They stopped best of 5 at non-slams after 2006 mostly due to the Rome final.

That was probably one of the best matches, if not the best match of the current era (see Moxie, I am not biased against a match just because Ralph won). After that match, both the winner and the loser withdrew from the next tourney (I think Hamburg) and so ATP jumped on fixing the situation.

Unfortunately, they did an overkill. They made the finals three sets and gave byes to top 8 players. IMHO, they should have retained the finals as five set matches and should have given byes in the first round of the next tourney only for players who reached the finals of the previous one.

Rafa also had two barn burning 5 set matches in Masters finals in 2005. At Miami Rafa won the first two sets against Federer losing in five and then my fave, the Italian Open again with a fifth set 7-6 win over Guillermo Coria, who shined alas briefly but what a claycourt magician he was.

Best of five finals in Masters would be awesome.

On a side note; I still wish they could magically add two more weeks ( ideal would be three) to the tennis calendar and create a Grass Masters between the French and Wimbledon , making a genuine grasscourt season.

It wouldn't be awesome because sometimes masters are back to back like Madrid/Rome, Canada/Cincinnati and it would kind of suck for the finalists...

As for grass it will one day disappear, after one match the grass looks horribly worn out with bad bounces... Also the game is becoming faster and faster and grass tennis is becoming more and more a servefest… Not to mention that it's the most expensive and difficult to take care of so financially speaking they wouldn't want to add grass tournaments...

I would actually eliminate the grass season and make the tour half clay and half hardcourt, including 2 slams on each surface... Clay is the best because it allows for great tennis and rallies but isn't brutal on the feet and body like hardcourt... It would eliminate a lot of injuries on the tour...

They really need somebody very intelligent to be in charge of the ATP... Someone like Uncle Toni...

.

As GameSetandMatch suggested earlier, you give the finalists of a five set match an automatic first round bye, they could possibly not play their first match until the following Wednesday.

I read somewhere that dull is getting married. I guess now that he's only two slams behind he feels comfortable getting married.

But does dull have the talent to produce twins?

Not only the greatest player of all time but probably the nicest and most intelligent player of all time. Great answers and a true class act.

This is interesting in so many ways. Not just insight into the thinking of the team, but even, for example, that all these opponents actually do practice together. Better than the usual regurgitated same old, same old.

Tennis can be as incestuous as a kissing cousins reunion.

What a great win by Rafa today…
A 4th USO and a 19th slam title... Simply epic... He will get the all-time record :good:
He also recently defended a title on hardcourt by winning his 5th Canadian Open (and a 35th Masters 1000)...
And he's in a great position to finish the year at no.1 for the 5th time and also add more weeks at no.1
And who can forget how he won a stunning 12th RG earlier this year (beating Court's 11 AO)… :good:
What an amazing year so far for Rafa, and there's more to come!:dance3:

Rafa confirms that he will play in the Laver Cup, Bercy ATP 1000, WTF and DC. He is not sure whether he will participate in the Asian Swing at all. Looking at his wedding timeline, it looks like he will definitely miss the entire Asian Swing and the 250 & 500 indoor tourneys also.

However, given this kind of relaxing schedule and a potential mental bump due to both wedding and recent USO success, he may actually perform well in WTF this year.

Thanks for that, GSM. Funny that the headline says "...Wedding Rumors." He's getting married, that's no rumor. LOL. Spanish press says 19 Oct. It would conceivably allow him to play Beijing and Shanghai, but that would be dumb for any number of reasons, so good news he plans to skip the Asian swing, if true. (Wedding definitely conflicts with Basel.) I hope he will be fit and rested and have a good WTF this year.

Speaking of the wedding, ABC in Spain says they'll get married at Sa Fortaleza near Pollença in Mallorca.
