his confidence may be at an all time low. we will just have to see if he can reverse the trend.

shanghai is not going to be easy. all the sharks will be there.

maybe he should have taken a wildcard in france this week and get some traction and momentum going.

Did Rafa threaten to go to Basel? I warned you guys, I'm a fan, but it had to happen sooner or later! Roger's losin' it and there's not a lot he can do but regroup for next season; if there is a next season! It's only going to start getting harder and harder just to stay in a tourney; eso. if on clay! Why he continues that grueling schedule on dirt, I'll never understand! Even Lendl skipped FO a couple times late in his career! Roger has the record for consecutive majors! It might be time to just let AO and FO alone! It just isn't worth it! If he feels like making that trip to Australia, fine, but the French Open isn't feasible anymore! Anyone?

agreed. he will only get killed at RG.

why not spend the extra time on grass and get some traction going for Wimbledon.

he can always practice on the red clay on his own to fine tune his ground game.

time has come indeed to skip RG.

its interesting to note that serena--roughly his age--is absolutely decimating the field.

tommy has is pushing 36 and he is about to get into top 10.

a 40 year old just won the u.s. open doubles championship.

so there is plenty of inspiration to be had.

There's inspiration, then there's delusion! :snigger So what that Haas is hitting top 10? He still hasn't won anything of consequence! He's had plenty of rest over the years as well with injuries, surgery, and Heaven knows what else! No matter how much training and rest, Roger's played more than any of the other top players, never missing a major, usually winning while Nole, Rafa, and Andy have had plenty of time away from play! I hope he can regroup for next season and have a good run at a major, but I'm not hopeful! Those early exits this year have not been impressive! His ranking has to go down even further; sorry!

Why are you obsessed with players needing to skip slams? Of all the tournaments Roger can skip, you choose Roland Garros? Makes zero sense, and I don't understand why many here always feel the need for drastic measures.

Be patient! Next they'll be amputating limbs and putting players in cryogenic fridges. Skipping slams and taking months off tour is only the start...

Funny thing is, I really believe Roger's best chance at a slam CAN come at RG, in a scenario where Nole takes out Rafa on one side, and I am positive even today Roger can take out Murray on clay...and then it comes down to one match on clay, way better than meeting Nole on slow hards for my money. Too many ifs obviously...:snigger

Why would you think Nole can take out Rafa at RG?

You are on the right path here but it isn't RG he should skip as that's really the only one that matters. I much rather see Roger just play Madrid and RG. He has no prayer on clay at this point but he can't completely take the whole clay season off. And doing just Madrid and RG assures he won't have played THAT much before Wimbledon. When you squeeze Rome and Halle in there it becomes way too much tennis at his age and most played on a surface he has no hope to win another slam on.

Five setter played this year in which Novak led in the fifth suggests he "can," yes. Stating otherwise is a bit delusional.

Delusional? You sure? I tend to think that giving a guy a win he didn't get is actually delusional...

He's getting closer to beating him there. That match could've easily ended up with Novak winning. Remember how Nadal edged closer to beating Fed at Wimbledon in 2007 and then won in 2008. Well, draw a parallel here. Novak's been poor in finals this year and even playing subpar made it to 7-9 in the 5th, while leading 4-2 serving for 5-2. I'd say it's delusional to not assume he'll get the better of Nadal there at some stage.

N

NADAL2005RG

Nadal was limping during the clay season, and looked faster during the US summer. So I think the first half of 2013 was Djokovic's chance to win Roland Garros. I think Nadal will be a lot sharper in 2014 (and WAY more confident).

Nadal took seven months off and still almost dispatched Nole in 4! I think Nole did well to get to five, but that might be the best shot he has. I think next time it's more likely back to a four sets win for Rafa, than a defeat.

Either way, it's ridiculous to say it's delusional to think that the greatest clay court player would never lose against a guy he's beaten 5 times out of 5 in Paris....

A lot can change between now and May/June so we'll see. Novak's been poor in all the big moments this year in slam finals and has surely got a point to prove to try and redeem himself next year. The 3rd set at the US Open was the final nail in the coffin for him and I hope he wakes from his slumber. I'd love to have seen what would have entailed had he won that set but we'll never know. There are many examples of players with time off coming back and playing well. Look at Clijsters. And he almost won in 4 doesn't count. Fed almost beat Novak in 2 US opens with 2 mps in the 5th in that case :p Unless you do it, it doesn't count. I was merely backing up Broken's post that of course Novak has shown he can win at RG against Nadal. Whether he will remains to be seen.
