I thought Novak was injured and retired v. Wawrinka.
He was handicaped, underwent medical exams , rested and then played Tokyo.I don't think the injury was that bad. It clearly wasn't or he wouldn't have won Tokyo barely a month later without dropping a set.
If Djokovic was playing, say, Schwartzman instead of Wawrinka in that match, he would have won in straights and battled through the rest of the tournament. I think he was dealing with some pain and knew that even without it he would be in trouble.
So he did the same thing Nadal did against Delpo in 2018.....retire to have a convenient excuse for why he lost.

Tendinitis or Bursitis are the most likely diagnosis. Partial tear not that easy to exclude.
I think it doesn’t matter who he played against, Stanislas not that good, look what happened to him in the next round.
Only he knows for sure.

...and the "know-it-all" MD's residing on the site! :cuckoo:
If Chung or Diego showed a level that allows them to stay in the rallies, with this shoulder, yes!I'm not saying that he wasn't experiencing any pain at all.....I'm saying that even without any pain Wawrinka is the most unpleasant match-up for him on the entire tour. Do you really think that if he was playing Schwartzman or Chung he would have lost or retired from the tournament after winning? I don't.
Geez, That was a smack down he put on Monf.
you are right with his matches against the Swiss, but I can ask you back: Would he retire without injury? The injury is the main factor.Again, I'm not saying he wasn't in any pain at all. I'm saying that even without it Wawrinka causes him major problems and has taken 2 majors away from him (even after falling behind a set). Wawrinka has loved playing Djokovic in recent years and finds a steady rhythm against him. I don't think Djokovic liked his chances of coming back from a set down, especially with the pain nagging at him.
I NEVER enjoy this match up of my two favorite players .. although I am pulling for Rafa.. JoWillieTs has already won this event 11 years ago over Cali's BFP.Tsonga should give nadal a hard test but as long nadal keeps wawrinka beating level up he will win just picked up he's 50 win of the season for 11th time nadal looking good for the title.
Interesting combo of favorite players.I NEVER enjoy this match up of my two favorite players .. although I am pulling for Rafa.. JoWillieTs has already won this event 11 years ago over Cali's BFP.

He had real battles with him before the matches you mentioned, and he won. H2h and overall successe shows clearly who the better player is.
No, he would not retire without the injury, but he would be in for a huge fight even without it and he knew that, which is why I think he felt the climb was too steep with nagging pain. I don't blame him for retiring (nor do I blame Nadal for retiring against Delpo). I think it was smart in both cases because they put an asterisk next to those losses.
Yes, but not who was better H2H after 2015. I hate to admit it but Wawrinka has generally gotten the better of their matches since 2015. The losses in the two GS Finals were painful as someone who was rooting for Djokovic on both occasions.
