Oooofff! Meddy just had one of those first rounds. It has to suck coming off the heel of his first and biggest title on clay. It reminds me of the time Serena was red hot on clay and lost in the first round as well at RG.
What year was Serena red hot on clay and then lost in the first round?

I would say 2012.
If I remember correctly, I believe that she lost to Garbine Muguruza. In hindsight, it really wasn't that bad of a loss, considering she went far in that tournament, and went on to win multiple slams. However, the loss ended up being the best thing to ever happen to Serena because it caused her to hire PM, which maximized the potential of her career in her 30s.

It was French player Razzano Serena lost to in the her first round match in 2012

I would say 2012.
You're Right. I just looked it up. She won the Family Circle Cup in Charleston, won the blue Smurf courts of Madrid and then had to retire in the Rome SF against Li Na citing a lower back issue. She came into RG as the fave and politely bowed out to Razzano in R1. But as @PhiEaglesfan712 said, it was the best thing that could have happened to her because that's when she hired Patrick and went on that incredible run in her 30's.

I can understand them not shaking hands with Russian and Belorussian players, even though it’s not the players fault. I thought the French crowd were despicable to Marta Kostyuk. But didn’t daddy Djoker say something ridiculous recently regarding the war? Novak will be dragged down by that stupid man some day, could be soon…
Kieran,
Not to defend the French fans, but there is more history between these 2. These are the comments that Kostyk said on Saturday before they played.

They’re not hugely nasty comments though, are they? I think the French could have been more sympathetic towards Marta. They might not remember what it is for their country to be invaded, but they could have tried…
It's not about being hugely nasty. They are inappropriate and shouldn't be discussed to the media, period. She knows nothing about Saba's family or her situation to assume why someone in Saba's position has or hasn't done something about their family

Well that’s true but I don’t think that excuses the French fans at all. I think we all know that a Belorussian or Russian player has to be careful what they say, they come from countries run by thugs and tyrants, but I still sympathise more with Marta and the Ukrainian players. Even a small gesture like refusing to shake hands is sign of how desperate they are to remind people of the terrible thing that’s done to them…

No. It doesn't excuse their behavior. I'm just making a point that she came out to the media, the day before the match w/ her inappropriate comments. You don't think the crowd were aware of her comments beforehand?

It’s possible but that doesn’t excuse them. I don’t like Parisians at the best of times. I think Paris is ruined by them. I haven’t visited Paris in over 20 years because it’s filled with Parisians. Bad enough that Paris is surrounded by French people as it is, but to be filled with Parisians? Boo!

But seriously, when France surrendered in the last war they were in, they understood better how hopelessly distressing that was, to put it mildly. Now they're a bit smug and forgetful, thinking that a handshake is important when the player involved is under a terrible strain?
