The word "great" is commonly abused, buddy, not least of all by commentators who are trying to sell you something...

Great matches, though not 'common commodities', are still not 'Borg - Federer' rare, who thinks Becker, Edberg, Courier are not 'great'? i think you misused 'great' the other way, like you are trying to over-compensate, because even the Fed/Nadal match wouldn't be up to it by your definition.

(or you let us know if that counts as a 'great match', if not what other great matches have you seen in the last 2 decades?)

:nono

You are the one 'abusing' the word great.

Anyway, you still have not been able to give us an example of a 'great' match. And I agree with ricardo that there is a difference between a 'classic' and a 'great' match. To concede to you, I'd say there are also 'good' matches. As well as 'average' matches.

To be fair, I'm not the one who thinks every match is a great match: I don't abuse the term, I distribute it sparingly.

And I'm not the one who thought the thread was an attack on Novak, of all things. If you get time, will you explain that to me, please...

You're using a straw man here. Nobody is saying that every match is a great one. There are 120 or so matches in the mens singles, and I listed 10 of them 'great'.

And who said this thread was an attack on Novak? I said it discredited this great tournament that it has been so far.

honestly, just show me what you think are great matches in the past, say 20 years? i know the word gets abused by some, but you are taking it too far the other way - you also abused it.

Seriously what great matches have Sampras and Federer played? i can barely think of very few, by your standard.

Your list was promiscuous.

You want to try explain how you took this thread to be an attack on Novak?

You are making that claim.

My list was a number of matches I considered to be great ones. Now you are just being rude.

Maybe some folks may notice a slight difference between this match and a few others this W?

IF this match has been played at or anywhere near the level of the 4th set tiebreak (which I was able to see), then this match ALREADY qualifies as a "great" Wimbledon match. Wow!

No, soon as I asked the question, you brought Rafa into it, bizarrely. I'm noticing this in Djokolites: if somebody says that Lithuania is a lovely place for a holiday, the Djokolites start fidgeting, recognising the obvious slight not only on Serbia, but more importantly to Novak, Monte Carlo.

They reply with something like, well, the arse scratcher was knocked out in round one! :snigger

What on earth are you talking about. I am not from Serbia. I've never been there.

And I am not discrediting anything. You are actually, I am saying this is a great Wimbledon with great matches. You are saying this is NOT a great Wimbledon and there are NO great matches so far.

Its not bizarre to bring in Wimbledon 2010. I wanted to point out that this is a subjective standard, and starting a thread like this implies a lot of subjectivity.

You still haven't explained why you took the OP as an attack on Nole.

Do you see any difference between this match and others in the tourney? This one is making them both dig deep and they're both finding it. It's a great match. Not just one great performance...

I didnt! I never said it was an attack on Nole.

Yes I see a difference. But that doesnt make others not great. This is also a semi mind you.

Go back to your initial reply, bringing Nadal into it, incomprehensibly.

Anyway, think we can both agree on this one, both players giving us a fabulous afternoon, eh? :)

Any good matches today lol? WOW!

We got a keeper! Truly huge hitting here, great defence, and magnificence under pressure. Really enjoyed it. I hope JJ isn't too frazzled by the wait and we get a great match next...
