^ well, the dream team's run is already over, in straights. didn't get to watch anything, unfortunately. :)

They bite the dust, mainly due to their opponents, Melzer - Petzschner are Wimbledon champions in doubles.
But, the first seed Qureshi - Rojer go down to the Nishikori - Raonic team, who are the leaders of the new generation in singles. Encouraging to see them playing doubles, to improve their net skills.

Doh. Didn't see it either. I've always liked Petzschner's game on grass and surprised he hasn't done better there. Mind you if it wasn't for some dirty MTOs in 2010 he most likely would.
Saw some of it on TTC. Haas lost his serve a few times and they were just outsmarted by a better doubs team.

P.S. Please don't start an MTO debate in this thread.

^ thanks. i saw some very minor "highlights", actually more like lowlights, Fed and Haas taking swings on the same balls, or not switching sides when they should have. so it really was just them teaming up for fun and clearly having no real coordination as a team. might have also been a favor to the tournament, one that surely paid off.

Great and easy win for Monfils over Raonic, 6-4 6-2.

^ great to see that Monf's comeback is more than just RG.

that said, WTF Raonic? and i'm not asking whether you think he's going to London at the end of the year.

What's up with Raonic? he seems to be treading water. Monfils looks like he's enjoying himself lately, never really warmed to the guy - same way I never warmed to Leconte, something flakey and trying-too-hard about both of them - but I'm glad he's playing well...

Yeah surely a guy with Raonic's serve on grass shouldn't lose a set 6-2. That said, I've seen days where his serving is pure crap. Must check out the stats from that match later when I get home. I'm impressed with Monfils though as you say, not just doing well on clay.

I just watched Janowicz upset by a LL Miza Basic from Bosnia, who is ranked 240 and is 21y old.
7-6, 3-6, 7-6. While i am upset that Jerzy lost, I have to say only good things about his opponent today.
He has an outstanding ROS, getting his raquet on many first serves on Jerzy's, very solid and compact groundstrokes and has a cool head, converting on his BP and his first MP, when he needed.
I hope to see him more in the future.

well, i guess someone's quarter just opened up nicely.

anyway, so two of the big future hopes lost matches that they probably shouldn't have lost (at least not like that) - great that Basic played well, but he's still a LL. means people in the qualifiers actually managed to beat him, yet JJ couldn't. still, i'd like to see some clips of that one - very curious about his game on grass. didn't see any of his Wimbledon run last year, tbh.

also, fun fact: JJ actually won a grass tournament in Halle before. doubles, in ITF juniors.

Before I will conclude anything about Milos's lack of good results, I will wait to see how the coaching change will impact his game. Ivan was a very good HC player, so he will understand better Milos's capabilities as well as weaknesses, I think. I will wait a few months before reassessing his current stage.

^ was just about to post this. stunner, really. hope he and his family are fine - what could make a resurgent player skip Wimbledon, and announce it while he's still in a tournament? real strange. unpredictable indeed, isabelle.

^ did you see the rest? i only saw a quick summary, and was shocked. Fed was broken from 5-2, btw, but broke back for the set. 6-3, 6-3. supposably, it was a shank-fest, with Stebe just being the worse offender today - and that was swiss television commenting on the match.

i know, it's a first match on grass, doesn't mean a lot. still - serve stats are also frightening. 1st srv percentage in the fifties, sub 50% conversion rate on 2nd serves, 3 aces, none in the second. on Grass. against a german guy with a wild card. the good news is that with JJ out, he'll have another opponent ranked in the triple digits for the quarters.

fun fact: while it was their first match on tour, Stebe actually got invited over to Dubai for a training week one day.

today's Order of Play, starting at 12.00:

P. Kohlschreiber (GER) vs. T. Kamke (GER)

J. Melzer (AUT) vs. R. Gasquet (FRA)

F. Mayer (GER) vs. L. Mayer (ARG)

not before 5.30:
T. Haas (GER) vs. E. Gulbis (LAT)

doubles:
Huey/Inglot vs. Bracciali/Erlich
not before 2.00: Nishikori/Raonic vs. Kohlschreiber/Youzhny
Melzer/Petzschner vs. Knowle/Tecau

so we got another all german matchup, with Kohli the heavy favorite. like Melzer, he's in double(s) duty today, and they're giving them relatively little rest. must say that the Kei/Milos v Kohli/the Doctor is a very intriguing match-up for doubles.

of course, the match of the day is Haas v Gulbis. will experience prevail here? tbh, i hope so.

Melzer v Gasquet could be sad, if Richie bothers to show up and play. Juergen barely got through the first round in three tight sets and over two hours, against an Italian ranked in the 300s! i honestly don't know why he even bothers anymore. he should seriously consider specializing in doubles (like fellow Austrian Knowle, whom he'll meet today); there might even be a couple more Slam titles in it for him.

I had to leave, so I did not see the rest. Good thing, it seems.

Lefties always get an invitation from Roger for training , no? ;)

I'll try to find the reason why but sure, that's very strange
This la Monf is one of a kind...I wouldn't like to be his GF....too unpredictable for me
Richie is in quarter by the way, I'ld like him to win the title

Quite possible that Monfils is skipping grass to avoid injuries as his recent interview said he finds it hard to stop on grass given his crazy athletic game. Just a hunch but he's injured so often maybe he thinks it's a wise move to save himself for the rest of the season.

''I was happy, I was having fun,'' Monfils said. ''Grass is not natural for me, but I am getting better. I have to focus on not falling, not injuring myself. I cannot take off as fast as I want to and I have problems braking. But I was comfortable today, I was leading all the time.''

He apparently jumped over the net as his momentum carried him over in his last match. Easy to hurt yourself doing things like that. He's nuts but fun to watch.

First serve % isn't great, and second serve points won could be better, but I don't think they're awful, do you? :
