I don't ever look forward to Maria and Vika matches because it usually comes down to whose serve sucked the least.

I hate to bring it up, but Townsend's struggling with movement because she's carrying around quite a few extra "LB's!" Whoever is training her, should be taken to task! She reminds me of the 70's where it was common for women with athletic ability to succeed and compete with that extra girth, but that all changed in the 80's with the ascension of Martina Navratilova to #1 who showed everyone how it should be done! No one seems to be saying this here or in the commentary on TV! It's the truth, not just being a mean person! It's so obvious she needs to do something about it if she expects to move up the rankings! :nono uzzled :cover :eyepop

I think Madison Keys is peaking plus her declaration put me off a little bit .. just like Genie did last year and Sloane before that.I am more empressed with Pliskova,Muguruza,Svitolina and Coco is starting to play good.I think in terms of talent and mental strength I will pick Genie she very rarely implodes...but for flair I pick Townsend.fashionista said:tossip said:Townsend is a joy to watch...she has the game to be at the top .I hope she takes her fitness seriously because she cant waste all that talent.I prefer her to that ballbasher Madison Keys ...
I like both Towsend and Keys games,I dont think Maddy is a ball basher, under Davenport she is learning to play with controlled aggression off both wings.

Garrison is Towsend's coach.Weight issues have been at times a issue currently at the WTA.Towsend's weight has been discussed before.I understand your point with Martina, who at one stage was carrying unwanted kilo's if my memory is still intact,Martina did get herself into shape. At the end of the day,it is up to the player, trainer and coach who feel carrying extra kilo's to the weight of a player is indeed a disadvantage.

I can't remember his last name, but I think the person who was in charged back in 2001 - well I thought his name was Larry too. I could be wrong.kskate2 said:Don't think so. Larry Ellison is a billionaire who helped start Oracle. He bought the tournament about 4 years (?) ago because he was a huge tennis fan. If I'm not mistaken, IMG owned/ran the tourney back in 2001. What's the last name of the Larry you are referring to?special700 said:kskate2 said:Yes. That's Larry and his mate.
Is that the same Larry who ran the tournament back in 2001...he has some nerve to show his face there.

You don't watch much women's tennis so you can't be sure what's really being said, right?
Since she came on the scene it's been discussed ad-nauseum here and on TV (media outlets). Continuing to talk about it isn't going to change the facts. It's her personal decision. My gut instinct is she will do something about it when any of the following happen:
1. She gets tired of seeing all her contemporaries far exceed her accomplishments
2. She gets overlooked for a Fed Cup or Olympic bid because of her fitness
3. She injures herself because she's not in the best shape possible
4. She gets a new coach who won't take her on unless she gets serious about fitness
5. Some other reason (I can't list them all)... :dodgy:

I definitely feel REALLY uncomfortable with this topic for many reasons. First Townsend is super young and impressionable. Second a lot of that could be hereditary and even if she were to lose weight her natural "healthy" and even "athletic" weight could be a lot more than other athletes (look at Kvitova). Still I kind of agree that in some ways its dangerous for a player who moves that much and puts that much pressure on their knees and ankles to be carrying around that much weight on court.

I agree with Fashionista, Madison game is evolving thanks to Lindsey, I see solid overall improvement to many elements of her game.fashionista said:tossip said:Townsend is a joy to watch...she has the game to be at the top .I hope she takes her fitness seriously because she cant waste all that talent.I prefer her to that ballbasher Madison Keys ...
