He had a better clay season in 2010, better hards last year.

Better grass? No contest.

As for his levels, the stuff beyond the stats, I didn't think he was convincing me on clay until the second week in Paris. Remember, he lost in Monte Carlo! Hardly a sign of him being better than 2010. First week in Paris last year, he was dodgy, and that's being kind.

On hards, he was a rock right through the summer. As I said at the time, he treated it like summer clay. But in 2010, he played the whole Wimbledon. Last year, he approached the hards with more practice and also fresher. However, there's no doubt he was better across the three summer hards last year.

I give it to 2010 because he did it across three surfaces, but what makes last yea such an incredible one was that it was so unexpected. Maybe even to him...

Nobody's saying last year wasn't incredible but I don't think it's much of a contest between 2010 and 2013. Hell, forget level of play: Ask any player which year you'd rather have, 99.9% would opt for 2010.

2010 Nadal no contest.

Clay : 2010 Nadal beat his nemesis in straights (The only players who's beaten him in RG). He also swept the clay season. 2013 Nadal lost in MC and then didn't really play his best until the closing stages of the French Open. In general Nadal's clay level has declined with time with his speed and defense declining .

Grass: 2010 Nadal played some of his best tennis on grass. His matches against Soderling and Murray were some of his best on grass. 2013 Nadal - the less said the better.

Hards: 2013 Nadal was more consistent and won everything in the North American Season. However the 2010 Nadal at the UsOpen played some of the best tennis I've ever seen him play on a hardcourt. His post UsOpen 2010 serve was the best he's ever served in his career (too bad it only lasted a quarter of a season and didn't even carry into 2011). His ROS was also much better in 2010. So while he was more consistent in 2013, I still think the 2010 Nadal would have beaten the 2013 Nadal on hard-courts in a hypothetical matchup by virtue of a better serve and ROS alone. He was much much harder to break in 2010 and he also didn't second serve ROS in the net (on a regular basis) as he did in 2013.

Even if you were to consider the hardcourts a tie, on clay and grass, Nadal in 2010 was incontrovertibly better. So overall Nadal 2010 wins. Which is not surprising because he was THREE years younger then.

Weak field both years.

What we should be talking about is whether Novak and Rog were worse in 2010 or 2013.

[split] Nadal: 2010 vs. 2013

Pity Philipp Petzschner's ranking has plummeted. Would be nice to see him in the draw all the same. He was robbed in 2010.

He wasn't robbed; he lost. Tennis isn't a judged competition.

He was downright robbed because of all the MTOs Nadal took for no apparent ailment before or after. He took one himself just to p1$$ Nadal off and give him a taste of his own medicine but he wasn't winning that match without all the blatant cheating that day. He did it the match before against Haase too when losing. He was getting battered by Petzschner's aces and forehand and he knew exactly what he needed to do to "win". You may not want to class it cheating as it's sadly within the rules but should not be but imo it was nothing but cowardice and cheating.

You admit it wasn't cheating, since it was within the rules, and yet it seems you're never going to let it go. I'll stop now, and I really hope you do, too, because I know it will go on and on if we don't, and I don't want to derail the thread. ;)

Here, here! That's one reason I've never been able to stand the guy; even when he was just a kid! He's always been like this and it will hurt his legacy regardless of where he winds up; I'll make sure of it! :nono  :nono

The last two sets in that match were 6-2 and 6-3. This is just Fedfan fantasies, because Rafa won it. Front gets these blind sides, and it's always different to how he imagines it. Rafa beat these boys fair and square and then he fist pumped towards the crowd and we all went like this:

And why were they 6-2 6-3 again? Could it be he got the desired result of killing Petzschner's momentum and concentration? Front doesn't get these anything, this was blatant to anyone but Nadal fans who defend his every action, dodgy or not. And why did he take timeouts when losing in both this match and the one before.? He took 4 (yes 4!) MTO's against Petzschner. This has nothing to do with Fed fans since Federer was playing too crap too even win against Berdych. The point is this match was the biggest example of gamesmanship I and likely other others have ever seen Nadal stoop as low as to go to. Anything to win. There are tons of threads from fans of players not named Federer saying the same thing. There was no apparent movement issue before or after and imo this Wimbledon title was a blatant result of gamesmanship and totally undeserved. He used whatever means at his disposal to win. Sure, it's within the rules but it shouldn't be and should be frowned upon. It is by a hell of a lot of people out there and you'd think maybe one MTO would be enough but he had to do it 4 freaking times.

This is the gutless aspect I talk about! Players didn't play these games like that in past generations; stalling, calling trainers, getting illegal coaching! What doesn't Rafa do to make sure he wins; always with an excuse if it does happen? Truly GUTLESS!

Hard to get over the nonsense that guy has displayed over the years I'm afraid.
