No1e's 66th tile and record 30th Masters title. Also record career prize money over 102M. Widen the gap over #2's points

Saw Murray two weeks ago sitting some 10 meters in front of me, but I couldn't go Parcher because stadium was full of secret service. ;)

Writing off winning Cinci for another year. Lol

is Cincinnati one of, or only one , he has not yet won? so many he won i;ve lost track.
!!

but if so -- i think it's not such a ''hole'' in one's resume considering where he is now -- among the all-time greats for sure.

so - while he's at the top of his career - the olympic gold would take precedence and he , in such an event - where this time it is about nationalities in part -- he , we should not forget has that other motive that has driven him all his career --

SERBIA -- NOVAK was never shy about saying that while this is all a very selfish career -- a part of his motivation has always been "i want to show i have some quality too....but i also want to help show the world a different way of looking at my country -- that we are not what sometimes has been negatively written about".

and even for saying such things -- especially in his early years -- he was NOT so warmly welcomed in the largely ''western'' ''values" press and fandom...just some ''eastern slavic person talking above his station" --

and THAT'S one reason I - long ago in part also defended him from put-downs in websites.

i am telling you -- NOLE is simply not just ALREADY one of the all-time greats --

he is also right up there among the all-time most dignified champions and competitors i have ever seen after following so many great ones since when Navratilova and McEnroe still played in the late 80's.

there is something so ''philosophical" about the way Novak has gone about his career - his single-mindedness in reaching his accomplishments against not just already more established ''golden rivalry' - such as that by nadal and federer -- and even in the early years be treated as often as not as if Nole was just an ''interloper" or ''party crasher" who ''would never be as great as "

roger or nadal .. and nole had to ENDURE that almost palpably cold or less-than enthusiastic reception from tennis in general , imo.

and yet -- look at where he is now -- and how dignified he has been really through not just NOW -- but even more so in his struggle to 'challenge' and be ''accepted" ...

he is something extraordinary not just as a player and champion -- but as a person, imo.

This is true and it's a darn shame, if you ask me. I don't understand this need to elevate some and disparage others; a sign of insecurity, I think.

i'm guilty of that ''disparaging" -- in the sense of my own biases about players..

but for me what is not nice among players is when THEY disparage each other (i mean it is one thing to use critical faculties - as opposed to just putdowns because of some kind of jealousy or refusal to acknowledge your own ''rival" in accomplishments) ...

and there HAVE been times when a few players were like this towards the ''upstart" Nole -- one of them was, imo, Roger himself, along with Ljubicic and any that seemed to be so friendly towards roger, they behaved almost like

''protectors" of his legacy than as rivals...

and nole had to bear that kind of atmosphere from what i observed over the early years.

and that's partly what i mean by how well Nole carried himself.

but that's more or less over now -- as he has proven himself in ways that VINDICATED his EARLY statements that triggered those disparaging or dismissive remarks about his ''ambition" .

if people recall -- when the FEDERER/NADAL rivalry was at its ''hottest" and no one seemed to be on the horizon to 'break the duopoly" (just like no one thought anyone COULD challenge roger in HIS early dominance ) -

and nole came along but far below them in rank -- he made statements such as

"I think there is room up there among them...".

"i also want to be number one someday - and i want to show i also have some quality".

the atmosphere - particularly in commentary and media, seemed to be ''how dare ANYONE NOMINATE himself? while roger is still at his peak? while there is the amazing rivalry of roger and rafa?"

since it was ''norm" -- even among the OTHER players that whatever roger did was just ''without peer" -- one of them - being ljubicic (who himself was dismissive of NADAL'S wins over roger as 'because he's a leftie" -- as if nadal had NO real talent that was responsible for his wins - just that he's a leftie like it was some kind of unfair advantage) ...

and THEN nole comes along and DARES to say HE too believes he could challenge THEM?

who was this nobody from ''some eastern slavic country that nobody knows where it is on the map?"

i really didn't like that - and i quarreled with plenty in some websites and got banned for it, LOL!

but again -- just look at him. not JUST one of the greatest -- but ALSO , as a sports figure -- an extraordinarily ARTICULATE person in MANY areas of life , cultured and without airs, really.

proud but without that over-indulgence about his historic achievements. so -- how can one not admire that?

I try not to do that because all of these players work hard all of their lives to get to this point, but it’s hard not to do it when there are so many trolls around who insist on disparaging other players in favor of their personal preferences.

but for me what is not nice among players is when THEY disparage each other (i mean it is one thing to use critical faculties - as opposed to just putdowns because of some kind of jealousy or refusal to acknowledge your own ''rival" in accomplishments)

Same here. I do not respect players who talk other players down.

