I enjoyed it as well, but apparently the ATP (and ITF) is NOT happy with Roger and Team 8 for creating this event. The ATP is creating a World Team Cup event (for 2019) and thinks this event is going to take too much focus from their event. It's apparently one of the reasons why they wouldn't agree to sanction it as an ATP event. I'm sure they're hoping this event will die off after Roger retires and is no longer the main drawing force for fans. I'm sure they don't think players are going to want to do too many of these team events in addition to regular events. Now that they've seen how well-executed this event was, why not just sanction it and drop their own team event idea - and the pissing contest.
Interesting info,
@Busted. I didn't know about it.
Here is an article, for others who didn't know. Would World Team Cup would replace Davis Cup? I should think it would have to. There talking about opening the year with it, before the AO, and holding it in Australia/Asia-Pacific. Not to be too Northern-Hemisphere centric, but that means it would never come to Europe or the US. At least the Laver Cup could also conceivably go to Asia/Oz, due to it's place in the current calendar. One of the things I liked about the Laver Cup was its economical format, by which I mean it was fast to watch, and relatively low-impact on the players who played. And the players seemed to really enjoy it. A mix of younger players and veterans, super-star ex-rivals to coach. And even when Roger isn't playing anymore, he and Godsick can back it, which means that there will likely be money, and players who will play it for him. I don't see it dying unless Roger loses interest or is compelled by the ATP to back off. But he created it to honor Laver...what are the chances he'll back out? Interesting questions.
