Yes it was quite the beatdown. Bg5 was pretty weak from Aronian but it's tough when your opponent can punish mistakes that easily.

Caruana ended up winning the last 2 games and took the tournament. He did lose to Carlsen but still another good result for him. Ding didn't play after his accident which is no surprise. Hopefully he gets better quick.

Even though he lost to Carlsen, it's really good to see Caruana in such great form. That's his third tournament won this year, all of which were huge, and he had a great showing at the US championships, and the only reason he finished second is because he made the mistake of declining a draw in a game he ended up losing. Still a sizable underdog vs. Magnus but definitely a worthy challenger, and a way more interesting one than Sergei IMO.

impressive win by Carlsen against Navara today. He refused to play into repetition, took a risk and it paid off. I'm assuming he did this because it was Navara. I imagine if he had tried that against a Caruana, Anand, Giri, Karjakin or Kramnik it would have been suicidal

It was a nice win. Navarra was a little better after Carlsen's sacrifice but he was under constant pressure and eventually cracked.

A couple nice tournaments going on between Biel and Dortmund.

MVL-Carlsen is incredibly interesting for a double rook ending.

yes it is. Those connected passed pawns look like sealing it for Magnus

Yes, it's going to be tough for MVL to hold this. Would take a bad blunder from Magnus to allow a repetition or worse and picking off one of those passers without getting mated looks unlikely.

I wonder why they have this Nico Georgiadis there? He isn't even Norwegian... anyways he's up against Svidler. 41. Rxf3 almost looks like a perpetual but after gxf3, Qxf3 there is Qg6 or Nf6 too which looks better.

They're blitzing out moves in MVL-Carlsen and doesn't seem to be good ones for the latter. Surprised he pushed the d pawn that quickly, this may be a draw after all.

Greek Swiss lamb isn't going down without a fight. All things considered he did well to complicate things with Bxf3. He was facing a slow but sure death without it.
