This is a very exclusive event, 470 points but $471,841 goes to the winner.

I don't understand all the arguments about ladies missing this to do that...
That does not make sense, the Ladies are suppose to work as this is their job, this is a very exclusive event, Genie had to play qualifying! Anyone missing it other than a valid reason, would be unwise!

Any body know why a player in the top 20 had to qualify?

I don't think I've ever seen that before.

You should see the qualifying draw:
http://www.wtatennis.com/SEWTATour-Archive/posting/2014/718/QS.pdf

It was tougher than the main draw in Rio

As for why Genie had to play qualifying, the last direct acceptance was Lucie who was ranked 27th.
So, I don't know, wish ozza was here to answer that.

Because it's a very strong field.

I can only guess that Genie signed up too late for the event after other players were promised a place in R1. She is ranked 18 and had priority on i.e. Kanepi.

Oh, its really simple.
Simona can only add 190 ranking points in this event and only if she wins it. Even losing the final will not give her worthy points. She also has to beat Serena to do that...
So, only the money is worth playing for, but is it really?... She earned enough so far and she can allow herself to see the "big picture". In the big picture, if she misses IW, Miami, rest of season :puzzled because of an injury then she lost money just because she played too much tennis in Dubai. She played 8 hard matches in only 12 days. Its too much. In the long run, an injury will cost her money. She doesn't starve at the moment...
So... imo she should not play in Dubai. Simona is like a shark now but sharks can get injured too.
Allez Alize ! Save Simona from herself ;)

If she is talking about the hype directed towards her since

her injury win vs Serena, all she has to do is keep playing

like she is. The " spotlight " will go out soon

Si,
Winning two premier level events of this magnitude in 2 weeks is as good as winning a slam, me thinks, may be even tougher.
It would sure give Simona bragging rights.
This is the kinda event the top seed rarely wins! But of course it would be unwise to bet against Serena.... Makarova will be after her tomorrow.

Yea, when she goes past this mental phase I will have to respect her as a player even if I don't want to ;)

I don't care about this event. As a fan I want to keep my player HEALTHY.
Injury now before two mandatory events is a disaster.
If she is doing well in IW and/or Miami she may pass sugarova in the rankings !
Simona has only 50 and 80 points to defend in the USA events! She should "destroy" that field, not the Dubai field...
I get your point of view as a neutral fan but I am not neutral :)
