I don't ever look forward to Maria and Vika matches because it usually comes down to whose serve sucked the least.

Taylor Townsend has a good game. She likes attacking the net, and I hope she can improve on that. I like offensive tennis. Today she seems to struggle a bit because Stosur is moving her around the court, exposing her limited movement.

Well we got the match we all wanted,I did anyway....;)

Sharapova v Azarenka

Vika leads Maria on HC,I understand Vika has been injured for most of 2014,I like her comeback,Maria has had a stomach virus.

I am selecting a Vika win, going on both performances of their 1st rd matches.

Vika to win in 3 sets.

I hate to bring it up, but Townsend's struggling with movement because she's carrying around quite a few extra "LB's!" Whoever is training her, should be taken to task! She reminds me of the 70's where it was common for women with athletic ability to succeed and compete with that extra girth, but that all changed in the 80's with the ascension of Martina Navratilova to #1 who showed everyone how it should be done! No one seems to be saying this here or in the commentary on TV! It's the truth, not just being a mean person! It's so obvious she needs to do something about it if she expects to move up the rankings! :popcorn :nono :puzzled :cover :eyepop

Garrison is Towsend's coach.Weight issues have been at times a issue currently at the WTA.Towsend's weight has been discussed before.I understand your point with Martina, who at one stage was carrying unwanted kilo's if my memory is still intact,Martina did get herself into shape. At the end of the day,it is up to the player, trainer and coach who feel carrying extra kilo's to the weight of a player is indeed a disadvantage.

I like both Towsend and Keys games,I dont think Maddy is a ball basher, under Davenport she is learning to play with controlled aggression off both wings.

I think Madison Keys is peaking plus her declaration put me off a little bit ..:popcorn just like Genie did last year and Sloane before that.I am more empressed with Pliskova,Muguruza,Svitolina and Coco is starting to play good.I think in terms of talent and mental strength I will pick Genie she very rarely implodes...but for flair I pick Townsend.

I definitely feel REALLY uncomfortable with this topic for many reasons. First Townsend is super young and impressionable. Second a lot of that could be hereditary and even if she were to lose weight her natural "healthy" and even "athletic" weight could be a lot more than other athletes (look at Kvitova). Still I kind of agree that in some ways its dangerous for a player who moves that much and puts that much pressure on their knees and ankles to be carrying around that much weight on court.

You don't watch much women's tennis so you can't be sure what's really being said, right?

Since she came on the scene it's been discussed ad-nauseum here and on TV (media outlets). Continuing to talk about it isn't going to change the facts. It's her personal decision. My gut instinct is she will do something about it when any of the following happen:

1. She gets tired of seeing all her contemporaries far exceed her accomplishments
2. She gets overlooked for a Fed Cup or Olympic bid because of her fitness
3. She injures herself because she's not in the best shape possible
4. She gets a new coach who won't take her on unless she gets serious about fitness
5. Some other reason (I can't list them all)... :dodgy:

Yes. That's Larry and his mate.

Is that the same Larry who ran the tournament back in 2001...he has some nerve to show his face there.
Don't think so. Larry Ellison is a billionaire who helped start Oracle. He bought the tournament about 4 years (?) ago because he was a huge tennis fan. If I'm not mistaken, IMG owned/ran the tourney back in 2001. What's the last name of the Larry you are referring to?
I can't remember his last name, but I think the person who was in charged back in 2001 - well I thought his name was Larry too. I could be wrong.

You're sorta right; I don't follow women's tennis as much as I used to! I find it unwatchable with the prevalence of ball bashing, incessant grunting and screeching, and catching up with how slow the men are playing with all the toweling off, getting attention from trainers and coaches on court, and challenging calls that are so wrong they s/b penalized 2 pts instead of just the 1! It's quite homogenized with only a handful of gifted and talented chess player types worth watching like Aggie! She's the only player I really follow and she's falling a little and being overpowered like Martina Hingis! Hopefully Navratilova can help her a little before she too retires saying "screw it!"

This is a topic that makes me uncomfortable as well. Sure there may be fitness issues, but no one knows how much she tries or how hard she works. I remember Lyndsay Davenport being quite hefty early in her career but she kept at it, got in better shape, and look what happened. Give time for Townsend to grow up and figure it out.

I also dont like to bring up weight issues,as you stated in your posts, there are a lot of other circumstances, that we may not be aware of.Yes in some cases it can be hereditary, also if your thyroid is under-active you can put on weight.I also blame the media for this obsession with weight,of course as woman we come in all shapes and sizes, being healthy is of prime importance, regardless of how much one weighs.According to media, one has to be 'stick figure' to be successful in life? what BS and total rubbish, though it sells magazines dosent it.In my day we never dieted at all, just ate good healthy food, everything in moderation I say.Weight issues have now spread into all walks of life, sad to say.As a athlete I agree with you, carrying around too much weight, can be too much pressure on knees and ankles, still at the end of the day, that is up to the player and their team to address that area.

I agree with Fashionista, Madison game is evolving thanks to Lindsey, I see solid overall improvement to many elements of her game.
