Ferrer withdraws. Zverev gets a free pass into the next round.

Zverev'll meet LL Granollers (replaces Ferru)

What in the world happened? Murray was killing it in the 1st and was coming into the net the way I've been ranting about for years and I wake up later to see he went the limit? :puzzled :nono  :cover

It doesn't make one "anti-Nadal" to think there's huge upset potential with Thiem. Or are you really Carol? ;)

Yeah, the Dirt :devil Rafa aint afraid of that young Thiem.. Vamos..

Murray is beatable. Herbert was nervous in that first set, then realized the Scot is no great shakes and beat him in the 2nd. Couple nervous points on serve in the third cost him the match. Fiero you would like Pierre's style of play... a lot.

Speaking of beatable; Federer had to serve for it twice! Does he really think he can go far going in and out like that? :cover

I like Herbert, and think his peak ranking will be higher than Pouille's. All that dubs play is great for developing an all-court game.

Good to see Kohlschrieber win. Such an intelligent player.

You have even more faith for Herbert than I do. :clap

Kohli plays a very intelligent game. It's just that he sometimes gets the yips in the big moments against the top players.

Coric beaten in the first round.... not the best to fly from the final of one tournament to play the opening round in another.

I'm starting to get a Tomic vibe from Coric: Quick into the top 100, even top 50, but then stagnant. I could see these guys having Gasquet-esque careers: Good enough to wrack up minor titles, but not good enough to compete with the top players on the big stages.

Exactly. Fans are just so hungry for some new top players, so the cheer will be very loud for any newcomer who gives hope for a while.
The hype begins and it last for sometime, until the true value starts to take form and people realize what are their real chances.
This last few days were assessing Coric current value for the time being.
First the loss to Delbonis, who has a current value of a 35-50 top player then the confirmation today with the loss to kohli, who for me is the gatekeeper to the top 30.
If someone cannot defeat or challenge Kohlschreiber, then they are not top 30 worth players for the moment.

Uh, did you really just say this? What are you, 8-years old?

Anyhow, I'm pleased with Roger's first match back after not playing for two and a half months. And unlike you, my self-esteem isn't tied up with the performance of my favorite player and I accept the fact that he isn't the player he was, but I enjoy him anyway and hope he sticks around as long as possible.

Emphasis on "for the moment." Coric will improve, he will be top 20 eventually - but anything above that is uncertain. Right now I see more of a Gasquet-Simon-Youzhny type, than even a Tsonga-Berdych-Ferrer type, but I'd also like to give him the benefit of the doubt.

To be fair to Coric and those (including myself) who get excited when a young player shows up on the radar, his ranking trajectory so far has been promising and very much in alignment with top players, although the fact that he's stuck in the 40-60 range is quite worrying. He's in danger of falling behind what I call the "pace of greatness."

I'll discuss this more in my next blog.

Anyhow, among the young players I think Kyrgios, Zverev, and Fritz have way more upside than Coric, and possibly Tiafoe, Rublev, and Kozlov.

Don't start El Dude, don't start.....it's not about your self-steem, it's about how they are playing, better or worse because the age (Roger) or injuries, lack of confidence which produces anxiety (Nadal) but this last issue is easier to fix than the age, don't you think? but unlike you I don't care if Roger can still win, it doesn't affect to me at all, on the contrary my wish is that all of them would be able to play better than they do these last months (not just Rafa) and to see better competition, big difference