...and there HAVE been times when a few players were like this towards the ''upstart" Nole -- one of them was, imo, Roger himself, along with Ljubicic and any that seemed to be so friendly towards roger, they behaved almost like ''protectors" of his legacy than as rivals.

I agree completely, Roger was terrible in this regard. He was five to six years older than these guys who were new to the tour and he dogged them out consistently, Rafa, Novak, and Andy. That used to bug me so much because it was like a senior belittling incoming freshmen and getting others to do the same. I lost all respect for Roger at that point, because I can’t imagine why anyone would do something that heinous. Look at it now with Rafa, Novak and Andy being on the tour with upstarts like Thiem, Zverev, Kyrgios, etc. They have not spoken one cruel word about those guys. It just shows you the difference in class.

..and nole had to bear that kind of atmosphere from what i observed over the early years. and that's partly what i mean by how well Nole carried himself.

This is true. No argument from me. Rafa and Andy had to as well.

as he has proven himself in ways that VINDICATED his EARLY statements that triggered those disparaging or dismissive remarks about his ''ambition" .

Exactly. He had a right to say those things; others have said worse. But Toni Nadal said from the beginning that they were more concerned with Novak’s game years ago, and so was I.

Spot on!

So true, that’s when they came up with that BS Nadal’s game was “too physical” as opposed to Federer’s “free flowing” game. Anything to disparage the other guys. Novak was delicate and couldn't finish a match. And Andy whined too much, but not a peep about Federer constantly belittling the threats to his "supremacy." News flash, the game is PHYSICAL and everyone who plays is physical as evidenced by the injuries on the tour. It looks like Nole was right, so eat that, huh?

who was this nobody from ''some eastern slavic country that nobody knows where it is on the map?" i really didn't like that - and i quarreled with plenty in some websites and got banned for it, LOL! but again -- just look at him. not JUST one of the greatest -- but ALSO , as a sports figure -- an extraordinarily ARTICULATE person in MANY areas of life , cultured and without airs, really. proud but without that over-indulgence about his historic achievements. so -- how can one not admire that?

I quarreled with them too on Talk Tennis regarding Novak. Even though Rafa's my favorite, let’s not lie on Novak or anyone else. Novak has always been a great player, that’s indisputable, it just took him some time to get it together. No one was defending Novak at the time, but now he has many “fans” once he started winning. I do think the commentators were premature in crowning him and the only knock that I have against Novak is that he was always this talented and should’ve been in the mix with Rafa and Roger a long time ago. For me it's not the same since Rafa and Roger battled it out for over a decade while the rest just cruised on the tour. IMO, this is the only knock on Novak is that he had the talent all along and wasn’t challenging the duopoly.

Anyway, I loved your post and am so glad to see that someone else felt the same way about how Roger treated those guys. It was despicable.

Teddy, read my post above.

THANKS much for your confirming what i recall from especially the earlier years of the 2000's ..although we all can see a lot also has changed, including the attitudes of players or how they adjust to the developments or their own careers and of those around them. and we have to incloude also Roger in his own gradual way of being much more gracious in his own losses to the best of his rivals -- such as of course, Nadal, first of all and BEFORE anyone else...and then nole and andy..and then others still.

my main focus of course - in giving these recollections is to show how well NOLE has withstood or grown into all these challenges to ''become his own" ''nole era" - just like NADAL and ROGER had their times of practically unrivaled supremacy ...and including during their battles with their best rivals -- again the very same ''BIG FOUR" we are talking about.

Nadal -- i INSTANTLY also picked as one of my ALL-time FAVS - just like Nole is now also added -- (and none of this should take away from ROGER'S greatness no matter what *I* ''prefer" -- and roger deserves the success he has had because he also worked just as hard as anyone and in a very professional, very dedicated way to become his own best and be universally admired) -

and - just like Nole -- we all are very familiar with NADAL being almost TO A FAULT -- so humble about both his victories AND his losses. people sometimes would make an issue about his saying ""i try to improve" or say that ''my forehand wasn't good enough -- my concentration wasn't good enough" during losses..BUT that IS true -- in the same way that nole or roger or andy would lose because one or other aspect of their game was not up to par...so -- they lose.

because they've each proven that at their very , very best -- it was going to ALWAYS be very , very difficult to take them down -- even against each other -- and usually

like in the days of sampras, agassi, borg, mcenroe, etc...

