But what happens if Nadal and Tsitsipas both win?

Then it comes down to sets won and loss and a lot of scenarios

Basically it will be like this if Nadal and Tsitsipas win tomorrow:

Tsitsipas: 2-0
Zverev: 1-1
Nadal: 1-1
Medvedev: 0-2

In the above scenario: Nadal has to win against Tsitsipas AND Medvedev has to beat Zverev in order for Nadal to reach the SF

The other funny thing is that Fed fans kind of have to root for Rafa for once. And by "once," I mean once. At least we root for Roger sometimes. B-)

What are you talking about? Once Fed beats Novak, Rafa gets #1 as a byproduct. Rafa does not need to lift a finger. What is there to root for?

YE #1 will be pretty much Fed's wedding gift to Ralph.

Ok, if you like, I'll pretend along with you that you haven't been hoping that Rafa gets the YE#1. And if Roger wins on Thursday, I'm sure Rafa will appreciate it as a wedding gift more than any fondue set he might otherwise have thought of sending.

As much as I want Federer to beat Djokovic on Thursday, I also want Nadal to play well tomorrow and Friday and actually win his matches. If he reaches the semifinals, then his chances of getting the YE#1 increases.

Rafa gets extra protection if he can win one RR match. He does not even need to advance.

He can get next level of protection only by reaching finals.

Anything less than reaching the finals, gets him exactly the same level of protection as winning one RR match does.

The thing is though that Djokovic can still win the event unless Thiem, Tsitsipas, Zverev, Medvedev and of course Federer beats him. It will be interesting finish that's for sure.

Oh sure. Novak can still become #1 if he wins and Rafa does not reach finals.

When was last year WTF decided who finishes YE #1?

Now wouldn't that be a real kick to the kidneys if Nole drops this match & Fed beats him? Rafa could go home early & RBA could play!
Just saw the result. Didn’t watch last set after Novak losing first game.
So he breaks back and was 4:1 in front in the TB and loses in the end?

Sorry, friend. I think they changed ends at 4-2 Djokovic, but then Domi won 4 points in a row. He had 2 MPs on his serve, blew one, then won the 2nd on Novak's serve. It was a pretty ballsy display from Thiem. Nearly lost his nerve (he had MPs, I think before the TB,) but then prevailed. Wondering how much the pressure of #1 is weighing on Novak. EDIT: Thiem broke Novak at 5-5 and served for it, but got broken back. It was a really tight end to the match.

I know you've said you don't like Thiem, but he has fully stepped up to the plate for this tournament, beating Federer and then Djokovic. He had to walk a tightrope the whole match of keeping his nerve to play fully aggressive tennis, and he didn't back down. It was the match of the tournament, though I would include Tsitsipas d. Medevdev. Very high level. Personally, I hope Rafa takes a lesson from this and decides to live or die by the sword. Go big, or go home.

Yeah can’t stand him, that makes it even more worse for me.
Still think he can reach SF, at least hoping!
Nadal can do much better when playing normal level. Very interesting match today, Daniil seems beatable, but the young guns will all be motivated as hell!

Why is it you dislike Thiem so much, today aside?

I know he is everybody’s darling. I don’t like such persons in common.
It’s from the first time I noticed him, hard to explain, nothing special.
Don’t like his game, attitude and behaviour. This is the short version.

I don't think he's anyone's darling around here. He seems to get a lot of derision around here, if I'm not wrong. Doesn't seem wholly logical to me.Maybe you'll explain more later. Let me explain one reason I DO like him. Years back, a favorite poster of ours, long gone now, but who is Austrian, brought him to our attention. He worked hard with his trainer, Gunter Bresnik, who is rather eccentric, and had him carrying logs in the woods, as one example. It took him rather a long time to break through, but I've always thought he has a great work ethic. Strong mentality and strong shoulders. Top 3 one-hander, surely. He's not the flashiest, but he's tough, and he showed that today. Also a better serve than he gets credit for, from recent posts. Everyone is welcome to dislike who they do, but I'm always curious why Thiem gets such short shrift around here.
