Try reading Sherona. Caroline has withdrawn so Maria won't be playing her. As for the bye, in this tournament format only the top 2 seeds receive a bye. The remaining seeds must play a match for their first round.

I think our little dreamer - Sherona - is referring to the low ranked Caroline Garcia of France. So the statement was obviously provided for a laugh.

Does Caroline's withdrawal count as a zero-pointer for this year or no? I still don't understand this aspect of the ranking system.

There is no fine or 0 points as another player could take her place - as of page 40 in the WTA rulebook:

c. On-Site Exception

i. Definition
A withdrawal will not count as a Main Draw or Qualifying Late
Withdrawal, and the player may be relieved of the obligation to
pay a Late Withdrawal fine provided she fulfills the conditions
enumerated in sub-Section ii below and the player:

(a) Is on site at the Tournament and is forced to withdraw due
to an injury or illness

@Hoergren I so much more respect this type of withdrawal than the type Maria is famous for where she withdrawals only in time to make sure another player loses that spot and the draw is possibly messed up for Serena/Azarenka to be on the same side.

Yeah well I think it's difficult for all others to know why a player withdraws. I only hope they do it for their health situation. I think many players feel sorry for their fans when they have to withdraw. I hope Caroline is ok for the Sydney tournament and hope for all players that they are injury free before AO.:D

Obviously delusional if she thinks Garcia is tough as nails. She made a lot of noise a few years ago at RG, but has done nothing since then.

Sorry that Woz had to withdraw. I hope it is a minor injury which will not affect her play in Sydney or Melbourne. We will have to wait another week to see what improvements Hogstedt has implemented.

Thanks, was the situation with Azarenka in Dubai different last year? She was on site and was replaced with Suarez Navarro in the draw. But she was given a zero-pointer. What was the difference?

It's complicated and I'm not such an expert that I can see how and why players are fined in one or the other way, but I try to find it in the rulebook (496 pages!) . It can be a thing as not handing in the paperwork in time! Place in the rankings. How big a tournament. You can always write to the WTA with questions and they normally write back:) If anybody else knows more please write in this thread.

Since I wrote this I've seen in another forum that if she is playing two similar tournaments in 2014 she'll not get a 0 pointer - if not she will.

Umm, it was a first round match, not a final.

Wow, the number 4 player "dominated" the number 69. Like that's a big deal and not expected. Date-Krumm could've won by the same score and maybe that would actually have been impressive.

Pova will dominate over world number 190 next. I will be impressed if she dominates the world number one.

After yet another shoulder injury and a 4 month absence from tennis and this being Masha's first match after 4 months of rehab - it shouldn't be a surprise that Maria Sharapova fans are over the moon with her victory - I'm sure you haven't seen the match or you wouldn't have suggested that Date-Krumm could have won with the same score :)

Anyways - if it makes you feel good - warm and fuzzy inside to write condescending remarks about Masha and/or her fans instead of sharing their joy - Go ahead - I really wish you that joy :) and may your 2014 be filled with love and light!!

It's not about condescending her, but just take it in real terms, it was a first round match against a nobody. It's good she's able to play finally after 4 months but wait to see how she does against a good/top player before writing first title of the year for her, that's all and I personally don't think there's much point in writing that she was dominating against a nobody as that's pretty much expected. Have a good one :)

In real terms - if memory serves me right - even the best can stumble in the first round against someone ranked - lemme see - 111th in the world for example or loses to someone ranked #56 - Winning 63, 60 after a shoulder injury and a come back after 4 months rehab is a dominating victory - no matter how low the opponent is ranked - For the same money Masha could have lost or maybe had to struggle through a 3 setter to win the match after her 4 months absence (Sharapova survives Garcia scare)

It's always easy to be condescending if the player is not your favorite - it's more difficult but also more honorable to be appreciative towards such a player - or rather hold your tongue instead of commenting in the way you did

Re the last paragraph, people commenting on how she crushed or dominated a nobody is no different than someone sarcastically going wow, she crushed/dominated a nobody. Both are annoying for either party
