Denisovich, pay attention please. We're neither of us getting younger.

You brought Nadal (or his matches) into it because you were being partisan. There's no other reason. Otherwise, why pick Nadal and not Novak, or Borg, or Sampras?

Anyway, you saw a great match today. Can you tell the difference between that one and the matches on your list? If so, you'll agree that what's great is seldom...

No no no. I brought Nadal into it to show to you that this is a subjective standard. You do like Nadal don't you? So you might think some of his matches were great where I wouldn't. Get it? I am partisan and so are you. That is my point.

I saw a classic match, a true thriller. And I have seen a couple of great matches before this tournament. I'd rank this one on the top of my list, but that doesn't mean that the other matches were not great. You are only barely able to enjoy a tennis match here for some reason.

There was no need to bring Nadal into it, or his matches. I don't base the word "great" on my own giddy emotions. It was a pointless point you made, trying to reduce a neutral thread to a fanboy brawl. ;)

I enjoy most tennis matches, but I'm not like the person who listens to a catchy pop song and confuses it with great music. A great tennis match is a rarity and it cheapens the word "great" to apply it to run of the mill stuff...

You are hypersensitive about Nadal. Get over it. It was just to point out to you that it's very subjective what constitutes a great match. It was not pointless.

And congrats to having such an exquisite taste. Too bad you're sharing the board with mere commoners like me. :puzzled

It was partisan, don't worry about it, it's alright.

And don't worry about the other thing, I'm not a snob :snigger

Partisanship is part of fandom and welcomed. I understand Kieran's point and agree that the word "great" has been so overused in sport that, anymore, it means mediocre to good.

Well, partisanship is okay, but let's not interpret every comment made as a reason to attack Nadal, ya know what I mean? ;)

And let's not interpret every comment mentioning Nadal by a someone who roots for Djokovic as an attack on Nadal, okay?

Then don't make them and I won't. ;)

I'm getting this from Nole fans recently, this touchiness. It's making me feel nostalgic...

Don't worry about the second part. It goes back further even than you.

As for Nadal, you derailed the thread by instantly going on a pointless attack. Why didn't you just reply on the terms of the OP? What had it got to do with Nadal? Your very first sentence here was hostile and defensive. It was a thread about great matches, FFS. The nature of greatness. It would have been easy to apply yourself there instead of...anyway, don't worry about it.

Nole won a great match and this one's looking good. Forget about it, enjoy the tennis...

Absolutely fabulous tennis in these semis. As good as we've had in a long time.

Can anyone here (El Dude?) give me Nole's 5 set record versus that of Rafa and Borg? Those three would appear to have the best five set records. Murray may have a decent one too. I know Roger has come from 2 sets down 9 times, and Murray 7 times, but I don't know about the others. That stat would be cool to know as well. Any assistance is greatly appreciated.

Novak Djokovic is truly one of the all time greats. He proved it again today.

Here you go, Shawn. This will show you just about everyone's 5-set record:

First semi was great. I think Jerzy will learn but at the moment he's very erratic. Murray held himself together very well to take the second semi...

I also thought Janowicz held his nerve very well for his first GS SF and given that the crowd was calling for his head from the first point. I think his next try he could be lethal.

I'd definitely have the Nole/Delpo down as a great match. The word does get bandied around too frequently, but in this case it's more than justified.

Exactly. We can all recognise it when we see it...

I don't know if that kid will be any different to goran. He certainly seems temperamental, to be kind. He has a lot of growing up to do, but he's a force of nature and he handled it well for the first couple of sets...

I'm still not convinced he has much of a future. I predict he'll be another one of those guys who gets hot, has a few noteworthy wins, then fades back into a supporting role. Like others before him (Cilic, Simon, Verdasco, Baghdatis), I could see him maintaining a respectable ranking, maybe even briefly dipping into the Top 10, but I don't think we're seeing someone who's going to be the next big thing. More like the next right now.