it's a question of very, very , very little difference, sometimes even just uncanny timing or luck or whatever it is in LIFE that we all can say is ''unfair" to us!! lol. but tha'ts how things go...u know?

but as FAR AS holding himself up against what would be discouraging , relatively LACKING embrace as a LEGITIMATE RIVAL even to nadal or roger...

i just found it amazing that NOLE managed to just PLUG RIGHT AHEAD -- keep his head down and just keep searching - practicing, getting the right teacher for this and that addition to his game -- step by step by step...

i just thought:

"wow -- the young guy has been punished by commentators, or to read or hear that he is not THAT much of a STAR as the other two -- but there he goes -- - whoever he BEATS or challenges in FO , for example, FO crowd almost pointedly shows HIM he is NOT AS welcome as the others..."

if that was anyone else -- to experience that kind of ''coldness" more or less -- so that HIS ''team" or ''crowd" is often screaming louder JUST to be heard against the FAR, bigger crowd for someone else - like roger or nadal or anyone ELSE BUT nole...until they acknowledge that he won ...but not really WHILE he was TRYING to win ...

that someone would already have made many tantrums...

remember how his LOSS last year at the FO? because the FO crowd KNEW that nole had shown his presence for years as a legitimate future champ - but just couldn't QUITE break the nadal, roger ''finals" duo -- or if he arrived at finals just couldn't get it still last year --

what did we see ? that after HE was given 'Some love" --which he richly deserved even as a losing finalist to the GREAT ONE RAFA..(WHO has been so amazing despite what we clearly could sense his body showing the wear and tear already) -

NOLE gave the crowd BACK EVEN greater love...

he didn't behave in his great Career slam victory as if "i deserve this love" -- but instead he showed GRATITUDE to the FO crowd that HAD denied him that love for so long. ..when they finally helped ''carry" him to his final and then in his victory.

that -- TO ME -- spoke much of what a dignified person this Nole really is.

he didn't behave in his great Career slam victory as if "i deserve this love" -- but instead he showed GRATITUDE to the FO crowd that HAD denied him that love for so long. ..when they finally helped ''carry" him to his final and then in his victory.

that -- TO ME -- spoke much of what a dignified person this Nole really is.

Another great post. I am a tennis fan, not a tennis fanatic. Unlike many others I don't care about titles, GOATs, and statistics. I watch tennis purely for what it gives me. I like to see players compete and be respectful. That's it.

A lot changed because the youngsters were growing up and coming into their own, and you can't keep saying people aren't that great when they're gaining on you. It's pretty simple.

I do think the establishment treated those younger guys horrifically. I don't know who they treated the worst, Rafa or Novak, but neither one of them deserved it.

Great points about Novak plugging ahead and doing what he had to do. That's the position they were all in. I have mass respect for all of those guys and their respective times, but this is sport and jealously holding onto your favorites achievements just seems petty to me. I've enjoyed your posts and respect your opinions as they are balanced, forthright and true.

i don;'t want to miss out saying that -- it is of course very disappointing to see how difficult the past many , many months now has been for RAFA...

it's clear that the physical aspects have caught up with him - BUT let us NOT forget this guy -- ANOTHER of the ALL-TIME greats right at the very top of the game --

and , even , in many ways probably the most important of his generation because of how he BROKE so many barriers (i mean -- WIMBLEDON? OVER THE GREAT ROGER? AT THE HEIGHT of roger's career? -- the career slam? the DOUBLE CROWN of wimbledon and FO? - 2 SEPARATE YEARS? -- WHO DOES THAT?!) -

but ALSO because he was not just the FIRST but right deep into the height of rog'ers dominance showed a RIVALRY that WAS NOT supposed to happen against roger by ANYONE and that alone was a DOOR that nadal showed everyone else..."i don't have roger's great , beautiful game, no? but...i can FIGHT, NO?"

so it is of course disheartening to see nadal struggling right now .

BUT -- we HAVE gotten so SPOILED - BECAUSE of his years of dominance , just like people have gotten so spoiled to see such amazing tennis from roger also -- we all expect NO LESS from others AND from these great ones...

