At last we got a single great match in this very uncompetitive tourney. The notion that youngsters are knackered while Old Father Time himself - Federer - is leaping like a lamb is attractive, but unsustainable.

Let's hope the final is as great as the all-Swiss semi...

I think it's clear there was no agenda to this thread other than to comment on the unusually low level of competitive matches at this year's tournament.

We'll agree to disagree. If the title of the thread been.. "Is (THIS) WTF the worst advertisement for men's tennis - ever?"

But it was.. " Is the WTF the worst advertisement for men's tennis - ever?"

You chose to see on thing in that.. I suspect another possibility :-/

Would you maintain that position if Kieran changed the title of the thread?

Changing the title to this year's WTF would be a good idea alright.

That's just you being dishonest, actually. We're getting used to that round here. Why don't you try a novel thingy and actually read the thread, instead of writing stupid stuff like this?

Just my opinion, that's all... :popcorn

It doesn't need to be changed, buddy. Everybody knows what it's about. Nowhere in the thread have I offered up a history of the event. I just mentioned this years. I thought it was obvious from my posts...

Yeah it's crystal clear. but there used to be lots of intelligent Nadal troll bashing Federer's achievements, his opposition. Frankly speaking I enjoyed discussing with those creative intelligent Nadal fans.

This is dumb trolling attempt, 3/10 in my book.

But I have to say, I disagree about the current level of competition being low. Rafa being injured for large swathes of the year certainly doesn't help optimise the level of competition. As for the WTF, I strongly believe that the reason it's been so lacklustre, apart from yesterday of course, is because 5 of the eight participants had to go to the wire to get into it. I think they expended most of their mental resources just to qualify and had nothing left. My suggestion would be having more than a 1 week gap for the tournament. It seems like that wasn't enough this time...

My point is it's not fair to bash tournament which has 34 years history of top class competition based on few low quality matches. If Op comes with stats how this tournament always has been "low Quality WTA level" tournaments based on 34 years, then I'll find this topic worth of discussing.

I disagree with competition is high now, besides I think it has reached all time low but this this is not topic of thread neither 4-5 matches can prove/disprove WTF's status. So better thing is we should move ahead for more extended view.

This won't be true IMHO. This thread is about marketing strategy. I don't think this year's WTF is failed to receive response of Fans. Attendance at WTF this year is as good as it used to be. No empty seats like some Masters.

No

Maintaining such an intractable position wouldn't be helpful.

There have been great WTFs. Not this one, that's for sure. But the final, if the expected one takes place, has the potential to be an epic, going by the forms of Nole and Roger.

I agree Murat, that's my fault, I'm only referring to this years tourney...

For those whose first language isn't English...

:puzzled

I thought that was a fairly clear response... let me try again!

If the title of the thread is changed then my position will change from suspicion to neutrality. Obviously I think the guy who started the thread is dishonest and often comes up with sly comments for petty reasons, but I'll assume the best. Still wouldn't cross the road to wee on him if he was on fire, but there you go! Moving on...

I think you need to take overview of debates on other forums. Bashing WTF, Weeks at No 1, Federer's opposition or whichever record Nadal hasn't achieved so far (Actually it's never ending list!) are Nadal fan's top agendas.

I don't think this is anything separate from it except it lacks in special "Cherry Picking" intelligence of Nadal fans, may be op hasn't mastered that skill yet.

You didn't answer me actually, do message me about your stand.

Why don't you say what you really feel eh? :laydownlaughing

Read the thread and stop trolling on it. It's obviously about this years event. How do I know? Because I wrote it and all my posts refer to this years event, and I stated clearly that it's about this years event.

If you think about it, fastgrass agrees with you. Default setting there is that you're wrong... :cover

Other than Federer-Wawrinka, this tournament was a atrocious...and that's not even talking about the final fiasco. Now it's just a complete disaster, and that's no hyperbole. Nevertheless, maybe THIS YEAR's WTF was a bad advertisement for men's tennis, not the WTF in general, which I'm sure was the point.

There probably is a subtle agenda behind the thread, but the overall point stands (Kieran don't bother denying because while you might be right, we're both too stubborn so let's save it ;) ).

However, I must agree with you that the level of competition shouldn't be based on one tournament. Otherwise, was the level of competition on the men's tour terrific in September, when Nishikori and Cilic reached the US Open final, but is awful now, despite the fact that both tournaments involved many of the same players? Generally, the best guys are going to win. That's how it always worked. The best guys for the past 6 years have been really, REALLY good, and even then we've had a crap load of surprises throughout the years. The difference is, to get a surprise tournament winner, it would often require going past two, maybe three all-time greats (and Murray), and well, that's no easy feat. I don't understand why people think this is some sort of indication of the competition not stepping up. Yeah, I'd love to see any competition go through Federer, Nadal and Djokovic routinely.

I will say this however, the current quality of the top 10 beyond the usual suspects IS weak. I kinda chuckled when people were so excited this year about Wawrinka, Nishikori and Cilic. Two of them won majors and they deserve props, but on an average match-to-match basis, the tour isn't in great shape if those 3 are "the best of the rest." Sorry, give me Hewitt, Roddick, Davydenko and Nalbandian any day of the week. Also, give me Soderling and Del Potro any day of the week.
