Ok that changes things I guess. It's going to be tight battle with the other three contenders also all playing this week. He needs a good run at his home tourney and a good draw in Paris. Seriously, it's going to be tricky. I hope he makes it, although I'd like to see Stan, Tsonga and Gasquet making it too. Especially Wawrinka actually.

Yeah I'd like to see Wawrinka there too. His matches with Djokovic this year have been some of the best of the year. Pretty gutted that Haas probably has little to no chance of qualifying too. Getting to top 10 first was gonna take a good few points, let alone number 8 but I'd have loved to have seen him there. Best of three on indoor hards would suit his game well and he'd be a dangerous opponent on any good day.

You are wishing too much. There is not enough room for all your wishes to come true.
There are only 8 slots in WTF.

Fed typically does not perform well in Paris. Year 2011 was an exception.
So, he really needs to do well in Shanghai and Basel.

They can still make it can't they? ;) I meant that I am fine with any one of those players making it instead of Federer if it comes to that. Except for Stan don't really have a preference at the moment. That's interesting about Fed not bring competitive at bercy. Maybe now it counts things will change, he's good indoors.

Oh. I see. I don't mind Stan, Gasquet, Tsonga making it. But, I certainly don't prefer Milos
or Isner making it to WTF. I don't mind Haas making it either, although it is unlikely.

Bercy is a crazy tournament. Typically, the top players (not just Fed) do not
win that tournament. Some outsider takes the cup. Last year it was Ferrer.
Also, Bercy was one of the Masters title that eluded Fed until 2012 (Of course,
he still does not have Rome and Monte Carlo). So, I am hoping Roger makes it
before Bercy starts with good showings in Basel and Shanghai.

It looks like Berdych and Del Potro are almost shoe in for the WTF although it is
not guaranteed.

Then, with Nadal, Djokovic and Ferrer already in (and Murray out), we have
three spots from the six contenders Fed, Wawrinka, Gasquet, Tsonga, Milos
and Isner. My choice (not prediction) is Fed and two of Wawrinka, Gasquet and Tsonga.

I agree that it was astonishing how long it took Roger to win Bercy. That speaks to what it means to be the last 1000 of the season, and why they'd like to move to Feb.

Personally, I expect to see Roger there, and I agree about Wawrinka...he's played some great matches this year and deserves it. I'd also like to see Tsonga make it, then go in match-ready and motivated to the AO.

Federer has been seen practising with his trusty wand (90) in shanghai, :nono..

so looks like he is too stubborn to change which is typical of him..he still thinks he could beat a 2007 version of himself..:laydownlaughing

Wow, in 2007 he was beaten twice by Canas and Nalby...maybe 2006 would be better !!

He was better in 2006 for sure but that Nalbandian from 2007 was a beast and he didn't just beat Fed. He made monkeys out of Djokovic and Nadal too. I'll miss him on tour and in that form. Incredible to watch in 2007.

I wonder if he's made up his mind on the larger racket. In fairness, there's arguments for both rackets, but the argument that wins is that he choose the one he feels most comfortable with. Also, he may want to finally get the smaller one out of his system and be sure of the change - and then use the larger one in his pre-season prep in corrupt and nasty Dubai...

;)

Beijing and Tokyo are about to wind up. This week there is only one contender left
with a chance to surpass Federer. If Gasquet wins one more match (that would involve
defeating Djoker), he can become #7 in atp race and push Fed down to #8. I don't
see much chance of it happening though.

So, it looks like Roger was able to survive this week without dropping further even
though he was not playing. Let us see whether he can do the same when he is playing.

I read reports that he was in Shanghai as early as Thursday itself. So, he must
be serious about putting in a good performance. He is not taking it lightly.

With Andy Murray out and Tsonga slipping, the WTF should be interesting this year - Gasquet and Wawrinka are likely to make it, which gives the tournament two "third tier" players. Last year it was only Tipsarevic.

Someone mentioned Isner as a possibility and I just don't see it. In the live rankings he's over 500 points behind Raonic and Tsonga, both of whom are 3-400 points behind the top eight seeds. In other words, even if one of Federer, Wawrinka and Gasquet slips, Tsonga and Raonic are the two main contenders and Isner is way behind.

Roger needs to make some major changes. If it ain't broke don't fix it, but with Roger the whole neighborhood has gotten together and smashed all his windows. That s*** is very broke and he needs to find some answers.

Banking on the old racquet that won him 17 slams has zero relevance as he is clearly not that same player. He needs to adapt to the times, get the extra power and bigger sweet spot. Points might end faster and there will be less souvenirs for the crowd. Change like that shows he still means business and wants to stop embarrassing himself out there. Time is running out for him, if he is awful next season it is probably game over.

When I said Federer had the perfect opportunity to retire on top at 2012 Wimbledon, I did not envisage such a rapid decline to follow. But with the Olympics that year, and his lack of singles gold, there was very little chance of him retiring just after winning Wimbledon. Even if it wasn't an Olympic year, Federer's personality doesn't seem like one to walk away on top. He'll grasp at every last straw before the last flicker of himself fades. Greed is bad, and ugly. Either way, Nadal vs Federer at the World Tour Finals will be nothing short of fascinating.

^ I am not sure how there can be a point cut-off to qualify. If everyone from 5 to 12 suck till the end of the year and nobody from behind pushes them, someone should be able to qualify with less points than 4785, no?

See, as I told you, the cut off has now come down to 4650 from 4785 as we now
know the actual results of Beijing and Tokyo tournaments. It will keep
decreasing after each week as we get to know the real outcomes of the tournaments of
that week.

Generally speaking, accumulating 3000 points lets you finish in Top 10.
To be in top 8, you probably need around 3500 or little less. These are general
ball park figures (and needless to say the actual figure can vary from year to year)
and not mathematically certain figure. Mathematically certain figure is the one
that you see as the cutoff in ATP live race page and that will keep decreasing
after each week.

He is always positive, only his results are not. Can't take his words anymore. Need
to see action.

He said he is in great shape before Wimbledon after winning Halle. He said similarly
before USO. Fact is no player, Fed or anyone else, will come to interview and announce
that they feel miserable.

i know that..i just wanted to mention an article where fed speaks, very quiet lately..

he didn't want to discuss robredo..and no mention of any larger wand he might be changing to.
