He's far superior talent, but a far inferior match player...

I always have disagreed completely with the notion that Monfils is an talented player, who under achieves only due to his head.

He is a player who is frequently top 20, top 30, so his talent is around this range. His physical abilities are well above average, both his endurance, his reaction times, acrobatic moves and raw power. That's undeniable.

But, even with this advantage, he don't ever get results from even a, say, second tier guy from #4 to #8. For me, this is a consequence from his inferior talent.

Yes, he tries a trick shot here and there. But watch the highlights of any of his matches... how many moments of "talent" you find? Just a few here and there. You find more highlights in one Dimitrov match than in all matches Monfils had in one year.

He is a good player, no doubt, and good for the tour. But because he is a very good athlete, not because of his "talent". Oh, and I like his attitude too...

Yes Sir.. Rafa is playing outstanding since he was down 1-3 15-40.. Today he is serving well, hitting his fh with a lot of zip and using the slices perfectly.. Rafa is really in rhythm ..

Is the semi tomorrow or Sunday? Haven't been able to watch much tennis all week but looking forward to that one. In all likelihood it'll be Novak v Rafa.

Congratulation to Rafa and his fans.
Watch the entire match. He is truely coming back. Not at his peak (2010 & 2013 USO), but clearly very close to his prime HC performance.

Well done Ralf!

He doesn't half overreact :p You'd swear he won Roland Garros!

Nehmeth you have been officially dropped off the Debbie downer list and your Fronty has been promoted back to his normal spot along side of Fiero, the Debbie Downers of Rafa victories .

He played well and it's good to win but he hasn't won anything of note yet this year to warrant a celebration like that. Nishikori made too many errors and served badly as he does 60% of the time but you celebrate like that when you win a tournament against a top opponent. Not when you win a quarter final :s If he miraculously managed to beat Novak a celebration like that would be more apt than today is all I'm saying.

Even if Rafa were to defeat Djoker, solve world hunger, resolve the Middle East crisis and pull the orange toupee off of Trump's big head, you would still find a way to be critical of him.

^ Not true, I just said he played well if you read above. My only issue was celebrating like he'd won a slam for winning a quarter final against a guy who didn't even play well. If they both played lights out and it came down to 16-14 in a 3rd set TB then maybe a big celebration would be ok but it was a whatever performance by Nishikori and he only won a quarter final match and will likely lose the semi to Novak. So why exactly the crazy celebration is warranted I don't know. I find it embarrassing to watch celebrations like that unless the guy won a tournament and only by beating a top opponent.

Tsonga played a stunning game there. That slice was class as were the two aggressive forehand winners.

I feel the same way; "act like you been there before!" The match the other day against Zverev made him look even worse; "you beat an unseeded 18 y.o. Nadal!" What an idiot! All that pumping up and jumping around! :cover

Awful TB alright. Pointless doing well all set and then playing crud like that in the TB.
