Only 10 more months to the new season :(

I assume all the posters on this thread have seen the finale by now and I was curious as to how you rate the seasons from best to worst.

I got 4,1,3,2 in that order. I've been rewatching season 1 for probably the 4th or 5th time and it's easy to forget how awesome it was with all that's happened since. I think 2 and 3 were definitely quite a bit slower than 4 and 1, but the battle of Blackwater Bay and the Red Wedding might be the 2 best episodes of the entire show with the latter containing the biggest shock/game changer of the series.

I agree with your list however I think because if the Red Wedding and the Battle of Blackwater plus theon being tortured by Ramsey Bolton, I would say its a dead heat between 1/3 for 2nd

Battle of Blackwater was season 2. I agree that season 3 with the Red Wedding is close to season 1 overall. It also featured Tyrion's wedding and a whole lot of great father-son-daughter chats with the Lannisters :)

Season 1 was absolutely amazing. Immediately, you recognize a certain different "feel" about the show. Pretty astonishing how different and unexpected things turned out when you go back and watch and revisit the expectations you had back in season 1.

RE: Game of Thrones

One interesting thing about the Blackwater episode is that I always figured somehow the major characters would survive (Tyrion, Cersei, Joffrey, etc.) even after season 1 because that is just the way these shows usually go. That time it was the case but one year later a certain wedding showed that you should never assume anything when it comes to GOT.

The amazing thing about this show is, no matter how many main characters get killed off, it doesn't really lose its structure.

SPOILER ALERT:

Viserys, Khal Drogo, King Robert, Ned Stark, Catelyn Stark, Rob Stark, Joffrey, Tywin, etc... all dead. And while some have left a void, they're not really missed in the sense that "oh this show is really struggling without character X." Some are missed because they're awesome characters, but it never really affected the quality of the show.

Having not read the books, I do wonder whether the death of Joffrey and Tywin will make things in King's Landing a bit less interesting (not in terms of events). Both were pretty terrific characters, for better or worse.

RE: Game of Thrones

SPOILER ALERT:

I think they made Tywin a bigger character in the show than the books and part of that is the dynamic between him and his children (who are all bigger characters in the books and the show). I also think they made Tywin a little more sinister and Tyrion a little more good on the show compared to the books but others might not agree.

I too wonder how King's Landing will be now, it will definitely be a different feel without Tywin. And Tyrion will likely not be in King's Landing anytime soon if ever.

Even this show/book series has to have a climax and it might have been season 4/book 3 & 4...but we will find out.

RE: Game of Thrones

Lots of great characters in this story. I actually like a bunch of them for different reasons...

Bronn and The Hound are two of my favourite non-leading characters - love the dry sense of humour and pragmatism.

Ned Stark was kind of the honourable man you'd respect and follow. One of the few with any moral values. That's largely why he's dead.

The three Lannister fellas - Tywin, Tyrion and Jaime. Great characters.

Lord Baelish - calculating pantomime villain but pulling a lot of the strings.

I also Like Ygritte, Melisindre and Deanerys for reasons that don't need to be explained.

Cersei and Joffrey are/were superb - but everyone loves to hate them.

RE: Game of Thrones

Just dropping in to say I've finally started watching it. I'm currently on the eighth episode of the first season ("The Pointy End").

I've purposely avoided learning anything about it, so I have no idea what's coming next. I'll come back when I've finished in order to avoid any spoilers.

^ Word of advice Tented, do not watch youtube videos about it. Damn near every scene of the show is on there and the comments are full of spoilers from book readers. Also, don't google anything about the show until you are caught up (which will likely be 2 weeks because you won't be able to stop watching).

RE: Game of Thrones

Since we are likely all suffering withdrawals by now I was curious what everyone's favorite scenes from the show are. As mentioned above you can find almost any scene on Youtube and suffice to say I've re-watched a fair share of the good ones.

Naturally these are all SPOILERS for those who haven't watched:

I will start it off with Season 1 (just a couple, there are plenty to choose from):

Jaime vs. Ned

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TwRix1p9sDY

Tyion's hilarious speech and trial by combat with Bronn in the Vale

The Mountain vs. the Hound

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VaIwtO6VWCU

First real glimpse of how crazy the Mountain is as he takes on his younger brother. The Mountain was recast twice with the last one being the 2nd strongest man in the world (6'9 and over 400lbs). This one was well cast as well, over 7 feet tall, huge and nasty looking

Tywin and Tyrion conversation after Jaime is captured

A good example of the complicated father-son relationship.

RE: Game of Thrones

I’ve finished watching all four seasons. In a way, it turned out to be the ideal series to binge-watch. Its epic proportions were almost overwhelming. At the same time, because it is so massive, it was hard to take it all in so quickly. There’s no doubt I’ll have to watch it again, at a slower pace, before the next season begins — but I look forward to it.

There are so many great aspects, beginning with the casting. Superb job, especially the children and adolescents. Can you imagine how many auditions they had to go through to find kids who could handle this material? It’s easy to hire Sean Bean. You know exactly what you’re going to get. But finding a young girl to play Arya, for example, must have been tough, but she’s perfect.

Also, it’s a nice mix of familiar and new faces (new to me, at least ). I’ve seen Peter Dinklage, Lena Headey, Charles Dance, etc. many times, but not people like Kit Harington (Jon Snow), Michelle Fairley (Catelyn Stark), or Alfie Allen (Theon Greyjoy).

This excellence in casting presents its own huge problem: killing off the characters. I found myself becoming attached to certain people, only to see them beheaded a few episodes later. Very annoying. I figured Sean Bean would only be in it for a limited time, so his death wasn’t a surprise, but the Red Wedding! This could have only happened because Martin wrote it this way first. HBO producers would never have thought, “Hey, I know — let’s kill off multiple main characters at once!”

The production quality is stunning. According to Wikipedia, “the average episode has a budget of US$6 million, which is two-to-three times more than a typical network or cable series costs per episode.” HBO is spending about $60 million a year on this. That’s an amazing number for television.

The worst part? Waiting until next year for new episodes.

Well, it tops my favourite series list... and I never thought anything would top the Sopranos, but GOT surpasses it in the britbox TV library. Like you, I kind of fell into it by continuous recommendation and once you begin... you can' get enough of it. In some ways, it steps out of the box because favourite characters are killed off regularly... and in a ruthless fashion!

I think you'd appreciate the acting more if you read the books. Even the bland characters such as Sansa are played very well.

Tops mine as well. I'd probably put Breaking Bad 2nd. It's brilliance is that there are so many characters and most of them are interesting and fairly important. Even when a few get "offed" out of nowhere the show carries on and does it quite well.

Do you mean "appreciate the acting even more"? Because I love the actors.

Yep
