It's also not the rule breaker who is the victim. Rafa knows what he does, not to mention this happens pretty regularly with how they enforce it. If he doesn't want to happen, he should follow the rules.

This isn't a problem, but think of it this way: they don't pick and choose when they call "fault". They call it when it's a fault. I think the umpires should call this sooner, instead of letting it go on until the crucial part of a set. And I say this as a Rafa fan. It's a form of OCD, shaking and scratching and pulling wedgies and making faces at the camera, to get ready to serve. I have no issue with the umpire enforcing the rules, but it's not a good thing that they wait in the long grass like a sniper and decide when to fire their bullets. It's not the first time they choose a juicy moment in the drama to cough out loud and interrupt things...

Rafa gradually raised his level, was patient and smart, classic Nadal win over someone who outplayed him much of the time (most in the first set)
Definitely Thiem could be the Rafa Nadal successor on clay

Yeah, Rafa was canny and kept Thiem in close to him, where he could control the match easier. Thiem is definitely a great prospect, hopefully this year on clay he'll make a huge mark...

I agree that they should enforce from point 1, but given that everybody knows Rafa does this, and he has done absolutely nothing to conform to the rules, I like that they try to make it hurt, haha.

Sure Rafa exceeded the 25 sec time to serve the ball an he deserved a warning but that was pure gutless to give him a warning during the crucial part of the game instead of the early games.. I never liked this umpire.. such a chump he is

I love it. Rafa knows he is breaking the rules every time he steps up to the service line, and you blame the ump for when he chooses to enforce it...

I clearly state that the "chump" umpire should call it sooner.. This clown has been notorious for calling It later.. Even the commentators stated that it unfair and gutless to wait to give him a warning later. They even predicited that he would wait to do it and he did.. I know Rafa isnt your cup of tea but let's be fair about it.

In baseball, umpires are sometimes a bit more lenient with the strike zone with top pitchers and those that have a good reputation and relationship with the umpires. I'm wondering if this is the case with Rafa - he's paid his dues, is an all-time great, and the umps are just more accepting of him. It isn't fair, but is kind of how life is.

Like it was suppossed Monfils, Muzz, Roger, Wawrinka and Raonic also advancing, the next matches are going to be very interesting. I hope Tsonga will be in that group though I don't think clay is his specialty beside he is not playing his best anymore on any surface

And I see he advances too, good for him!

It would be interesting if anybody who watched the match could give a report.

No big deal for Novak, but not an ideal way to start the clay season either.

Nole's first match back on dirt and Vesely didn't allow him to play his way into form. He had to bring his A game and did not. Very similar to his loss to Wawrinka, big guy striking the ball purposefully, going for his shots and not missing much. Nole was way back, playing safe, keeping the ball in play and being forced to scamper about like a little rabbit. Pressure was on him and he was the one making dumb choices in big moments.

It should be a good reminder for him and hopefully will be more of an incentive than if he had won through. Good for me too as I have a busy rest of the week. Cheers Vesely, and well done.

These losses are bound to happen once in a while. Fans should be happy that it didnt happen in slam and I am unhappy that it didnt happen in a slam :cry:cry:cry:ras::ras::ras:

With Novak out and other BIG3+2 stay, MC is really interesting to watch.

Raonic is the most consistent player of the year. Reaching QF in every main events. :clap:clap

Granollers picked up another nice win today over one of the hottest players of the last month (Goffin). He has a great record against Monfils too, but I think Monfils will advance to face Federer. I think Raonic and Wawrinka will meet in the semis on the bottom half of the bracket, but it could very easily be Murray vs. Nadal too. It's pretty wide open at this point, but I definitely like Federer making it to the finals from the top half of the draw. Tomorrow should be a pretty entertaining day from Monte Carlo!

Finally, potential for some different results with a LL actually making the quarters! :dodgy: :p

I don't think Fed gets past Monfils who appears to finally be playing to win. I would love to see Monfils lift the trophy here and particularly at the FO. That would be a great way to end his career.

As for the umpire working the Nadal match, maybe instead of trying to throw off Nadal by calling a time violation later in the match, he was trying to help him by cutting him some slack at the beginning. If he called a violation from the first game, that might have affected Nadal more. In any case, I hope he gets his OCD under control. He could use meds when he leaves the sport.

That is why he is ranked #2 in the singles race this year, behind Novak.
Tomorrow, an eventual win over Murray could help him to hold onto that position.

Not to forget Thiem who risen through the ranks so fast, has won a couple smaller events, and beat Rafa on clay in BA! He should have won today, but something inside his head wouldn't let him taken advantage of his advantage! Break points surrounded Nadal all day, but Thiem let all but 1 get away; it was sad to see this morning! :cover  :cry

Maybe (I say maybe) Thiem could be the Rafa Nadal successor on clay but no yet, no yet.
Today he has a good/bad test after to see that his opponent has played MUCH better (70% of his best ) than the last match they played each other, it was a good clinic for him, it's obvious that he still has to learn and to improve more and more if he wants to be the best or at least close to the best in the future