BUT they ARE human beings. they are individuals - with such athletic talent and competitive abilities who reach the pinnacle of achievement in their sport that so FEW could even dream of -- and we can't TRULY experience even -- as well as understand just what a TOLL on their bodies and mentalities and spirit it all takes.

this is one reason why i NEVER dismiss a player unless he was practically on a wheelchair -- if that player feels he has something MORE to give to his sport.

that's the way i look at nadal also. he probably really needs to ''heal" in so many ways (loss of confidence, bodily, spiritually, in his profession, the constant disappointments lately )

and find the space to be FRESH for next year. in his own way as it is for , say, roger, and even in HIS own way, Nole...just like every other player.

but we know the LEVELS of accomplishments in HISTORY that nadal, nole, roger, andy Have reached -- and THAT'S tough to not just put together but MAINTAIN it year, after year after year.

and NADAL - HAS been at the very pinnacle levels of tennis SINCE HE WAS JUST A 17 YEAR OLD, FOR goodness sake!

lots of others at THAT level to last even 5 years with such consistency!! - would be in the hospital already! lol.

I think that Rafa is blessed in something very important and that's his humility. He knows how to roll with the punches in life, and when you see him, he's still enjoying life, not worrying about Novak or Roger. The world tries to make us think that we have to be at the pinnacle in order to define success, but I disagree. I think that Rafa has had an astounding career and I am thankful for the many years of top notch tennis that I was privileged to witness.

At some point you have to find contentment and that's what Rafa has done, but he's also enjoyed life which is most important. You can see how happy and well-adjusted he is mentally and emotionally. I applaud that.

The most important things in life are family and friends; everything else are fringe benefits. Records are meant to be broken sooner or later. Once Michael Jordan hung his shoes up, he has to be okay with what happens. People who argue about who is the greatest practice futility. None of what we say affects these guys lives, so people need to quit and grow up. Respect everyone's achievements or quit watching the game and trying to irritate others, LOL.

Here's the Slavic branches lesson for Teddy - Eastern: Russians, Belorussians and Ukrainians; Western: Poles, Czechs and Slovaks Southern: former Yugoslavs & Bulgarians. So Serbs are not Eastern but South Slavs.

THANK YOU for educating me! i love learning about these things - i was just generalizing about ''slavics as eastern" -- in relation to ''western'' europe of the anglo-celtic-norman-frankian-scandinavian-nordic groups...

who are also generally under the ''protestant/catholic/evangelical" kind of ''christianity". -- as opposed to the more broadly orthodox christian ''east" of the slavic peoples..(although I know that poland and slovakia, also czechs are more catholic) .

oh -- once more -- CONGRATS to NOLE for his 30th masters just as he is nearing his 30th birthday//isn't that amazing/\ ?

so true. i think it was quite a lot to give in his successful effort to win the AO and have a GREAT clay court season and finally become one of the few in history to have a career slam . and at their level, even the slightest dip in mental energy - which probably was the case in wimbledon - can be very critical...

but already - it's another amazing year for him, no matter what.

is Cincinnati one of, or only one , he has not yet won? so many he won i;ve lost track.
!!

but if so -- i think it's not such a ''hole'' in one's resume considering where he is now -- among the all-time greats for sure.

I have my own opinion of tennis in the Olympics, but it's his choice to go there. If he wins the gold, I can't see him making a big push for Cinci.
If he doesn't win, one would think he'd focus his energies on winning the U.S. Open.

i think you are right about that.

we've all watched this amazing sport for so long across the generations that we all know it must be a very, very demanding schedule and takes just about every ounce of energy from the athletes.

i can't imagine that NOLE would want to jeopardize his USO 'energy level" - by engaging in cinci after the olympics - especially IF he even wins it or reaches the semis or finals. that's really a lot of playing - plus all the psychological demands of being with the national team and the occasion itself.

cinci - between olympics and the USO would simply not stand up as a priority, imo. ..unless - whatever the rio results -- nole considers cinci important to build a momentum to USO - but then again - an olympics run is already A LOT of momentum anyway. at the very least - a lot of ''practicing" .

Teddy, read my post above.

thanks , Tennis Fan for yhour posts.

i am now wondering how RAFA is coming along in his preparations and for RIO ? it's a great thing to know that he's committed since we know that with his recent big setbacks - he himself has admitted that some of his entries to certain tournaments were ''too soon" . and if he commits to such an important event - that gives hope actually - because it could mean he IS feeling physically very close to ''fresh" and ready to battle it out to the hilt.

for me , anyway -- from the way i see rafa as a professional and champion . he doesn't do things ''half-way" - and doing things AT ALL - in his sport - means ''to the hilt" when it comes to rafa. and THAT means - to commit to rio could indicate he is feeling GOOD physically and even eager.

and that's the rafa we miss!

come on RAFA! TENNIS needs you -- and your great rivals NEED you . you've been missed at your best!
