I think the actual quote was "I'd rather play beautiful tennis than win!" Sorry! She was a fave of my era with Evonne Goolagong! Unfortunately she was emotionally crippled; mostly her own countrymen putting the weight of the world on her! The only thing that saved her was her aggressive game! I can still see her coming back to beat Evert at a WTT match-up! The vid might still be on You-Tube! Thank Gawd she won Wimbledon in '77! It saved her career even though she owned other majors! :face-with-hand-over-mouth:
The Gong! she was one of my fav players ever, she used to glide on those grass courts at Wimbledon
These days she has coaching clinic's in the out back of Australia teaching Aboriginal children to play tennis
She is a Aussie Icon !

hah i knew you would get the Ginny reference.
Yes i know the exact quote, but Well duh... thus the term “paraphrase” .

However Virginia later claimed she never said it.
Well I gave you most of the day, but gonna have to call BS! If paraphrasing someone, you need to have some facsimile of what the author said! The only thing comparable in our two posts is we're both speaking about tennis! :face-with-tears-of-joy:

I got that yeah. No one would expect Gasquet to win against any good player though which was all I was saying. Guy is one and done since his back injuries which is unfortunate.
Let's be honest, he's really never lived up to potential.

Oh Fiero , to paraprase Virgina Wade, “I’d rather win ugly than lose beautifully...”
I never understand these people for whom sport is about ballet not winning. If how it "looks" meant so much to Fiero, for example, he should have stuck with Federer. Let's not pretend that Djokovic doesn't play some butt-ugly tennis, too. Plus, I wonder if Fiero has failed to notice that Nadal is a lefty. Lefty tennis does look different to people. ;)

There was so many french players in the draw, but only Monfils, Gasquet and some guy named Caucaud made it to R2.

Casper Ruud (15) continues to impress with a straight sets win over Majchrzak 63 62 64
Could he be a dark horse of the competition?
Would someone find a tee shirt for Zverev and burn his sleeveless...thanks in advance.

The „claycourt specialist“ Big John Isner is surprising me again. 2 set lead against Filip Krajinović.

Either player in the Nishokori v Khachanov needs to step up and take control of the 4th set,Karen had a early break and had all the momentum in the 4th set, dropped his serve in the wind. Both players have been taken to deuce on their serves.,fought off BPs.
Karen leads 2 sets to one.

The 5 set Master Kei wins the 5th set ,26 times in his career

Kei d Karen (23) 46 62 26 64 64

Kei after his 5 set win,

"Trust me I hate playing 5 sets.I'm not doing this on purpose".

Moxie if you are around what do you know about Pedro Martinez from Spain, just watching the 3rd set in his match against The Young Greek,he is doing well,The Young Greek is winning, but not having his own way at times.
The Young Greek's bhand is way off today at times in this match
The Young Greek gets broken serving for the match 5-2,it has been a scratchy performance from him today.
The Young Greek d Martinez 63 64 63....he will play John Isner next.

Out of interest, why is poor Nishikori getting shafted with scheduling ? Says he's due to play again tomorrow ?

Torn by this McDonald/Garin match up! Have watched Garin over the last few months making a name for himself being in TV matches week after week! McDonald's an "up and comer" I guess, but he's beginning to PO me; Big TIME! Garin's trying to give it to him allowing multiple BP's against his serve, but McD obviously doesn't want it! This'll be the epitome of a choke job if he allows Garin to climb out of that hole! - - - IT'S DONE! :angry-face:
