The Djokovic vs. Hurkacz match will be 1st on Thursday at 2:30 pm local time. Which means that if Hurkacz wins a set, Sinner will be in the SF even before playing Rune. In addition, if Hurkacz does win a set, then Sinner needs to win his match against Rune if Djokovic wants to advance to the SF.

For Sinner, I have a feeling that he will try to win the 1st set no matter what happens in the Djokovic/Hurkacz match just to keep his momentum going. Then, by 2nd set and on, he will probably try to conserve some energy for SF.

The guy on Tennis Channel says, "This is the first time Rublev is playing Alcaraz, and, turns out, it's not as much fun as he had hoped." :face-with-tears-of-joy:

It's a great win, but I'm more interested in seeing how he follows it up. I've seen too many times, by Zverev, Medvedev, and several others, where they get a big win like this, only to lay an egg in the next match.
Just a fact for you,
Sinner is the only player to have beaten Novak, Alcaraz and Medvedev this year
He has beaten Alcaraz and Medvedev twice each in 2023 not bad for someone you claimed to be 'over rated' :)

Impressive win by Sinner, he rose to the occasion and delivered in last set TB. He is upping the gears as we speak. This very fast surface suits him too.

So as it stands now, Novak needs to win against Hubi in 2 sets in order not to worry about the outcome of Rune-Sinner match. It's hard to see Rune demolish Sinner and somehow go through on games percentage. Novak's chances do go down if he plays 3 sets against Hubi. This round robin stuff is quite interesting.

I found this for a green group outcomes:

Don,
Thanks Sinner to me was clutch in moments that mattered, and he didnt go away after losing the 2nd set TB, he has really improved in the last couple of months, serve. tactics and also his physcial abillity, winning matches that go over 3 hours at this event and also in the final in Vienna is a testament to that fact.

Just finished watching the high lights of Alcaraz v Rublev match, as I was on shift work at the hospital,
Charly said he played his best match in months to beat Rublev 75 62
Well done young man and I think you will be having a rematch of the match at the USO against Meddy, not counting my chickens before they hatch :)

Someone can correct me if I am wrong, with Rublev's elimination today from the finals, it secures year end No 4 ranking for Sinner regardless of how the rest of the YEC plays out, meaning he will be seeded No 4 for AO in 2024.

Haven't watched any of it but given Alcaraz is moaning about this being the fastest court of the year, I'm thinking Medvedev will win. I like Alcaraz but moaning that you can't play on fast indoor hard courts is lame. He needs to man up and realize it's about the only diversity in the otherwise slow surface year. He said it himself the other hard courts are so, so slow. Learn to play on fast courts and quit moaning. Lame.

Holy hyperbole, Batman! I don't think he was "moaning," just commenting, with maybe a tiny touch of complaint.

Goodness , i get back home from traveling abroad just to find the ATP finals embroiled in dejah vuh Round robin messiness, LOL. The format is what it is, which going back to the Connors/Borg/Lendl days in the YE Grand Prix Masters (same format) has elicited “unfair” exclusions.

As inherently flawed as RR can be, its a viable way to get a full week of “real tournament” play with only 8 players. So no matter the tie breaker used, bumping someone when 3 players have identical W-L records sucks.

As much as Tsitsipas is not my fave, I am forced to defend him a bit here. IMO playing and then retiring after only 3 games wasn’t some planned or wimpy action.

Wasn’t it just 2022 Indian Wells that Taylor Fritz curtailed his practice session due to injury and his own team advised him not to play the finals versus Nadal? Fritz on a hope and a prayer wanted to give it a shot, the adrenaline kicked in and well we know how that turned out. So I can’t fault Stefano for attempting to play, and as Rune rightly pointed out, only the player knows how the body will respond at that moment. The 3 games played result was unfortunate, but again, injuries. : (

Plus Stefano saying this tournament meant more to him than any other? Well yeah, emotionally that makes sense because the ATP YE finals remains the biggest win ever of Stefano’s career. Of course your “first” has a special place in your heart.
The sky is falling as I’m now the Tsitsipas pro bono defender, LOL.

For some reason, Rublev kind of reminds me of Berdych. Booming power, somewhat one-dimensional game (and I think Berdych had more dimensions). A guy who seems to always be around, but not win Slams.

For whatever reason, Berdych went deeper in Slams: he reached a final and 6 other semifinals, along with 10 other quarterfinals. Rublev, on the other hand, has never made it past the quarterfinals (9 times, including 5 out of the last 6 Slams he's played in). Not sure what is, but he can't get past that QF hump...yet.

One thing to note is that Rublev just turned 26, so 2023 was basically his age 25 season. Berdych turned 26 in late 2011, so that would be the equivalent, age-wise. At that point, Berdych had one F, 1 SF, and 2 QF...meaning only 4 times to the QF vs. Rublev's 9 times. But Berdych didn't really reach his peak form until around the same age as Rublev over the last year or two, and was solidly good into his early 30s with lots of SF chances after Rublev's current age. I expect that he'll have some SF appearances, and maybe a Final or two. But he's definitely pretty much the definition of "second tier" player at this point - ala Berdych and Tsonga.

I don't understand why some people think what Rublev is doing is OKAY and even laugh about it. Yeah when he wins or when he's off the court he's all smiles and "adorable", but what he does on the court is literally PATHETIC PSYCHO BEHAVIOUR and to do it in front of children watching our sport is just unacceptable. He needs some help fast, I have zero respect for him and would never be a fan of someone like that.

As someone who works in a casino, as they say, the real personality of people show up not when they win but when they lose. Most are still super nice and polite even when they lose, but some become rude, angry, disrespectful, and sorry Rublev falls clearly in that category. Not saying that he's the worse person ever because of it, but he seriously needs some help and it's not a laughing matter at all. Imagine what he can do behind closed doors if he can't control his temper with so much violence in public.

This kind of behaviour is unacceptable in our sport, especially with children watching. Djokovic is guilty of that too, and the only reason why he does it less in the last couple of years is not because he finally grew up but simply because he rarely lost.
