a weak field, and it was a month later. Stan isn't really the same player since surgery, or really wasn't yet at the USO, so it's likely Novak was behind because of the injury. In 2014, I think, Novak had a wrist injury and played Roger in the SF? in Rome. He tried hard in the first, and it was close, but pretty much gave up on the 2nd and lost in straights. Didn't retire, but you could tell he wasn't going to press the issue right before RG. This, however, was a Major, and I personally believe that'd he'd have gone all out to move on, if his shoulder hadn't prevented him. He has full-on admitted he wants to be the guy with the most Majors of the 3 at the end of the day. I find it not credible that he would have bailed v. Wawrinka just to avoid embarrassment.

I actually find this match a worry. Shapo full of confidence, and as I said, I think indoors suits his game. When he swings freely, he's dangerous. Novak has the easier SF, I'd say.
