Just watched a replay of Berdych vs Federer..at match point Tomas served a body serve to Roger..Roger just casually blocked the serve to the service line ..why Berdych didn't he follow it into the net or why was he not attacking the ball..makes no sense ..this one will haunt him 4ever

This is what I've been ranting about for years; the gutless play of pros like Berdych and Ferrer who have all the ability in the world, will have multiple match points, but will always find a way to give it back to the "BIG 4!" It happens to them again and again no matter how poorly they're playing at the time! The worst example was of Deliciamo in a 3rd round match against Federer; m/b 2012 Madrid! It was one of those neck and neck contests with 3 TB's! Lopez was up 5-2 in the 3rd set TB, butchered an easy sitter overhead at the net and went on to lose it to Roger; something like 12-10! I can go on for days of example like that; NOLE a huge recipient of those chokes, owning players like Cilic, Berdych, & Ferrer! These guys are too good to have such a poor record against the elites! Even Davydenko won a couple Masters events & a YEC in their "hey day," but this era of wannabes just stress me out; NO GUTS! :puzzled :nono :cover

I hear you, Fiero, but think you both overstate the talent of the second tier players and ignore the fact that there have always been big talents who underperform because of inconsistency and mentality: Nalbandian, Safin, Pioline, Mecir, Gerulaitis, etc.

That said, it is true that the dominance of the Big Four has been historically impenetrable. For whatever reason, the Big Four have dominated in an unprecedented way; other eras saw more upsets, at least on the Masters level.

But my point is, "gutless play" is only part of the picture. There are other factors.

No matter who is on the other side, I have a feeling we will congratulate Rafa on his first ever Miami win.
I have that feeling also, but of course I'm hoping for another title for Roger ...

I think Rafa will dominate the clay season so he can let Fed have this one if he makes the final! :)

Glad it's the weekend and I can finally stay up to watch some tennis. Good that we get to witness Kyrgios v Federer since it was cancelled in Indian Wells due to Nick's retirement. Way I see it this could have a few possible scenarios:

1. Kyrgios wins a tight match as Roger has looked a bit lethargic all week since the great match he played against Del Potro. The back to back matches on consecutive days aren't great for his recovery at 35.5 years of age and he's played a lot of tennis already this year. Haven't been impressed by anything I've seen except the Del Potro match and a few key points against Berdych. Serving for the match against Berdych at 5-3 in set 3 has lost the game to 0! Horrendous. More of the same tonight and he'll lose as Kyrgios is a better player than Berdych at present imo. This and yesterday's match were/are going to be tough. Hardest draw anyone has had this tournament but that's just how it goes.

2. Federer wants to continue to show the "young guns" he's not gonna lose to them just yet and plays his best match since he did all week against Del Potro.

3. Federer scrapes through a barrage of aces and class shot making by Kyrgios but has little gas left in the tank for the final.

4. TMF returns as he wants to improve the h2h with Nadal even more and school the younger generation as long as he remains on tour. Tennis lessons usually cost money but Roger has been giving them for free most of this year :)

5. Federer gets flat out steam rolled by Kyrgios on a great serving day. Federer has served pretty badly this tournament. 5 double faults last match is more than he has in most whole tournaments so if this happens, he's toast. Of course Nick's return of serve isn't award winning stuff so if his serve is off, he won't win.

This court sucks so part of me is asking why am I actually bothering to stay up to watch it?! Bring on clay court season. Yes, clay is slower (but not much and Madrid is probably faster) than this poop but give me clay over this Miami court any day. Eager to see Federer's backhand 10.0 on clay. It's not 2.0, it's indeed more like 10.0 it's so vastly improved. The horrible bounce here though has meant Roger can't hit anywhere near as many winners as he did in Indian Wells. That court was slow this year but had a much nicer bounce than this crap.

Kyrgios has the potential to make quite some noise tonight. If he wins, which is very possible imo, he has the opportunity to not only win his first Masters 1000 (which would be quite a feat in itself), but he'll have the chance to do it in style by beating Federer and Nadal back to back. Not really too concerned about the outcome to be honest as I like Kyrgios and it's high time we see him win something big. Even reaching the final year would be massive for him and tennis. Whatever the result, I hope he continues to have a great season.

Good game from Kyrgios. Gets the break... Nice mix of aggressive tennis and maturity on some of the longer rallies.

Federer's been in all his service games so it's only a mater of time before he breaks back.
