I don't know if that kid will be any different to goran. He certainly seems temperamental, to be kind. He has a lot of growing up to do, but he's a force of nature and he handled it well for the first couple of sets...

I'm still not convinced he has much of a future. I predict he'll be another one of those guys who gets hot, has a few noteworthy wins, then fades back into a supporting role. Like others before him (Cilic, Simon, Verdasco, Baghdatis), I could see him maintaining a respectable ranking, maybe even briefly dipping into the Top 10, but I don't think we're seeing someone who's going to be the next big thing. More like the next right now.

Jerzy has the big weapon that all those players you listed lack. I think he has a good attitude and a decent head on his shoulders (which a few of those listed lack). An explosive temper and a general dislike of your opponent is only a bad thing if it negatively affects you. For Jerzy it is about becoming more consistent from the baseline and improving the ROS. I do think we will be seeing him in the top 10 real soon and eventually he could be a top 5 player and slam winner. Definitely see more potential in him than Raonic, Tomic, and the other young guns.

One thing he needs to utilize is way more variety in his serve. The power of his serve is incredible but he kept hitting it in the same place game after game and it really didn't take long for Murray to adjust to it and get a good read and return on it after the first set. The fact that Murray out aced him obviously points to Murray's stellar return of serve, but not only that, a lot of it's down to placement. Like Djokovic (who's serving brilliantly all tournament) Murray's 1st serve placement is very, very good. Less said about Murray's 2nd serve the better. Jerzy's 2nd serve on the other hand is extremely fast but again a bit more work on placement and he'll be a complete animal imo.

wrong again, if you think Verdasco doesn't have a big weapon with that forehand, you probably watched the wrong sport :laydownlaughing

definitely more potential from JJ than Raonic and Tomic? now that''s bold.

Verdasco's forehand is not Jerzy's serve. Verdasco isn't going to win anything with just a good forehand while the rest of his game is average at best. Now you put a decent all around game on a serve like Jerzy and add to the fact that, by default, he is tougher mentally than Verdasco, and you have a truly dangerous player.

Raonic has a slightly better serve than Jerzy and that's it. Absolutely no other edge in sight. Tomic has talent but has not shown the mental makeup needed to get near the top. Not yet anyways.

Verdasco's game except the forehand is average at best? i think Rafa knows a thing or two about him, and he thinks Verdasco always has the game but no mental makeup to go with it, which makes him a huge underachiever. Nobody with average game can play that level against Nadal, or beat Murray at AO.... it only happened because his head was there, but there is no doubt about the level of his game.

Last I checked Verdasco has played more than 4 matches in his career. Aside from 2009 he has always been a huge underachiever which we agree on. He is dangerous, no doubt about that, but at age 29 chances are he is not going to suddenly become an elite player. Also, aside from his forehand the rest of his game IS very average. Mediocre, inconsistent serve, average backhand, good but not elite movement, etc. It isn't all mental with him but no doubt he should have been a lot better player than he is. Jerzy has a lot more time and that serve is a lot bigger weapon than Verdasco's forehand. So if he improves the rest of his game he figures to have more potential than a career underachiever, right

Darth and Ricardo. Stop it. I know 2 intelligent posters on this forum can debate an issue without name calling.

good to see you admit that he is indeed an underachiever, what makes someone an underachiever? its always guys who have great game but crappy mental makeup. So what makes one a 'huge underachiever'? go figure.

i think as always, it's really hard to seperate the mental side from the rest when trying to assess a player, especially one like Verdasco. just look at his serve: he can actually hit Great serves, as was evidenced v Murray - but it also goes astray so damn often. maybe a stabler mind would keep the ball toss problems etc. in check. then on the other hand, maybe a technically sounder serve would give him less to worry about, and the circle is about to close.

the other thing though, i think Darth was spot on in that the main difference between a Verdasco fh and a JJ serve is that the latter can carry him through patches of bad play much better than the former could carry Fernando, so if we're looking at mid- and long-term potential, JJ has a great advantage.
