Berdych was lucky to win that first set. He escaped a set point in the tiebreak at 5-6 to take it 9-7. He's not playing well though. Bolelli is doing well at frustrating Berdych and not letting him play his game. I'm surprised Bolelli didn't win that set.

Berdych struggled vs. Bolelli, escaping a set point in the first, dropping the second set before serving up a bagel in the third. Berdych wins 7-6(7), 5-7, 6-0 and advances to the quarterfinals and will meet Sergiy Stakhovsky. Berdych leads the H2H 3-0. The last meeting was in Dubai last year and Berdych won 2 and 1.

Today's win was also Berdych's 500th tour win! Congrats! :clap

And what a heartbreaker for Baghdatis. He was deadlocked with 4-6, 6-3, 6-6 (4-4) when he had to retire with cramps. That's gotta hurt.

I always felt that, on pure talent alone, Verdasco was the second most talented Spaniard of the last couple generations, but he just didn't seem to have the mental game.

I'd take Juan Carlos Ferrero over him since we're including that generation, as far as talent goes (and results obviously, but that wasn't your point). Verdasco vs. Ferrer is iffy for me. If both were at their best, I agree, Verdasco is capable of the "higher highs." That forehand is easily one of the best on tour when it clicks and the combination of being devastating as a rally shot and as a 100 mph point-ender can be unplayable. He's also a great athlete and a fine mover in his own right. But he has too many weaknesses, such as a flaky backhand, inconsistent serve, and generally erratic play. He was never able to build on his 2009 AO run where he looked that he was going to be at least a consistent top 10 player for the next few years.
