I dislike Fognini so much that I am starting to like him. It must be some tennis variation of the Stockholm syndrome.
He's easy to have a love-hate relationship with. Unless you're Flavia, I guess.

Is anyone watching this? Has Federer's brain gone walkabout, is there a physical problem, or is RBA just playing out of his skin and putting on the pressure?

And Stan is down a double break in the third. Don't think he'll come back from that ...

Zverev beat Stan, and they didn't show a minute of it on TC, until MP.

To be fair, Mahut net rushed a bit blindly like Roddick a lot of time which made for some easy passing shots which count as winners and Mahut played great all set 2 but a stinker of a TB which again made things look better than they were. Still, they did for the most part both play well. Just not so sure I'd assess it as eyebrow raising personally.

Yawn

Fed takes it to a TB and starts off with a minibreak. He needs to do better on his 1st serve percentage though if he wants to avoid drama in the tb.

Stan crashes out against Zverev.

Damn..JBA is playing Roger the Right way...it's a shame fir him to loose because he kept the ball deep and made was able to move Roger to uncomfortable positions on the court

So Roger comes through a tight match in two TB. Incredibly, given the scoreline, he won 20% more points than RBA over the match!!

Very tough day Baron. He served 49% so it's not surprising he had trouble more often on his serve. I was more surprised that he struggled to break, a lot of credit to BA on that score but Roger was not returning as well as we've seen this year so far and also 2/10 on BP's doesn't help.

Donald Young shows against Fognini why people don't pay too much attention ...

Well.. I was hoping that incident went unnoticed :snicker..

Yeah,.Donald was a bit cranky today..I seen all players , especially Murray be a bit sully to the umpire...just a bad day at the office..all players have em..this shouldn't take away from the fact he has played some inspired tennis and people should pay attention

DYJR continues to win..but as always no love from this board..

The Donald usually plays well at the US based tourneys. He doesn't fair so well on the road. That being said, he's a little like the boy who cried wolf. He'll make a little run here or there and then drop off the planet for the rest of the season. I think people are a little tired of his false starts. And to address another point of contention, it was talked about heavily at the time when he beat Muzz, but then he didn't really do much after that so it was another false start.

He had another false start. :cover

False start today..this is tru Not really a false start to go this far in the tournament

Hmmm...don't know about that mess I just watched from Federer. Bautista Agut was probably playing about as well and he can and Roger sort of looked like he phoning it in and doing just enough to win and move on to the next round.

Meanwhile...Stan imploded again. Let's all act shocked...NOT! If Roger gets past Berdych as expected then he'll probably be playing on of the "NextGen" - Kyrgios or Zverev - both of whom have beating him before. He'll definitely need to serve better and play better than he did today to get past either of them. Question is - can one of those 2 guys finally have a big break through and win a Masters tournament by taking out Federer AND Nadal (Nadal's half of the draw is definitely less packed than Roger's)...no offense to Kei Nishikori...

Roger comes thru, was a tuff one..completely unexpected

That match was only tough because Roger seemed kind of distracted and tired - especially in the 2nd set - and dare I saw a wee bit bored? :snicker He wasn't playing anywhere near his best - and that's about as good a RBA can play. All things considered, despite the scoreline, to me it didn't FEEL close or tough because you always knew Roger had more gears - and game plans - to shift into.

The good Baron predicted it wouldn't be such an easy day at the office v. RBA, and he was right. Bautista-Agut also fought really hard today. So Rafa had a scratchier day yesterday, Roger today. But he got it done.

I actually agree, he seemed lethargic to me the whole match

I expected a much easier day than it was. He's never had any difficulties with RBA before, even on clay last year when he wasn't healthy. RBA played a smart and crafty match and Roger was well off his game for the most part. It will be interesting against Berd. I dug into the H2H and it was 5-5 from 2009-2014 and Roger has now won 6 straight with the last 5 being beatdowns. He's turned it around against Tomas and the Berd hasn't played too well this year so far. But if Roger serves at 49%...it will be tough for sure.
