Mayer came through, taking the second more authoratively, 6-2.

Scratchy play from Fed. First srv % not high enough. He squeaks out the opening set 6-4

Fed picks up his play a bit in the 2nd and takes the match 6-4 6-3

interesting enough, this match was barely ten minutes shorter than the 2nd round three-setter. i guess he still has to find a groove. as someone said in the new racquet thread, one problem will be having the confidence on the big points. sure enough, it took Fed about four set points in the first (on his serve, similar to the matchpoints yesterday), and he squandered a myriad of break points, including a bunch of match points).

as kskate said, the first serve %a was a problem, throughout - even dropped back below 50% in the second. he did hit some big ones, though - 7 aces, which isn't too bad for two straightforward(ish) sets.

so, Fed will play another german, Flo "weirdo" Mayer. i think they met in the Stockholm finals back in ... '10? '11? really, this shouldn't be too interesting, but these days, who knows. at the least, more insight into how the Fed handles his new racquet.

Yeah, I think this might be the end of the road for the Fog (sorry Chewy). There will be some great shotmaking in that match for sure. I'd like to say Nico should come through, but he has a habit of giving matches away. We'll see how that goes. It could be a toss-up.

Very important match for Juan Monaco as he defending 500 points, a loss would result in a severe drop in rankings:

So far Monaco - Almagro
64, 0-6, 3-1

Nico won the last 5 games in a row and the match. Hamburg was Monaco's biggest win in his career last year, taking him to 10 in the world, now this loss drops him to 30 as of now.

That's a big drop. He's in danger of entering the USO unseeded at this rate.

I haven't seen Verdasco this week, but apparently he's been playing well, based on the few snippets I heard the announcers say yesterday. Have you seen any of him in Hamburg?

I'm not familiar with his opponent today, but I'm thinking he's got a good chance to get through to the semis. Of course then he'll mostly likely face Federer ...

I just turned it on a few minutes ago, and am enjoying it so far. It's always fun to watch two lefties go at it.

Verdy takes the breaker. I think he wins it in straights now

Are you still watching? I thought this would be a 7-6, 6-1, but credit to Delbonis for sticking around. They're in a second set tiebreak, and he has already saved a match point.

Delbonis wins the second set tiebreak, playing some incredible shots, taking it to the third set.
