I agree with Murat for first 3...I don't belive Murray comeback will be like from Nadal.

1-Djokovic
2-Nadal
3-Delpo

Maybe Delpo will gain to 2nd. For others, its so relative. They are like ballast.

I was waiting for someone to be bold and say Roger might drop out of the top 10! Some couldn't even let him go befow 5! Big Federer fan here, but this year was awful and I can't see it getting much better! He's tired, has been dealing with back issues, and fooling around with his racket only shows his lack of confidence in his present game! This was a relatively bad year for Nole, so I see him popping back up to #1 by the FO easily! Rafa has too many points to defend and typically falls off after a tough but rewarding season! I can only be sure about the top 3! The rest is a crapshoot:

1) Nole
2) Rafa
3) Delpo

We have Murray after surgery, Ferrer, & Berdych, then fillers are Haas, Raonic, Warwrinka, and Janowicz! I guess I'll be the 1st that has Roger falling out of the top 10! Someone's gotta do it; sooner or later!  :cry

I think you're judging Federer against his own standards rather than other players standards a little too much Fiero. Fed has had a terrible year by his standards only. Wawrinka had a good year... by Wawrinka standards. Who's had the better year on an absolute level? Federer. His year has only been bettered by 5 other players. Barring serious injury I doubt he falls out of the Top 10... largely because he's capable on all surfaces.

I have to say I'm surprised at how low some posters think Andy's ranking will be at the end of 2014. He can gain a lot of points next year. He missed most of the clay season and he hasn't played on the tour since the US Open. His surgery has been a success and he's in Miami right now for his training block. He's moving well, hitting the ball well and is desperate to get back to competitive tennis. The back pain that he's struggled with these past 18 months is gone - for good I hope. I personally don't see Andy finishing lower than 3 next year.

Also, if we're talking about the End of Year rankings in 2014, defending points means absolutely nothing. They'll end up with the rank at the close of play based on what they did in 2014 alone.

I get the idea that some want to see how Andy returns after surgery. I have him at #3, because I think he'll come back fit. But you make a good point about how many places in the calendar that he has free points to gain. During much of the clay season and the end of the year, he'll be playing with house money.

Agreed, there is no reason to think he will finish lower than 3. Chances are he WILL finish 3 unless he makes serious improvements on clay. He can play Nole and Rafa fairly even the rest of the year but on clay they figure to gain way more points than Murray. I for one will be happy to see him back ready to go. It will make things much more interesting.

I keep scratching my head as well, why this "defending points" is brought into discussion?
The end result of the ranking 1 year from now will depend only on what each player will earn next year. Or has the 2 year ranking theory championed by Rafa has been put in place and I missed the memo;)

This is where it gets squirrelly for me. I understand the 52-week rolling ranking, and I understand the points race based purely on the year. Has there ever been a circumstance where the player ranked #1, based on the rolling ranking, was different from the year-end #1, based purely on the year's accumulation of points?

RE: CONTEST: Who will be the ATP 2014 Year End top 10 players?

Hmm, not sure I'm understanding you correctly, Moxie.

Strictly speaking, by definition, the Year End #1 is the player who leads the ATP World Rankings list (rolling 52 week rankings) after the last tournament of the calendar year.

Nadal got the award for Year End #1 once he won enough points at the World Tour Finals to ensure that he earned enough to overcome whatever Djokovic could earn at the Davis Cup Final.

Points for Year End #1 equal World Ranking points leader points following the last tournament of the year.
Points for Year End #1 do not necessarily equal "ATP Race to London" points.

The "ATP Race to London" points include points from valid tournaments after the World Tour Finals of the previous year (e.g. 2012), such as the Davis Cup Final, and any Challengers or Futures, plus all valid points earned in 2013 up to and including the last regular season tournament prior to the World Tour Finals. So technically, the 2013 Race to London is over and points are what they are prior to the 2013 World Tour Finals. After the 2013 World Tour Finals, the 2014 ATP Race begins.

I believe the ATP web site is a bit misleading in this regard, as they have not frozen the calendar setting, and are including the 2013 World Tour Finals points in the 2013 Race points, which is not correct according to the rules. But maybe they are doing as a convenience so people can see the points for this year only. The actual final total Race points for 2013 are those that were reflected for the week of 4 Nov, 2013.

In the ATP World Rankings (rolling 52 week rankings), points are always for the previous 52 weeks, except that the previous year's World Tour Finals are dropped on the Monday after the last regular season tournament (Paris) prior to the World Tour Finals.

If you look at the ATP website now, you will see that the 2013 Race list = World Rankings list because the World Tour Finals are included in the Race points. But the points from this year's 2013 Davis Cup final and any Challengers and Futures till the end of the year, will officially go on next year's (2014) Race to London, not this year's race. I assume that after Jan 1, 2014, the ATP web site will show the 2014 Race to London, and include the Davis Cup Final points (and late Challenger/Futures) earned in late 2013.

I hope I didn't make things more confusing :)

Respectfully,
masterclass

I personally really hope Tommy Haas makes top 10 again in 2014 if only for a few weeks. What an achievement it would be. And he's not far off it points wise.

Problem with Tommy Haas is that he plays in way too many tournaments and spreads
himself too thin. With proper scheduling, he could have even made it into WTF last year.

Well we can say Haas is playing too much or we can look it as he's getting out there while he can! At his age, he's going to break down and the next time it'll be the end more than likely! I say Roger should cut back more on his schedule, esp. skipping clay events altogether, but like Haas, the end is close so he doesn't want to miss out on any opportunities! You lose in the end either way IMO unless you're more single-minded about taking 1 or 2 more majors like Roger! Haas has no real chance to take anything major so he might as well play as much as possible while he can!

Good point, Fiero! Got to play while they can - they'll be retired long enough...

Here is my first cut.

1. Djokovic
2. Nadal
3. Del Potro
4. Federer
5. Murray
6. Ferrer
7. Tsonga
8. Wawrinka
9. Berdych
10. Raonic

Disclaimer: No, I don't like Milos. But, I do think that he will make it to Top 10 next year.

I think JJ quickly ascended as his game is very different from that of others and people
did not know what to expect. Once he became a known commodity, people have figured
out how to handle him. While he may make it to top 10 someday, he needs more time
to mature.

That kind of strategy is good for Davydenkos of the world, who see the tournaments
only as a way of making money. I think Haas has much more class to view like that.
I agree that they need to make money and feed their families etc. But, you get more
money by going farther in a few tournaments, then getting flamed out early in
many tournaments. Even though he may not win a major, he could have gotten
entry into WTF by picking and choosing his tournaments in 2013. He was almost there.
