Well, losses happen.

First time she's lost before the final of a tour event or lost in straight sets since Cincinnati in 2012.

Didn't watch but one thing that occurred to me was maybe Serena wanted to let this be Venus' moment by allowing her the chance to win a title to perk her confidence up. But who knows. Reading the comments it seems Serena played poorly and Cornet played really well.

The amazing life of the WTA. To think that this Cornet lost R1 in Doha a week ago to Voegele ranked #47 :puzzled
Always expect the unexpected in women tennis :D

Serena looked very rusty and even over weight in this event. Maybe she also needs a wake up call.
She was injured after AUS open,no? I forgot that. Maybe thats why she wasnt ready for Dubai.

OMG, stop with the Serena wanted to give Venus a shot at the trophy talk. Serena is a competitive athlete that always wants the win no matter who is on the other side.

Even if it's her sister who's been struggling for years and who she'd like to see put her career back on track, knowing how much a title win would mean to her. Like I said, it's likely Serena just lost and Cornet played great but maybe Serena didn't try as hard as she could either.

That did cross my mind as well, very lackluster performance, but, in the end we'll never know.

Just terrible footwork, and Cornet was very tenacious, those two things don't make for a positive outcome.

So people don't forget, she has no less tournament wins then she had at this point last year.

Serena did look lethargic to me and her second serve let her down.
Congrats to Alize she did play well and deserved her win.

Congratulations to Vee...what a tournament Vee is having.
Hopefully she can continue this great form in the final against Alize.

Yup, just extra points gained from a wildcard and semis is a decent enough amount of points when joining the tournament at the last minute all things considered.

Only saw part of the first set, but she was outplayed for the most part. I kind of find it hard to believe Serena would come all the way to the Middle East as a WC to lose in SF so Venus can have an opportunity at a title. Especially since there's no guarantee Venus will win tomorrow (although I must be honest, I like her chances better against Alize than against Serena).

Serena needed match play before her next tournament which is Miami.

Serena did not know Venus would do this good.

The new coach is not with Woz at this tournament. He will coach at Indian Wells, but her dad is coaching her here. She is playing with more confidence so I assume she must be feeling comfortable. This might get them thinking that they do not need a coach. I am not saying I agree. Woz does need someone other than her dad, but I would not be surprised if this coach does not last long.

I don't know why you keep saying this. Michael Mortensen has been there all the time in Dubai. He's the technical coach and together they put down a tactic before every match and Piotr is the one who is coaching on court. I actually think that this combination works and we saw many things proving that yesterday. If you didn't see the match use my link on page 8. Once again the new coach is there and coaching. And if you look in the players box he is sitting next to Piotr.

I must have misunderstood this article, which says her dad is coaching.
