boo hiss to the stats..

the reality is the fedster did what he had to do, I managed to see most of the match, a few crisp forehands, bh slices, a bit o serve n volley, not too many bh shanks etc.............

Awful stats alright for Fed yesterday.

First serve % isn't great, and second serve points won could be better, but I don't think they're awful, do you? :

statsssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssss.png

just three aces (all in the first set), despite such a low first serve %age (meaning that he actually went for something on those first attempts), 2 DFs; just 50% winning on 2nd serves against a guy ranked #166? that's some bad serving for a defending wimby champ on grass, if you ask me.

that said, it doesn't mean a whole lot of course. as JLLB said - he did what he had to, and that's win. we'll see more tomorrow at noon (if anyone has a chance to watch, that is).

in other news: Haas took down the fabled Great Unseeded Hope in straights. it's really too bad that Gulbis' game just can't keep up with his talk.

Order of Play tomorrow, starting at noon:
Federer (1) v Zverev (WC)
F Mayer (8) v Gasquet (2)
Haas (3) v Monfils
Kohlschreiber (6) v Youzhny

some great matchups: Youzhny with a chance to take revenge for his horrible RG exit, even though it's against a different 1hbh german. F Mayer v Gasquet, the matchup between the most elegant bh and the most unelegant fh. Fed's opponent could actually make for a fun match as well: big, russian born Leftie who actually likes to play S&V! and of course, Haas v Monfils, probably the match of the day.

Some nice matches tomorrow alright. I'd especially love to see Haas v Monfils. Should be exciting. Regarding Fed's stats, I just feel against a low ranked opponent to serve only 3 aces and 58% first serves is poor and DFs. Ok, first match on grass in a year so there's bound to be rust but I'd have preferred less shanks, more aces. Hopefully I'll catch one of his matches on the weekend.

This is a big tournament for Roger. He needs to get the confidence going especially if he gets a tough QF at Wimbledon. Right now I'd heavily favor the big server/hitters he'd see in the QF over him (mainly Berdych and Tsonga).

alright, this is too random, just have to share this: i actually dreamt about Roger's match today - Roger was trailing by a set and a break, something like 2-6, 0-2. and he more or less stopped playing. no swings, just bunted balls back randomly, hardly moved at all... apparently, he felt insulted because the majority of the crowd had left the stands (which happened to look nothing like Halle and exactly like Queens).

wasn't an anxiety dream either, just something like "huh, that's odd".

So let me get this straight, you seriously dream about a QF match at a 250 event between Federer and Micha Zverev? Fascinating stuff. :D When I dream about tennis, it's usually about me playing doubles with Azarenka...and we always end up winning

Well you were apparently just a bit off as Fed struggled to a 6-0 6-0 win. Anyone see the match? It's pretty unbelievable to get double bageled on an extremely fast grass court.

You can relax. Federer won 6-0, 6-0.

Did anyone see it?

EDIT: I see Darth and I posted the same message, at the same time: 7:36 AM.

^ great minds think (and time) alike, i guess. :)
didn't see it either, (un)fortunately(?). Eurosport should have covered it, but gave a re-run of Boom Boom Lisicki's match yesterday. maybe they saw it coming.

no idea what was up in that match. sure, Zverev is ranked in the triple digits, and not by accident... but just like Darth said, that's some very fast grass; and Zverev is a 6'3" lefty, who actually loves his serve and volley. no idea how that one went down. i watched the score, what a strange sight that was - i think he was trailing in every single game, always went down 0-30, 15-40 etc. he actually fared "better" when defending break points (saving 40%) than in overall points - he made only about 33% of the points on his own serve. no news about an injury either. but one write-up mentions "lack of concentration" - apparently, he once wanted to change sides at 30-40, and when Fed had a set point, he walked back to the bench even during the point(?!).

strange days. 39 minutes. i hope Fed found someone else to get some hitting practice afterwards. got to think there must've been at least a handful of fellas in the crowd, juniors or some old tennis coaches, who could've given him a better workout.

and to think this was in front of a german crowd. Fed's shortest win ever (i hope it'd be his shortest match ever as well). makes you wonder - wouldn't Fed at least give him and the audience a mercy game? ;) btw, if Haas wins, Fed will play three germans in a row.

on the other side of the draw, Gasquet is up a set v Florian "awkward" Mayer, second set is close.

Have a sore back so took a day off and missed Fed's match but he must've been listening to some of the flak he's been receiving 'cos a double bagel is more WTA than ATP. Impressive!

Gasquet takes the second set in the tie-break. 6-3, 7-6. funny that 2/4 matches today are GER v FRA.

I saw some of the Fed match. The kid has a S/V game, but no one explained to him that he can't approach the net on any shot. :nono Most of his net approaches ended in the net as he isn't as quick, agile or proficient a volleyer as he needed to be. Fed moved pretty well and served well.

The facial expressions from Monfils are gas. Looks like Snoop Dogg on crack.

Commentator was saying with a serving performance like this no one will want to face Monfils. Uh, read the headlines, he's not playing. A true shame really.

Tommy drops the opening set breaker.

What is that in La Monf's head?

Haas up a break in the second. looks like this one's headed to a decider - at 7-6, 3-5, they've already played almost four times the number of games that Roger had.

What is Monf doing? On some silly trick shot overhead, Tommy breaks and levels the match 6-3. He also will serve first in the decider.

La Monf is down and slow to get up.

It looks like he's ok, but he's in a hole. Down 5-2 in the final set

Tommy played brilliantly in the final set. La Monf mounts a spirited comeback, but comes up short. I can't believe this guy is sliding around like this is a clay court.

Tommy serves out the match 6-7 6-3 6-3. Fantastic job for the old guy. :p
