Thanks so much for all the nice messages today. Having operation on Monday. Will let everyone know how it goes. I'll be "back" stronger. Andy Murray

Berdych was the first player to send a message.
"I hope all will be fine and recover and get back soon!! take care andy.

Not sure how many twitter fans are on here but Berdych has been a twitter sensation. He seems like a very sweet, funny guy. Who knew?

Berdych has always smiled more than any player in the world, so it was fairly predictable that he'd be liked on twitter.

What?! You do know who Berdych is, right? I'm having a hard time remembering him ever smiling, nevertheless "always" and "more than any player in the world."

What do you mean?

You just showed pictures of him smiling after a win, which every other player in the world does.

When they win/lose, nobody smiles as much as Berdych. And you should have seen the display he put on after he lost the 2010 Wimbledon final. He smiled after that loss more than anyone smiles after they win.

Your use of superlatives makes it impossible to take this seriously. Not to mention your second sentence reads as if you're the only one who saw that final ("And you should have seen ...").

Andy Murray: Back surgery set to end Wimbledon champion's year

http://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/0/tennis/24163790

Andy Murray will undergo surgery on a long-standing back injury on Monday and is unlikely to play again this season.

The 26-year-old has a disc problem in his lower back and is set to miss this year's remaining tour events, including November's World Tour Finals in London.

The injury flared up in May, forcing him to withdraw from the French Open.

He returned to become first British man to win the Wimbledon singles since 1936 but struggled on the hard courts and lost in the US Open quarter-final.

The disc problem, which Murray has suffered for two years, affects a nerve in his lower back which can send pain shooting down his hip and upper leg.

It appears to cause him more problems when he plays on clay and the harder surfaces than on grass courts.

He had pain-killing injections before the 2012 French Open and withdrew from this year's Rome Masters midway through a match against Marcel Granollers. After consulting medical advice, he decided he would not be fit for Roland Garros.

There were signs of discomfort at the US Open, but he only took the decision to have surgery after last weekend's Davis Cup tie on clay in Croatia. He admitted his back was sore after last Friday's opening singles victory over Borna Coric.

Murray had been scheduled to play three more events in Asia this season, including the Shanghai Masters, then the Paris Masters before heading to the World Tour Finals at the O2 Arena from 4-11 November.

There is no suggestion that next year's schedule will be affected and it is hoped he will kick off his regular pre-season training block in Miami in the middle of November.

Sounds like he has a herniated disc

This is bad news. Back surgery is always tricky. Sorry for you Iona - it must be nerve wracking.

One hates to say it, but you're right. I'm sure he'll have the best surgeon there is. I wonder how long it takes to get back to match-fit.

Thanks Nehmeth. They are saying it's 'minor' surgery but obviously all surgery comes with a certain degree of risk. I know Andy's hoping to be fit enough to travel to Miami for his annual winter training block. I am worried and I'm gutted that I won't see him playing at the WTF but if surgery means he's fit and pain free for the new season then it will be worth it.

I would not give up Andy playing WTF right now. He has officially called off
only the three Asian Swing Tournaments right now. Everybody is calling it as
a minor surgery. I would not be surpised if he can come back for the indoor swing.
There are after all four full weeks time before the Basel/Valencia tournament.

Even if he could not recover in time for the indoor swing, he probably can
make it to WTF. That gives him six weeks time.

The good part is he does not have to worry about missing the tournaments
as he has already qualified for the WTF.

If I were Murray, I wouldn't rush it. He might take a page from the Nadal playbook, and give it a good and proper rest. As Iona says, when he gets to play pain-free, then it will have all been worth it.

Don't forget, they've moved up the WTF to early Nov. He's not going to jump up from the operating table and go onto the practice courts, no matter how minor the surgery, and I hope it is minor. This is the perfect time to do it, though. I'm not his doctor, but I'd say let the rest of the season go. That's 3+ months to get back in shape for a tune-up, then the AO. Hopefully, he's back in good shape by then.

Sorry to hear this.

Maybe this puts to rest those questioning the "possum playing" moments he's been accused of?

Hope he has a full recovery.

He may be a handful come AO...

Andy looks good. I think he will play in WTF and if he does it would be the
worst combination for Fed. Andy would neither give up his spot in the WTF, nor take out
other contenders (who are chasing Fed) from the remaining tournaments.

p.s. Of course, he is not obliged to help out Fed or anybody, I am just analyzing.

I honestly don't think Andy will be fit enough to play at the WTF.

Thanks for the update, Iona. Hopefully, he did 'win.' I agree that the WTF seems out of the question. This is a time to take the long-view.

You're welcome Moxie. I'll admit I was fretting today. I just wanted to know that the operation had went well. I agree with you and Murat that the WTF is out of the question and that he shouldn't rush his recovery. Even if he did feel able to play in November he wouldn't be match fit. Probably best he just takes his time. He should be fighting fit for 2014.

Guy needs to make sure he's perfectly healthy before coming back. Hopefully this surgery will fix his back woes.
