Is that really fair? Big hitting kid with nothing to lose. Fed is also aging and looked it today. Rafa faced a real comer, and Roger could barely beat a guy he's owned.
It's completely fair. Big hitting kid is allowed to hit big and connect because older opponent plays safe and 10 ft behind the baseline. What's not to understand? It's not like this is a newfound strategy. Nadal has lost many matches with this exact game plan. As his fan, you know this better than I do.

Whoa! I just saw that Nadal lost to the 18 year-old Canadian kid. There goes those pesky hard courts tripping him up again. If only they'd put a layer of red dirt on top of the damned things... Guess he'll have to wait until Cinci to try to get to #1.

At this point it's looking like a Federer vs. Zverev final. Roger didn't play that great today...but it was Ferrer so it's not like he was really ever in danger of losing... Somewhere in Sweden Robin Soderling is going, "Damn, David...at least I won 1 match in 17 tries before I retired..."

Apparently all you have to do is go big or stay home and you can take out aging Nadal. Fed will take over #1 now.

This is essentially the "strategy" of the entire WTA Tour - hit big or go home. What are - maybe 5-6 top women players who don't play that big hitting "style?"

Also, Roger can't get to #1 by winning Montreal. He can only get there if he wins Montreal and Nadal loses before the QF in Cincy and he makes the semis or better. Apparently Murray's already pulled out of Cincy so he'll drop to #3 because he had 600 points to defend.

I wasn't saying Fed would take over #1 this tournament, but in general he will take it.

The kid did it. #1 waits for the next tournament. Bloody hell.

Wonder if Nadal had a Miami 2004 flashback when he was brash 17 year-old taking on the world #1 and defeating him out of nowhere? Kind of ironic really...and the fact that the kid's a lefty with a one-handed backhand? Saw the highlights...doesn't look like Nadal handled the lefty spins and angles that well. More irony.

BTW - let's hear it for the one-handed backhand. Nice to see they're still teaching that to little kids. Arguably the 3 greatest players of all time all have single-handed backhands and yet all the coaches, analysts and experts steer kids towards 2 hands for the control.

Bout time! I've been looking for the next wave to form! Sasha barely got through, but did unlike my other fave 1 handed BH'r, Theim! MP's not enough I guess! I thought this kid would spray the ball when it counted in that TB! I'm pleasantly surprised he's moved on! Roger better watch out tomorrow! Down to 3 seeds out of the 8! :ptennis:

Fair enough, and well-spanked. I will say I think he had a bit of an off-day, as Roger did. If he'd been feeling his shots more, he would have won. He wasn't just too cautious, he was making too many UFEs which is unlike him, and you can't attribute them all to the kid. However, I'm perfectly willing to blame him for the loss. The kid was brave, but Rafa held all the hole cards and shouldn't have lost one this close against an 18-year-old.

I watched the Fed match today from beginning to end. It was really ugly match with some occasional good shots strewn in. But, the mark of a champion is to find a way to win the match even when your A and B game is not working. Today Fed played his C game and yet managed to win.

Fed was muttering couple of times. Also, on other occasion there was audible obscenity in Swiss-German. To cap it, once he also hit the ball in anger (and I think got a warning too).

Fed is in Montreal without his family. Apparently he attended cold play concerts for two days in a row.

Anyway, whatever does not kill you, makes you stronger.

Fed should wake up now and realize that there is almost literally nobody worthy of their name left in the draw except for Sasha. This is a great opportunity that he should not miss to win a title in a previously unconquered tourney.

Well, that's assuming that he continues to win - and as he said, sooner or later the "dream run" is going to come to an end. The thing that's in his favor is Murray and Djokovic are hurt - and hard courts really are NOT Nadal's thing and never have been. I was watching some of the Shapovalov match and noticed the kid was using a lot of the same plays and tactics that Roger has used this year to beat Nadal - aggressive from the baseline, sometimes inside the baseline, i/o forehands into Nadal's forehand corner, backhand's cross court and then down the line. It's like Roger has given everyone a template for how to beat Nadal on a hard court - IF you've got the game and can execute it.

Are you trying to start a rumor that Fed has marital issues or something? Sheesh. It's already been stated his family will be in Cincy as they usually are. He played Stuttgart and Halle without them there as well. He does the Shanghai trip without them, too, and has for the last 5-6 years. Are you going to start a rumor about that too in Oct?

Also, a bunch of the players went to the Cold Play concert. Apparently it was arranged by the tourney organizers. Are you going to crap on them, too or do they get a pass because they're not Roger Federer? He's allowed to have crappy matches after long lay-offs. He DID just turn 36, you know. Not every match is going to be a gem of precision - and that was the case even in his prime. He was clearly struggling with his game and the other day he was talking about how windy it is on that court. And let's not forget - he was playing Ferrer. He'd find a way to beat Ferrer even if he left his rackets in the locker room. No offense to David...who I really like...but...let's get real. He has no weapons to hurt Federer with. The only times he even wins a set is when Roger is struggling with his game and playing crappy.

That was nothing to do with age Moxie. Why always bring Federer into Rafa's stumbles? It seemed clear to me that Roger was still adjusting his grass legs to hard court tennis. Didn't watch the Rafa match, I was shocked, but pls let's try to deal with these things without trying to impose some sort of Fedal nuance

Nadal is basically a second tier player off clay, and if I am being generous. What the hell is he doing?
Watch him go have a 5-5 win loss record until the end of the season...

What do I have to do with it? I don't bring up Rafa comparisons every time Fed has had a bad loss in his career.

Most recent example? "Always a terrible day when Whafa returns to #1. DP's and Raonic's weak asses made a hard draw into a cakewalk yesterday." Or calling him "the evil one." You're nasty about him all the time. Then I get called defensive. Reason for all this bile? #becauseFederer. And don't make me laugh by claiming otherwise.

And what's that have to do with the "yeah my guy lost to an 18 year old wildcard but did you see Federer struggle in a win today" type of post?
