Yes, but the #1 comes from points. Yes, Fed guaranteed it to him today, but it wasn't the only way to get it.

I used to bet a lot and have a good idea of when Federer is going to lose and when he's likely to beat Djokovic or Nadal and just other matches in general. I’m curious if Nadal will withdraw. What motivation could he have to play now on this surface that he doesn’t like? His chance of winning the trophy isn’t good. He may want to save himself for AO.

Looks like Djoke’s arm is injured again. Maybe he’ll have surgery over winter break??

I'd be really surprised if he does. None of these elite guys got where they are by not fancying their chances. (Roger skipping clay season to save himself for Wimbledon was a different story.) He'll play tomorrow to see if he can keep his chances alive, but it's going to be down to Medvedev, even if he beats Stefanos. If he does get through, at least Djokovic is out. Much more likely he'll skip DC to save himself for the AO...which is 2 months away.

As to Novak's arm/elbow, I thought it looked like it was troubling him, too. @Bonaca thinks it was just mental...maybe pressure for the #1. And Federer's excellent play, obviously. But we won't know about that for a while, I guess.

EDIT: Apparently, Novak said he felt a sharp pain in the elbow, but didn't blame the loss on it. Looks like he said he won't got to Madrid next week for DC, though.
