While, I've not been a supporter of Coric, his loss today was not unexpected. He just came from one final flew over to Monaco and didn't have the luxury of resting until Wednesday. Top that off with having to play a wily veteran who is very good on clay.

I am not wild about Coric. Players with his style usually develop early because their strategy is simpler. Just run for every ball, hit cc, and wait for opponents to miss. I am not surprised he broke out early and is stagnating. Top twenty is probable. Top ten maybe. But I prefer exciting players like Kyrgios, Zverev

On that note, the other finalist from morocco, Delbonis also lost to Verdasco, in an easy fashion. And Fernando has been falling through the ranks big time, now ranked 88, so this qualifies as an upset.

Doesn't say much for Verdasco; beating Nadal, then unable to survive early rounds on clay! :cover :puzzled :nono

Uh, did you really just say this? What are you, 8-years old?

Anyhow, I'm pleased with Roger's first match back after not playing for two and a half months. And unlike you, my self-esteem isn't tied up with the performance of my favorite player and I accept the fact that he isn't the player he was, but I enjoy him anyway and hope he sticks around as long as possible.

Don't start El Dude, don't start.....it's not about your self-steem, it's about how they are playing, better or worse because the age (Roger) or injuries, lack of confidence which produces anxiety (Nadal) but this last issue is easier to fix than the age, don't you think? but unlike you I don't care if Roger can still win, it doesn't affect to me at all, on the contrary my wish is that all of them would be able to play better than they do these last months (not just Rafa) and to see better competition, big difference

You know you are doing something wrong when you are pissing off el dude, literally the fairest and nicest poster.

Sorry but I don't see that I'm doing something wrong, just I do think different way he does, that's all

In my opinion tomorrow there are four interesting matches to watch and not easy to be sure who will pass to the next round
Kohls-Stan, Goffin-Verdasco, Lorenzi-Monfils, Cuevas -Raonic

So we agree on one thing, and one thing only: we both want to see better competition. I just think you're living in the past, and wishful thinking, if you think the clock will be turned back and we'll see 2013 Rafa, or even 2012 Federer...or even 2012-13 Andy. I would love to see 2012 Federer, because I think that version could actually beat Novak at Wimbledon. But I don't see it happening. The only way Roger wins another Slam is if someone takes Novak out first, or possibly if he faces a tired Novak and plays the match of his life (or later life ;)).

But the main point we disagree on is why Rafa is doing poorly. You insist upon the view that its largely mental, which also gives Rafa a better chance of figuring it out. To me this is just blatant denial.

Look, I've said numerous times that I could see Rafa making one last charge, maybe even winning another Roland Garros or at least a Masters or two. A lot of folks don't believe that is even possible and after two years of sub-par play--with no sign of him pulling out of it, except in brief moments, after which he usually falls back again--I'm starting to agree with them.

Rafa's had his downturns in his career, but they've never lasted TWO YEARS. Now if it was two years half a decade ago, then I would think he has a better chance of pulling out of it. But he's going to be 30 in a couple months. As Kieran has said, Rafa's relatively poor play can easily be explained by his age.

That said, this clay season is huge. If he's going to make a comeback, it has to happen now...or within the next two months. If he doesn't win at least a Masters, I think he's toast.

Exactly. Too big of a turnaround in too short a time.

Monte Carlo loss would be French toast, literally. Another few losses and it's Spanish omelette time back home and out fishing with uncle Phoney.

Completely wrong (one more time) a loss in MonteCarlo wouldn't mean anything, he could win the next tournament but if he would lose one after one then it would be a different story.
But probably you will see before the Swiss chocolate back home and babysitting :p

I used Monte Carlo as the only example of French toast for the masters events 'cos when do you ever see Italian or Spanish toast on a food menu? :p Mind you, he may well yet indulge in more French toast at Roland Garros :p

Federer played his first match in 2 months and a half. Considering that, he played really well. His groundies looked good to me; they were crisp. He moved well enough. He should only get better on this surface as he plays more and more matches.

Kohli fights like hell to level things at 4 all in the 2nd set then typically has his meltdown. 0-40

edit: Saves that game. Stan levels at 5-5, and Kohli loses his serve at love. :nono
