Yeah, match points are more stressful;)

He was terrible with this when he was younger....come on...he improved a lot, don't you think?

I actually count them when I watch him...very rarely goes over 10 bounces. Watch it closely next time, Front, and you'll see.

Sometimes I get afraid for him and when he is getting his 8th bounce I start saying...come on Nole...today, please, he is going to warn you!!.:laydownlaughing:snicker

It's about time that jerk withdrawn for Nadal matches. He should put more attention to those ones which smash the racquets, insulting the crowd, kicking the adds around the court and after every point they walk in slow motion before the serve, all those things takes a lot more seconds :( :cover

God forbid the chair ump does his job and calls Rafa for taking forever and a day. Most chair umps do give warnings for smashing racquets and loud cussing. Not sure how that's related. The chair umps shouldn't have to cater to princess Nadal or any other player.

Not only do they give verbal warnings for smashing racquets but players also play a monetary penalty after a match, I believe.

What makes you say that he's a jerk? And what's his enforcement history with guys who smash their racquets, insult the crowd, kick ads, and walk in slow motion? I'm asking because I don't know.

Because he is, you should try to find out about his enforcement history about it, you probably like it because it's 0 below 0 and more with the ones walking slowly between points. It's supposly that the seconds start to count right after to finish every point.....

Okay, then. He's a jerk because you say he is. Regarding his enforcement history...I have no idea. I don't keep tabs of umpires' track records, which is why I asked about his. If he's biased against certain players, or a certain player (Folks), then I'm with you. I'm just asking for you to provide examples, because I'm not the one who's implying that he's biased against Folks. You are.

According to the article in the original post, he is one of the elite umpires, and highly regarded. Of course that would be outside the Nadal camp.

Don't agree with this at all. If the umpire is unfit to umpire then he shouldn't be umpiring at all, not barred from overseeing the matches of individual players.

Carlos penalized F3 and Nole plenty of times....all were deserved, trust me. I think that Berdych few years back told Carlos that he didn't rule a call correctly because Carlos was afraid of Nadal. F3 especially likes to make a scene...he had a blow up with Carlos last year, I can't remember the tournament (I remember F3 lost against a young Frenchman) and Carlos initially didn't want to shake hands with Fabio as he was yelling at him and then he did it anyway. It was weird, and funny to me.:snicker It is human to be upset, but to go to these lengths instead of trying to improve on the things you get penalized for, that is strange.

I was really surprised that they made if public, that's all.

I am sure this kind of things happened before. I think ATP and ITF have different rules regarding a lot of things.:snicker

I don't have a problem with the umps as long as they are consistent and they aren't biased against, or for, certain players...my favorites included! F3 (and everyone else) should get what he deserves.

Exactly. Obviously every Nadal fan so far commented negatively about Bernardes, so maybe they know something we don't. Unless he plays Nole, I don't pay attention to every detail in his match. They might have a history, I am really not sure, but I can't see a valid reason that an extinguished tennis umpire and a top tennis player wouldn't settle this gentlemanly off the court.

He probably would have been removed completely from tennis if he were not a good ump. :puzzled

I've done a little reading, what there is to find, and it basically comes to the Telegraph declaring it to be so, but citing no source. Not even background, unnamed ones. It also bears pointing out that the Telegraph headline is damning to Nadal: "Nadal Makes a Mockery of Rule Book," implying that Rafa had something to do with Bernardes being withdrawn as a potential chair ump for his matches, which we don't even know to be true. So I would caution for a little closer attention to facts and sources before passing a lot of judgement.

The article does say that the ATP, which doesn't control majors, says that, “a number of factors are taken into consideration in the [umpire] selection process, including badge qualifications, nationality, as well as any previous history or incidents”. The article also cites some precedents for the last part. I would think it possible, if it is true, that the ITF may choose not to pressure Nadal with an umpire that he has had a recent run-in with, especially at a tournament as important as Roland Garros.

Players can get frustrated in matches, and sometimes take it out on the chair. That's certainly not novel.
For the record, and @Carol35, I think Carlos Bernardes is an excellent umpire. One of the best, and most genial.

Very well said, Moxie. I don't have a problem with avoiding potential controversies if there is a possibility of that, for whatever reason. Obviously they don't have an umpire officiating a match if one of the players is from the same country, even though they could be perfectly objective.

In my years of watching Bernardes umpiring matches I could not sense that he is deliberately targeting a certain player, on the contrary, he seems to be one of the rare umpires that actually tries to treat all players equally and tries to apply the rules.

So, you think Telegraph is open for a libel suit form Rafa. :puzzled

The only Nadal fan who slagged off Bernardes on this thread was Carol, and others who have commented are Kieran, Broken and me. Kieran was arguing general points about rules and enforcement, Broken made a brief weigh-in on Nadal's timing, and I didn't comment before your post I quoted. I would ask you most sincerely to be more cautious about lumping an entire group into one poster's comments. It's easy to do, thoughtlessly, but thereby generalities are drawn. And you drew one. Please don't paint us all by the same brush, particularly when we don't deserve it.
