I love the old school rivalry of Borg v. McEnroe, as a bonus.

If Federer could sit out Slams and Master Series to recover and refuel, why would he play an exo for money when he really needs to rest now? or maybe playing exo is a big part of his retirement plan.

There is a huge difference. In an exo, you just hit & giggle and collect the paycheck. So, it does not fundamentally contradict with recover and refuel plan.

IPTL went bankrupt last year due to Indian Currency problems. I have not heard anything about IPTL this year. I have reason to believe that is the end of IPTL. :rip:

So, poor folks like Roger and Rafa need some place to make a million bucks over a span of 3 days using their giggling skills.
Laver Cup fits the bill. :good:

But wasn't this somehow Roger's idea?

Roger is involved in it right from the beginning. But, I am not sure whether it is his idea or he is just playing along. I would tend to think that the later is the case.

Yes, I just read on tennis.com that it is Roger's brain child and is promoted by his agent/team.

Also, IPTL did indeed happen last year. But it was a low key stuff (so low key that I even forgot that it happened) involving just 4 teams and with almost no big name players. Don't know whether it is on tap this year.

Apparently, Roger is getting 2 million bucks for playing in Laver cup this year.

Next year's Laver Cup will be played in the US. It might be too much to hope for, but maybe in Madison Square Garden, or the BJK tennis center.:good:

Here is another reason why Fedal doubles will not happen at Laver cup.

If you have not checked the details, here is the format in a gist. On Friday, there will be three singles match and a doubles match.
Each match win on Friday counts for 1 pt. On Saturday, same story, but each match win counts for 2 pts. On Sunday, there will be at least one regular match and at most four regular matches. Each match win on sunday counts for 3 pts. Whichever team reaches 13 pts first wins.
If after 12 matches, the two teams are tied with 12 pts each, a deciding best of 1 set doubles match is played.

Surely Fedal doubles cannot happen on Fri or Sat, considering they are low key matches due to less pts per win. However, by the time you get to Sunday doubles, the winning team would be already decided (due to Europe being so strong). Surely Fedal would not play in a dead rubber.

2 million bucks? I guess you can't begrudge them turning up for glorified training hit. That's more than he'd make for reaching the US Open Final ($1.8 mill). I do wonder how the promoters make a bean to be honest if they are paying out these sort of figures.

2 million bucks? must be Mirka's idea then.

Regardless of the reason, I've been ragging on the tour for years saying the same thing! These people kvetch about the long season and how brutal play has become on their bodies, but if they can make a buck, "they're there!" My eyes just roll when the Next Gen players are WD or default in the middle of matches; even at the majors! Back in the day, few played all the events even though they weren't making as much money! It's hard to feel anything for them; totally in control of themselves! Playing tennis is not a real job if you seriously look at it! Win a few events and you're set for life; the tourney and the subsequent endorsements prove it! o_O

I doubt it. If the two teams tie after 12 matches, there is a "best of one set" doubles match. If it comes to that,
I think they will play that. However, with Europe being so strong, there is no way it will come to that.

I'm going to disagree. I think they'll play doubles together - and possibly the doubles match on Friday. The first day's matches are only worth 1 point each, so if they lose that's only 1 point the team loses. The 2nd day' points are 2 points for each match, the 3rd day it's 3 points for each match. So why not put your two weakest singles players on day 1 and let Roger and Nadal have their "same side of the net" bonding moment when it's worth the least amount of points? Added to that - people are buying tickets to see Roger and Nadal - so give 'em what they're paying for...

I don't get the impression that either of them would have a problem rooting for each other. I do think, though, that if Roger is still nursing his back, no one is going to abuse him. He has to play, as he's one of the instigators, right? But he's unlikely to play any more than he has to. He and Rafa can play doubles next year.

Roger has to play 1 singles match regardless of being one of the "instigators" because the rules state that everyone on the team must play 1 singles match.
