Goodluck everyone! I missed it :( wahh

I think Novak will be #1 ... unfortunately ... lol.

Already on his way; no losses all fall and winter! He's already taken exhibition in Abu Dhabi and was awarded ITF award for the season along with Serena!

None which means anything towards his 2014 points. In fact, as you said above, these are all more points to defend! ;) :p

RE: CONTEST: Who will be the ATP 2014 Year End top 10 players?

Took me a while to find this thread. Not sure why it was unstickied. I think it would be nice to sticky it again as I think it would provoke good discussion as the year goes on. Thanks.

At any rate, here are the current Top 10 in the Race to London so far...

Code:
1 Wawrinka, Stanislas (SUI) 2,250
2 Nadal, Rafael (ESP) 1,450
3 Federer, Roger (SUI) 870
4 Berdych, Tomas (CZE) 795
5 Djokovic, Novak (SRB) 510
6 Ferrer, David (ESP) 470
7 Dimitrov, Grigor (BUL) 380
7 Murray, Andy (GBR) 380
9 Del Potro, Juan Martin (ARG) 295
10 Bautista Agut, Roberto (ESP) 270

Well, Ironman Stan Wawinka is definitely the surprise here. But as I said in my review, if he could get a win over a top player to bolster his confidence, he could get into the top 5. Well he got two top player wins in a major, and stands alone at the top for now. Amazing Stan.

RE: CONTEST: Who will be the ATP 2014 Year End top 10 players?

Again, could someone please make this thread a sticky? Or at least please tell me why it cannot or should not be made as such? Thank you.

At any rate, here are the current Top 11 (over 3000 pts) in the Race to London so far:
Code:
01. 9,010 Novak Djokovic (SRB)
02. 8,020 Roger Federer (SUI)
03. 6,745 Rafael Nadal (ESP)
04. 4,805 Stan Wawrinka (SUI)
05. 4,265 Kei Nishikori (JPN)
06. 3,990 Marin Cilic (CRO)
07. 3,945 Tomas Berdych (CZE)
08. 3,750 Milos Raonic (CAN)
09. 3,715 David Ferrer (ESP)
10. 3,680 Andy Murray (GBR)
11. 3,450 Grigor Dimitrov (BUL)

Some shocks, some surprises, final positioning yet to be decided. In fact, I think all positions except Nadal are in some doubt at this point. Of course injuries and other events have and may yet influence the results.

Here are the current standings in the Top 10 contest based on the current Race Rankings.
Only 15 points separate the top from the bottom. So good job.

Welcome back, masterclass! I was wondering where you were.

And thanks for displaying how shamefully poor I was doing. What's the prize for the winner? :)

Thank you Kieran.

It's not shamefully poor, yet.. :) It's very close, only 15 points, from you (or me ;) ) to the top ones, and the positions can easily change in the next 3 weeks.

Look, nobody had Marin Cilic. :puzzled He's not even in the chart.

Prize might be a certificate of some kind. Baron Britbox and I never got around to discussing that.
I guess it needs to happen pretty soon.

RE: CONTEST: Who will be the ATP 2014 Year End top 10 players?

Contest Standings updated as of today (yesterday's results) in OP - Post #1.

There have been several changes near the top.
Herios has edged to a slight lead with 55 points.

Still only 20 points separating everyone.
This might not be decided until after Davis Cup.

RE: CONTEST: Who will be the ATP 2014 Year End top 10 players?

Contest standings updated today - 27 Oct 2014. (see post #1)

Still 20 points separates the top from the bottom scores, but the names are different.

1972Murat and GameSetAndMath lead with 55 points edging out a group of 5 at 50 points including 10sfan, El Dude, kskate2, Riotbeard and Srini.

Paris-Bercy Paribas Masters next. Much can change with players so close between 4-10. Less than 1000 points separate them, with Stan 4th at 4805, Raonic 10th with 3840. Dimitrov in 11th still has a chance with 3555.

Tsonga in 12th is now out of the running for the 10th slot with only 2650.

Good luck!

Masterclass -

I noticed you began this thread exactly one year ago today. Should we have another contest for 2015? Despite the fact that I'm in (literally) last place, I think it's worth doing again. :)

RE: CONTEST: Who will be the ATP 2014 Year End top 10 players?

Yes, sure, I'll do it again gladly. But as far as timing goes... last year was the inaugural and I took a little liberty starting it early.

If you don't mind, I'll wait just a bit longer this year, and start the new thread after the last tournament of 2014 ends - Davis Cup Final. This will still give well over a month before the 2015 tournament schedule begins.

In the meantime, why is this thread again no longer a sticky?

Edit: Thanks for making it a sticky again! :)

Post #1 updated with these standings as of today, Monday 3rd November, 2014.

(right click and view image to make it bigger)

Contest tightens up with all participants within 15 points (50 - 35).

The Top 10 players are locked in. Only the positions can change now.

Position #3 (Nadal) is locked in.

Positions #1 (Djokovic) and #2 (Federer) can only possibly change with each other.

Positions #4 (Wawrinka) to #10 (Ferrer)* are so close, some 850 points separating them, that they could all change with each other, depending on the results of the two remaining tournaments, the World Tour Finals and Davis Cup Final.

*Ferrer is 1st alternate, so if anyone is injured, he still has a chance to pick up points.

If so many people are so close, then it probably indicates that you need to change your scoring scheme so that it can differentiate the wheat from the chaff better.

^ might be an idea to give some points for the folks that are close with their predictions. ie giving points for predicting a no 1 finish for Roger when he will become second.

Do any of us Rafa fans have a protected ranking in this game? Or maybe - a good idea - a two year ranking? :popcorn

Agreed. You will see a change applied in next year's contest. I don't think I should apply it to this year's after the fact as it were.

Yeah, I like it.. but it would be too self-serving for this year. ;)

Hey, I feel for you, I predicted Rafa higher thinking he could at least win more than 10 matches after Roland Garros, but he only played 12 and won 7, so my second place prediction for him was a fail. The good news for him is that he only dropped to 3rd having again amassed a lot of points through RG, combined with Stan and some others under-performing the rest of the year as well.

The predictions for this contest are made so far in advance, so who knows who will be healthy and who will not? Look at poor Juan Martin Del Potro. Everyone expected him to do well, and his injury puts him close to #200 at the end of the year.

I'll think about allowing use of alternates in the next contest for injured or similarly challanged players.

This is pretty much settled, right? Unless Nishikori wins the WTF, the year-end rankings are set.

And now we know that won't happen.
