This is actually a well known issue. Players can only decide which tournaments they play in
or how many tournaments they play in, but not how many matches they play in.

But, in JMDP's case, the solution is simple. If he can get a wild card into Brisbane he should.
If he goes deep (i.e, SF or better), he should skip Sydney and save himself for AO. On the
other hand, if he gets out at or before QF, he should play in Sydney. It is a simple, practical
and wise solution for JMDP, a player whom I believe has much less results in comparison
to his potential (mainly due to injuries though).

He's en Brisbane's entry list, hope he can have a healthy season

Tennis X News on Twitter,

Juan Martin Del Potro confirms return to tennis at Brisbane.

I just hope Del Potro is not over playing before the AO in 2015,I would prefer him to defend his title at Apia International than to play 2 tournaments before the AO in 2015,just my thoughts.

He's out of Brisbane, so it's not looking good in the short term. Hopefully he'll be back, but how good will he be? We'll have to wait and see, but I'd love a good season out of him, a slam final, a few great runs, the lad deserves it, and as fans, so do we...

What short term? This man is cursed. It has been five full years since he won the USO. He is constantly having issues, barely has a sustained month free of injuries and in good form.

Besides the wrist...and one minor knee issue...what other constant injuries?

Yes, he does not have a laundry list of injuries like Tommy Haas. However, this wrist alone
has sucked a lot out of his career. Five years is a lot of time and he has not become a full
force yet again.

But both wrists are problematic, or am I remembering it wrong?

Yes, left wrist started early 2014 and until then it was the right wrist issues.

RE: Breaking news: Juan Martin del Potro surgery will sideline him for rest of season

Del Potro actually did a good thing by dropping out of Brisbane (assuming his current issue
is not serious). The protected ranking can only be used by a player for nine tournaments and
it is better not to waste it on just a 250 tourney. He has been given a wild card in Sydney
and so Sydney would not be counted against the 9 he is allowed to enter using PR. It is
reasonable to assume that he will get a wild card for Buenos Aires and perhaps in another
South American tourney in Feb.

It is better for him to use the PR entry for AO, Dubai, Indian Wells, Miami, Monte Carlo,
Madrid, Rome, Queens and Montreal. Hopefully, his ranking would be high enough to
get him a direct entry in RG and Wimby and so I am not counting them.

Finally, just a quick reminder that "protected ranking" is a misnomer and it only
gets you the entry and not seeding as per the protected ranking. Seeding will be done
using the current real ranking only.

Back in 2009 I was so convinced this guy was going to become world number one. After his match with Fed at RG I predicted he would be a huge force in the US Open, and then he took it. His game was dismantling Nadal and wiping Federer off the board. Then... he got wrist injuries. A lot. For the next 5 years. It's really too bad because he has always had the game to cause all the top guys problems. He's one of the few players that could really take Nadal down at RG but somehow they never met there.

He just announced that he is dropping out of the Australian Open. Have to feel bad for the guy. Just no luck with injuries.

Ooooooh Nooooooooo :cry

What a huge loss this is for the AO and for Tennis in general.
On his day Juan Martin del Potro was such a great striker of the ball you could wish to see and he didn't take precious time between points either.

I am not surprised with the news,Del Potro had a training session in Melbourne and he said he was still feeling pain in his wrist

To me he only played Sydney to see how his wrist would fare,he even said in his press conference he was still feeling pain.I interviewed Del Potro at Sydney 4 years ago when he first came back from his wrist injury and was given a wild card.He is just one of the most affable players I have ever met, nothing is to much for him,he gives so much of his time to his fans.

Del Potro I feel you have done the correct thing, what is the point of further damage to your wrist, you have the whole season ahead of you.Take Care Big Man
