It's completely fair. Big hitting kid is allowed to hit big and connect because older opponent plays safe and 10 ft behind the baseline. What's not to understand? It's not like this is a newfound strategy. Nadal has lost many matches with this exact game plan. As his fan, you know this better than I do.Is that really fair? Big hitting kid with nothing to lose. Fed is also aging and looked it today. Rafa faced a real comer, and Roger could barely beat a guy he's owned.
Apparently all you have to do is go big or stay home and you can take out aging Nadal. Fed will take over #1 now.
I wasn't saying Fed would take over #1 this tournament, but in general he will take it.This is essentially the "strategy" of the entire WTA Tour - hit big or go home. What are - maybe 5-6 top women players who don't play that big hitting "style?"
Also, Roger can't get to #1 by winning Montreal. He can only get there if he wins Montreal and Nadal loses before the QF in Cincy and he makes the semis or better. Apparently Murray's already pulled out of Cincy so he'll drop to #3 because he had 600 points to defend.
The kid did it. #1 waits for the next tournament. Bloody hell.
Wonder if Nadal had a Miami 2004 flashback when he was brash 17 year-old taking on the world #1 and defeating him out of nowhere? Kind of ironic really...and the fact that the kid's a lefty with a one-handed backhand? Saw the highlights...doesn't look like Nadal handled the lefty spins and angles that well. More irony.
BTW - let's hear it for the one-handed backhand. Nice to see they're still teaching that to little kids. Arguably the 3 greatest players of all time all have single-handed backhands and yet all the coaches, analysts and experts steer kids towards 2 hands for the control.
Fair enough, and well-spanked. I will say I think he had a bit of an off-day, as Roger did. If he'd been feeling his shots more, he would have won. He wasn't just too cautious, he was making too many UFEs which is unlike him, and you can't attribute them all to the kid. However, I'm perfectly willing to blame him for the loss. The kid was brave, but Rafa held all the hole cards and shouldn't have lost one this close against an 18-year-old.It's completely fair. I watched the Fed match today from beginning to end. It was really ugly match with some occasional good shots strewn in. But, the mark of a champion is to find a way to win the match even when your A and B game is not working. Today Fed played his C game and yet managed to win.
Fed was muttering couple of times. Also, on other occasion there was audible obscenity in Swiss-German. To cap it, once he also hit the ball in anger (and I think got a warning too).
Fed is in Montreal without his family. Apparently he attended cold play concerts for two days in a row.
Anyway, whatever does not kill you, makes you stronger.
Fed should wake up now and realize that there is almost literally nobody worthy of their name left in the draw except for Sasha. This is a great opportunity that he should not miss to win a title in a previously unconquered tourney.

That was nothing to do with age Moxie. Why always bring Federer into Rafa's stumbles? It seemed clear to me that Roger was still adjusting his grass legs to hard court tennis. Didn't watch the Rafa match, I was shocked, but pls let's try to deal with these things without trying to impose some sort of Fedal nuance :whistle:Is that really fair?
