Thought he'd applied for protected ranking in which case he's most likely written the year off?

He is certainly eligible to apply for protected rankings as he meets the requirement of
being out of action for more than six months.

While I am not sure, I think he did not apply. This is because I see his name going down
the charts week after week. He is ranked 29 as of today.

Yeah, saw that too. Seems he's not the brightest chap around in that case.

Now that he is returning in 2015, I fully expect him to play the week before AO just
like he did in 2014 (and then he went out early from AO).

He's only done for 2014. He says he's recovering well so he should be fine hopefully by the time next year begins. His main problem will be lack of match play.

^ I just hope he dosent decide to play Sydney, like he did this year again? honestly playing a tournament too close to a major in my opinion is just insane.
I have missed Del Potro on the tour, like many others.
I hope his team carefully plan his playing schedule in 2015.

He's got to play something but Doha would be more than enough. Knowing him he'll play Sydney for match play though but if he has any sense he'll play a few matches and well, tank. But so far he hasn't shown much sense before slams which is partially why he's ended up as he has.

Roger,Kei and Cilic I believe have signed up to play,of course Hewitt who is the defending champion.

After being off so long, he should consider not coming back until Dubai, then go to IW. Playing Sydney, then going straight to a best-of-5 sets tournament doesn't seem like the best idea. Or make his return during the South American Golden Swing, before going to IW, as Rafa did.

He's a stubborn guy and I'd be surprised if he doesn't start by playing the first slam of the year even without match play.

We've moved on to the appendices and footnotes, buddy! :snigger

I don't think Rafa ever complained about appendicitis issue. He has complained
about blisters on the foot though.

I jinxed Rafa. Couldn't resist bringing this back up.

I can't imagine that Del Potro and/or his team will be this stupid.

He is currently ranked 64 and is projected to go down to 90's after the WTF (as he
played in WTF last year and won a match that gave him 200 points).

Now, at AO he can easily draw any of the top guns in the very first round itself.

Why would not somebody not apply for a protected ranking when they are eligible?

oh yeah. del potro is taking on a persistent sea breeze, and winning :)

I was reading somewhere a translated article saying he didn't want to comeback at the end of a season like in oct 2010 when he went 0-3 as it was a bit depressing.

^^that is part of his pre season training and the plan is to be atp ready for 2015.

:approved:

We're talking about a guy who frequently played mickey mouse 250s before many slams likely making any existing physical ailments worse and tiring himself out in the process and rendering his slam chances zilch. Clearly not the brightest chap around so I doubt he'll apply for protected ranking unless he or his team somehow find this thread!

RE: Breaking news: Juan Martin del Potro surgery will sideline him for rest of season

Well, it's unfortunate that my original post turned out to be correct, but hopefully, he is that much stronger for it to begin next year.

In the current state of affairs, I see no reason that he could not be top 4 in the world at some point if he stays healthy and his level returns. The trouble is, it will probably take him most of the year to get there. He'll have a bit of a tough battle as far as his seeding goes as he down to #138, with only his Sydney, AO, and Rotterdam points remaining. But he did it before, and he is still a young man, and he should have protected ranking, which has nothing to do with seeding. It only means he won't have to play in qualifiers. It should be called protected entry ranking to avoid confusion.

He might have to play top players in the 1st round. Well, that could work either way, depending on his level. A good result in Australian Open, say a SF, could help him rise in or close to the top 50.

But he needs 4000 points to get into the top 10. That could take awhile. But first mission is to come back strong and healthy. Then get into the top 32, for slam seeding purposes. He would only need a little over 1000 points to do that, may be possible by Roland Garros with some good results.

Respectfully,
masterclass
