.... Date-Krumm could've won by the same score and maybe that would actually have been impressive.

Talking Kimiko, she is giving Lil' Domi all she can handle!

Serena will be playing soon.

Of course:

Serena fought off 3 break chances but the 4th got away.
On serve 3-2 in the first, Serena to Serve.
One break each.

Nice to see two ladies in good form. Petko playing a good game and it seems she's come back stronger than before her latest injury - hope she can stay injury free in 2014. Better 1st serve will improve her gameplay efficiently. Serena a little rusty but did what she came for. She made a spectacular fault missing a netball - hope we see that on youtube - priceless!:laydownlaughing

Results from today can be seen on page 2

Re the last paragraph, people commenting on how she crushed or dominated a nobody is no different than someone sarcastically going wow, she crushed/dominated a nobody. Both are annoying for either party
Bragging about an idol's achievements - how unrealistic they may be - haven't the intention to hurt anyone - Condescending remarks about someone's idol do because the sole purpose of the remark is to hurt her fans - An honorable person would have taken the high road and kept his/her mouth shut or participated in the joy instead :)

It looks like Ashleigh Barty has withdrawn the tournament due to an injury
Twitter about Brisbane Tennis
We're sad to announce that @ashbar96 has withdrawn from #brisbanetennis 2014 with a left adductor tear.

Masha is in the QF now and will play Kaia Kanepi next - I'm sorry for Ashleigh and also for not to see Masha play :(

Pova will dominate over world number 190 next. I will be impressed if she dominates the world number one.

its a domination alright ..the same score Maria dealt serena in the Wimbledon Finals of 2004.. same level of play from Maria and also same level of play from both serena and caroline..

With Serena and maria on course to meet in the semi's, it made me recall that Chris Evert lost 13 straight matches to Martina and finally beat her after that 13th lost.

Maybe this tourney is where maria snaps that losing streak to Rena.

Sad news for Barty. Tough situation for a 17 year old to digest. Hoping for a speedy recovery.

If Kanepi can hold tough mentally, she will give us a good match. If history is any guide, she will succumb to Pova's will.

Mashafan, disparaging remarks about players are not intended to hurt their fans. This is a forum where each of us posts to discuss and debate. Is it possible to discuss and debate without saying anything negative? No. I suggest you stop taking comments about Pova so personally. You will have more fun here if you do.

disparaging
Tending or intending to belittle

So tell me - what is the purpose of disparaging remarks if not to hurt the fan(s) of the player? - Obviously it won't hurt the player herself - When you're at it - tell me also how disparaging remarks enlightens us others about tennis or can spread any joy among tennis fans? - Of course I've to take it personally when someone back trash my favorite - because such a remark says that I'm stupid to enjoy my favorite's win or achievements

Do discuss a player's tennis style - her serve - her forehand - backhand - ability to move - come to the net - her weapons or lack there of - etc but avoid to post remarks with the sole purpose to belittle a tennis player just to make her fans feel stupid

The point is to come here, to a forum about a subject we like, and express our opinions on that subject. It's all light hearted. None of us actually wish her any harm. It's just that to many really close tennis followers Maria isn't all that likable. For people who follow tennis very closely it's been a bit frustrating and honestly kind of sexist that the mainstream media has constantly put players like Maria over someone like Serena or even say Justine Henin or Venus. Maria has won 4 grand slams in the course of 10 years yet during that entire time she's had complete attention of the mainstream media. Why? Because she's a pretty tall blond woman. So we as close tennis fans get frustrated. Why don't they pay more attention to the real champions of the last decade? Because with women it still matters that you fit more the traditional definition of beautiful rather than just being a great champion.

No one is trying to make any fans feel stupid. The simple reality is she played no one good yet. That's not intended to "hurt" anyone, it's just simple observation. That girl she beat (Garcia), sorry "dominated" was ranked world number 69 (kinky). As a Federer fan I didn't exactly jump with joy when he soundly beat Adrian Mannarino as he did at the US Open 'cos look what happened next. He played probably his worst slam match ever, spewing gunk left, right and centre against Robredo who he'd never lost to and didn't even win a set. That's why there's no point jumping with joy when your favourite player beats a nobody. Celebrate wildly when your favourite player scores a decent win over a top player and that includes after an injury comeback.

Mild celebration is fine as it's good for her fans naturally that she won her first match back, but all the talk of her dominating world number 69 is just silliness. Anyway, Happy New Year to everyone here.

So - what you're saying is - because the media makes a fuzz about Masha - rightfully or not - you as fans of other tennis players - like Serena (!!!!!) - Henin or Venus feel free to post disparaging remarks about Masha? - That's your excuse? - To me that sounds insane - You can not blame Masha fans for what media does or not does or express your anger about the media in this forum to hurt her fans or diminish their joy of her accomplishments - Get real my friend - Masha fans have no part in what media find worth to write or echo about

I fully accept that Masha has not played some top 10 player yet - You however posted your remark about her victory vs C. Garcia with the obvious attend to 1) diminish Masha's victory - and 2) take my sherona down to earth - That's something I find low because even for a top player a first victory after 4 months absence after an injury is a good thing - and a victory which is won with 63, 60 is a great thing no matter how low the opponent in the top 100 is ranked - Even a top player can lose a first round match while perfectly healthy like against a 111 ranked player - I just wonder why you could not take the high road and leave Masha fans alone and let them celebrate a Masha victory who's been outta the loop for 4 months as they see fit? - It's not like Masha fans constantly attack your favorite whoever she may be? - right?

I don't care for your example about Federer - Your intend was to hurt my sherona and that was completely unnecessary and only done with ill will - Anyone with a sane mind can see that - But hey - if you wanna find all sorta excuses to ease your conscious - be my guest :)

It's a shame you think this way as there's no intent to hurt anyone. my sherona's silliness was off the richter scale with "first title of the year" and all this silly domination talk. The simple reality is actually beating a nobody means nothing in tennis. You think Andy Murray's double bagel against world number 2129 has him and his fans thinking he's superhuman? Quite the contrary. I'm sure both he and they wish he'd played a tougher opponent to see where his game is at but anyway he's playing another match so he'll get more practice prior to the AO.

No one gloats on the ATP threads about victories over nobodies as they're meaningless. I just find it annoying on the WTA forum to be honest. Good luck to her in her next match but no one will see how her game stands up till she plays someone halfway decent is all I'm saying. Yeah, of course as I said already, fans are entitled to be happy she won her first match back but talk of the queen is back and domination and crushing frankly weak low ranked opponents is downright annoying to read. Actually a lot more than people getting so sensitive over nothing.

Disparaging remarks against a player are fair, and are not necessarily aimed at the fan-base. Players are fair game, and it IS over-sensitive to say that every negative comment against them is a swipe at their fans. On a forum like this, you can't have a glass jaw, or it's going to get broken. If you are a fan of a top player, you should never consider you can be made to feel stupid, in rough-and-tumble conversation, only that you're willing to back your own, and roll with the punches. I would suggest that valuable debate is more useful than whining about your mistreatment. Tell folks why they're wrong about Maria, with examples.
