Rafa is not making things easier for himself. Up a break 2 times and then allowed to be broken as many times to even the things at 3 in set #2.

Nothing surprises me by Rafa anymore besides that I can imagine the surface probably is now like a big puddle o_O

You are welcome, Carol.

Can't believe all this rain. @mrzz is this normal?

I do not know Rio that well, but the southwest of Brazil can see a full week of rainy days sometimes, so it could be worst...

I took a look at the weather forecast for the next couple of days, risk of thunderstorms Wednesday, Thursday and Friday. Boy I hope they are wrong.

Rafa wins his 1st match.

Sorry, I mean "southeast of Brazil". Cardinal directions in another language can trick you...

Sad to know about the weather. I'll be in town on thursday, at least I can give weather reports (as I am pessimistic about tickets).

And our meteorologists are good... unfortunately.

Mrzz, forgot to tell you, I looked it up on my weather website. There is a chance that they make a mistake. According to them it should have been 0 here yesterday, but it was -10 C so.....

We'll see I guess. Maybe there will be tickets available due to weather situation. Once I got a really good semi final tickets for Rogers Cup few hours before the match, as apparently some people retuned them.

At least you have Sao Paulo tournament next week. :)

I didn't watch the match, but this is Rafa's new trope. Well, a win is a win. We'll keep hope alive.

I just watched the match. He got the job done, but he can't keep going toe-to-toe with the likes of a Careño Busta. He's never going to beat Djokovic like this. He must serve better, and he must shorten points.

I didn't watch the whole match but based on the highlights, he's dropping a lot of stuff short and get punished for it.

I just noticed that Monaco retired in the first set yesterday. Not a good sign from a guy who has been out for 7 months with injury.

Tsonga has lost against Monteiro, tennis is right now as crazy as the weather around the world

Weather badly affected play at Rio...

Thiago Monteiro, Brazil, def. Jo-Wilfried Tsonga (3), France, 6-3, 3-6, 6-4.

Second Round
Daniel Gimeno-Traver, Spain, def. Fabio Fognini (7), Italy, 4-6, 3-1, retired.
Dominic Thiem (5), Austria, def. Diego Schwartzman, Argentina, 7-5, 7-5.

Tsonga's loss was the biggest surprise of the day... but Fog also retired mid-way during set 2.

Guga Kuerten was one of the most charming players. And one of the great champions at Roland Garros. Who can forget this?

Monteiro got the biggest home town boost. And what's up with Fognini?

Lower back problems for F3, I came home at the end of Dominic's match and that's what the commies said.

This was Monteiro's first ATP match and he delivered.

Nice recognition of Guga's achievements, so deserving of the honor.:good:
